RonManager Posted 18 November, 2009 Share Posted 18 November, 2009 Keep the powder dry until January and then we will know what is required for the rest of the season. I would like to think that AP is already in that position and is actively enquiring after them - whomsoever they may be. The loan window closes on or around the 25th November, so, in theory, a player that he wants to buy, if available, he should be able to get as a loanee and then cough up for in January ie. he will not have to wait until the window to strengthen the team. patred44 Posted 18 November, 2009 Share Posted 18 November, 2009 What I find strange about the report is that Pards and Thatcher didn't exactly hit it off at Charlton. allegedly one of their 'conversations' went like this.. Following Charlton's unfortunate 2-1 defeat by Everton, Ben Thatcher squared up to gaffer Alan Pardew after he was substituted. "What the f*ck are you playing at, Pards?" said Thatcher with hatred in his eyes. "You're a prissy c*nt and you look like a gay."

Pity he hadn't said that in France where our local Club President has been banned for 2 months for calling an opposing player of effeminate poof. http://www.moneycontrol.com/news/world-news/montpellier-president-gets-ban-for-outburst_425277.html
PokingFun Posted 18 November, 2009 Share Posted 18 November, 2009 I can't believe you lot getting so irate over this guy and his supposed 'troublemaker' image. Since 2001-2002 season he has played 160 odd games, had 35 yellow cards and 2 red cards. Hardly the worst discplinary record ever given that cards are dished out like confetti these days. I mean, Franny had a shedload more sending offs in his career and the odd 'dubious' challenge yet he has never been called a thug on here to my knowledge. Is Thatcher really any different other than the fact we know Franny is a decent guy? Poking_Fun

Thatcher gets called a thug for the equally simple reason that he is one. Yes, Franny got booked plenty of times, and sent off a few as well (though I'm not sure how many), but there was nothing malicious in his play. I remember seeing a deliberate elbow by Thatcher on a Spurs (I think) player when he was playing for Wimbledon. The ref didn't see it, so he got away with it, but I remember the expression on his face in the replay - pure venom, and no question at all that it was a deliberate assault on his opponent. Anybody who deliberately sets out to injure an opponent is beyond the pale as far as I'm concerned.
Wade Garrett Posted 18 November, 2009 Share Posted 18 November, 2009 Harding has been superb and Mills will be a very good player. Why would we need Thatcher? It's funny how we can watch the same games and have vastly different views on certain players. I think Harding is very ordinary, and Mills hasn't looked the part whenever I've seen him play. Thatcher is a lot better than the pair of them.
sarum saint Posted 18 November, 2009 Share Posted 18 November, 2009 yes I know we wanted to get more experiance in but isn't Thatcher over 80 now ....even Stanley Mattews retired at 50 ! Plus agree ideologically don't think I could stomach this - worse than signing Marlon King !
SamKimish Posted 18 November, 2009 Share Posted 18 November, 2009 From the Facebook group "All Hail Ben Thatcher" ... Following Charlton's unfortunate 2-1 defeat by Everton, Ben Thatcher squared up to gaffer Alan Pardew after he was substituted. "What the **** are you playing at, Pards?" said Sir Thatcher with hatred in his eyes. "You're a prissy **** and you look like a gay." Pardew, sensing a forearm smash to the chops, eventually apologised and offered Ben his last Rolo. ******************************* Poor old Ben, substituted again. Thatcher believes Pards didn't give him enough time to wipe out heap o' **** striker Jonathan Stead. "I could have had him, boss! An elbow to the chops followed by a 45 yard thunderbolt would have won us the game!" We believe you, Ben
Block 5 Posted 18 November, 2009 Share Posted 18 November, 2009 Tory cow, I hate her and didn't even know she played football. If she signs I may boycott. Pardew wants his head testing. This sounds like the sort of signing Rupert Lowe would have made. Thatcher isn't looking too good these days.
Charlie2008 Posted 18 November, 2009 Share Posted 18 November, 2009 He's 33 now, and as a left back I would have Harding any day of the week. Can Thatcher also play CB though, I thought he could? If thats so, then he could come in to the squad to cover for CB after Trotman leaves. 34 in 12 days time! Surely only on a short term loan spell at that age. scotty Posted 18 November, 2009 Share Posted 18 November, 2009 Would love him here. But I honestly can't see us signing him as we don't need him. Would be hilarious if we did though. This board would go into meltdown over the outrage. exactly what I was thinking!! it might almost be worth signing the scratter up just to see the reaction on here, sweepstake on number of posts anyone? my moneys on 1000+

Arizona Posted 18 November, 2009 Share Posted 18 November, 2009 Hah, Hah, good one. £ for £ the worst player I have ever seen at Saints. £750k for a CB who couldn't head the ball and had the physical presence of an 80 year old Grannie. Of all the dross that Gormless George pi ssed away £8m on he stands out as the worst buy. And before anyone says he was a half decent midfield player, that's a bit like buying a car and saying that although it doesn't run it can be used as an adequete bottle opener... If Burley had a purchased a decent CB we really might have got promoted that year. The fact that some god-awful Portugese bloke has the indignity to wear the name of the greatest player ever to lace them up on his shirt still grates with me. I'm sure he will do well at Falkirk [reserves]. You're hatred of "Pedro Monteiro" really has to be seen to be believed. He was a fecking good central midfield, yet apparently that counts for nothing. FWIW I'd have been delighted if we'd brought him back AS A MIDFIELDER. He would fit into our mifield very well and is infinitely better than Wotton. Also, I belive he went to Haggisland on a free after being released, not on loan.
SaintRobbie Posted 19 November, 2009 Share Posted 19 November, 2009 See no point at all signing him. Over the hill and Harding is ok at left back. Plus Keane makes the point Thatcher is not in his starting line up because he can't adhere to basic principles such as getting to training on time. So he's a quality player who lacks discipline OFF the pitch? Sign him up and have Pards impose discipline. Sounds a good aquisition to me.
JustMike Posted 19 November, 2009 Share Posted 19 November, 2009 He is well over the hill and not a team player according to some of his previous employers , Dont need him , Left full back is well covered. Keep the powder dry until January and then we will know what is required for the rest of the season. Left back is not well covered. An injury to Harding would leave us very exposed. Mr X Posted 19 November, 2009 Share Posted 19 November, 2009 Can you tell your distant cousin that he is a filthy b*stard and, although he is a Saints fan and hammered someone that used to play for the skates, that he is not welcome in our team. SNSUN Posted 19 November, 2009 Share Posted 19 November, 2009 Don't need him, and I hope Pardew is smart enough to realise this. Harding has been my MOTM for the last couple of games, he works his butt off and is possibly the best left back we could have at this level. Add to that Mills as cover and I don't see why we're trying to strengthen a position that doesn't need strengthening. With Antonio, Trotman and Mellis no more than just loans, surely one of their positions will need strengthing in January/Summer.

Kelly Smunt Posted 20 November, 2009 Share Posted 20 November, 2009 I just can't believe how much people rate Harding on here, I think he flatters to deceive, his distribution has been very poor of late and like James he doesn't overlap. I also think that he is defensively naive and this has cost us points, Bristol Rovers winning goal and Brighton's opener come to mind.
