St Landrew Posted 16 November, 2009 Share Posted 16 November, 2009 (edited) http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/internationals/8361602.stm And to think I read just a couple of days ago that George Burley's job was perfectly safe. Even then I thought it was the kiss of death. Apologies if posted earlier Noticed it now on the main forum. At least mine has a link. George Burley/Scotland... Hmm... Nope, can't think of a Saints related link there. Edited 16 November, 2009 by St Landrew
ecuk268 Posted 16 November, 2009 Share Posted 16 November, 2009 His contract was until 2012, so he'll presumably get a good payoff. Whoever they get, they haven't got the players to seriously compete in world footy. 25 years ago, every top English team had a Scottish international - Souness, Dalgliesh, McQueen, McAllister etc. Where are the players of that calibre now? Good point, this was the Scotland team that lost 1-0 to England at Hampden Park in 1982: Alan Rough, George Burley, Danny McGrain, Alan Hansen, Allan Evans, David Narey, Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness, Joe Jordan, Asa Hartford, Alan Brazil, Now that is a pretty damned good side ! For the record the England team was none too shabby either: Peter Shilton [Nottingham Forest] Trevor Brooking [West Ham United] Terry Butcher [ipswich Town] Stephen Coppell [Manchester United] Kevin Keegan [southampton] Paul Mariner [ipswich Town] Mick Mills [ipswich Town] Bryan Robson [Manchester United] Kenneth Sansom [Arsenal] Philip Thompson [Liverpool] Raymond Wilkins [Manchester United]
saint_bert Posted 16 November, 2009 Share Posted 16 November, 2009 In fairness, is their squad that far off talent wise of say ROI? I know it sounds daft, but players like, Gordon,Fletcher,Mcfadden and Maloney are not to shabby are they? I know the whole Ferguson/Boyd debacle must of had a big knock on problem. Maybe im just trying to grasps at straws?
Arizona Posted 17 November, 2009 Share Posted 17 November, 2009 They don't have the players to be world beaters, but they really have underperformed. Couldn't have asked for an easier qualifying group either, but they couldn't even finish ahead of the worst Norway side I've seen in years. They got outplayed by Macedonia when they came to Hampden. bungle Posted 17 November, 2009 Share Posted 17 November, 2009 At the end of the day, I'm not sure what any other manager could have done. Scotland really have a poor squad at the minute, and they have also lost a number of players due to injury during the qualifying campaign. And to have Kenny Miller up front who is guaranteed to miss the best chances doesn't help either. And he did that under Smith and McLeish as well as Burley.
