saintrich Posted 16 November, 2009 Share Posted 16 November, 2009 I don't mind the concept of students, studying, university etc. I just don't like most people who are students. You can always spot a student... stupid hair, tight clothes - probably from topman, plimsoles, 'man bags', what c*nts. Most also think that because they are students they can go around being annoying. Plenty of people I know from school (3/4 years ago) were always boring and now they're at uni it's like they have to make up for their boring life by not being able to handle their drink, going around in big groups with 'carnage' t-shirts or something similar and picking up traffic cones etc and being general tw*ts. That boy who ****ed on the poppy memorial, I bet he was a student. *I'm sure some/most students are ok though.

Red&White Posted 17 November, 2009 Share Posted 17 November, 2009 Todays main Echo story is that of 'out of control students'. This years intake of students have been branded the worst ever when it comes to alcohol fuelled violence and antisocial behaviour. Now police and council chiefs have told pubs and bars to put the price UP on alcohol, knowing that the skint students won't be able to afford as much. Thing is, I see it as unfair to Southampton residents and feel that the students not from our fair City should just f**k off now. Absolutely they can f**k right off
Wade Garrett Posted 17 November, 2009 Share Posted 17 November, 2009 Ah yes, the typical ignorant moron comment. Obviously all students are only doung media studies courses, I look forward to chatting to my local GP in a few years about the excellent camera work on the latest BBC costume drama. Idiot. Well look in yesterday's Echo, when the students had their say. They were studying, and I kid you not: English and screenwriting Media International Tourism Screenwriting Fashion and culture Sports Development Record production Performance Fashion styling Music production English and film. Now call me an ignorant moron, you f*ckwit.

RonManager Posted 17 November, 2009 Share Posted 17 November, 2009 Apparently you can do a degree on Golf Course Management...! lol also, a degree on David Beckham Studies is this true? I failed my Bobby Charlton degree because I couldn't pass the comb-over section of the course. Later on I took a Doctorate in MLT but again I failed coz I missed two penalties. Been practising my diving with a view to doing an Open University Didier Drogba City & Guilds.
SuperMikey Posted 17 November, 2009 Share Posted 17 November, 2009 Well look in yesterday's Echo, when the students had their say. They were studying, and I kid you not: English and screenwriting Media International Tourism Screenwriting Fashion and culture Sports Development Record production Performance Fashion styling Music production English and film. Now call me an ignorant moron, you f*ckwit. You are an ignorant moron to believe that's the calibre of degree that all students study. I presume most of those students are currently studying at Southampton Solent University (ranked 111th out of 114 institutions by the Times University Guide 2010) as opposed to the University of Southampton (ranked 15th out of 114). Lazy journalism to pick on obvious dimwits in order to prove a point, the vast majority of the student population are studying at the proper university, which actually requires relatively high grades to get in to. Fact of the matter is that students make up 10% of the Southampton population, therefore they also make up (at least) 10% of the Southampton economy. Whilst the behaviour of some students isn't necessarily perfect, don't tar all students with the 'lout' brush, because they simply aren't all out until 5am drinking in pubs and clubs and being sick on old ladies. I'd be more worried about the astoundingly high mugging rate in the city before i'd be worrying about a few students having a good time. And as for the students 'having their say', I doubt they'd be given half as much freedom of expression by the journo's as a 'worried resident' such as yourself. Grow a f*cking pair and get some common sense ffs.

I have got a pair, thank you very much. You make a decent point (apart from the moron bit, that sounds a bit supercilious to me). Southampton has a top university whose graduates will benefit the country for years to come. Solent has a university that will benefit McDonalds for years to come. benjii Posted 18 November, 2009 Share Posted 18 November, 2009 The problem, if there is one beneath commercial journalism and thinly veiled jealously, is the continuous dumbing down and failure of the school education system coupled with a bizare governmental notion that it is a good thing for people of distinctly average intellect to attend educational institutions that should aspire to intellectual elitism. Being a student myself most students are harmless and don't get into fights and stuff (Unlike the chavvy bunch who go out on Friday and Saturdays), yes students like to go out and drink but it's the fact when you're 18/19! just going into Uni thats what THEY do, people have to remember when they were that age doing EXACTLY the same thing. I frankly think the Echo are scraping at the bottom of the barrell to sell a story. The fact is both Uni's contribute a huge amount to the economy in the city we should be proud we have two Universities even if Solent isn't very good. Most people who complain about students haven't ever been one and are looking for a scapegoat, we're actually 99% of us just friendly young people trying to earn some qualifications whilst enjoying ourselves at the same time. saint1977 Posted 19 November, 2009 Share Posted 19 November, 2009 There was a piece on Radio 4 a few weeks ago along the lines of 'shake any five hands at random in Southampton city centre and one of them will be a student'. Apparently out of our population of 200 000 there are 20 000 students - it would seem that our local economy relies a lot on them and it would be better if they did not 'f*** off'... It'll be more than that - Solent has really grown it's Undegrad numbers in the last few years so that must be c15-17k and Soton Uni is huge - probably the best part of 20k Undergs. That's without Post Grads as well. That number will plateau with the Government restrictions on fully funded student places and the number of 18 year olds will fall in the next few years but I would have to agree with those that say the Universities make a key contribution to the local economy. After all, what else does Soton do now?
