Tell the students to f*** off

Todays main Echo story is that of 'out of control students'.

This years intake of students have been branded the worst ever when it comes to alcohol fuelled violence and antisocial behaviour.

Now police and council chiefs have told pubs and bars to put the price UP on alcohol, knowing that the skint students won't be able to afford as much.

Thing is, I see it as unfair to Southampton residents and feel that the students not from our fair City should just f**k off now.

"Fair city"?

+1

when in rome...

seriously though, when-ever anyone on this forum slates students, all they're saying is 'I've wasted my life and rather than do anything about it I'll just blame all my woes on an easy social target'. The fact that a fair percentage of students these days are just annoying towney ***ts doesn't effect anything. (saying that, give me the lefty students of yore any day).

This is not unique to Southampton,we have had similar outrage in Gloucestershire this year about drunkeness and 'drinking rituals'.This story even made national news in the press and tv:

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/education/student/article4866791.ece

Its not a problem with further education or the instititutions, but the social changes and what is deemed acceptable binge culture.

There was a piece on Radio 4 a few weeks ago along the lines of 'shake any five hands at random in Southampton city centre and one of them will be a student'.

Apparently out of our population of 200 000 there are 20 000 students - it would seem that our local economy relies a lot on them and it would be better if they did not 'f*** off'...

Instead of hating on students why not cut to the chase and just admit you can't stand young people having fun?

I wouldn't say that was the case at all.

I'm of a certain age and was a student in the 70s. We had plenty to drink, had a lot of laughs BUT, we didn't see the need to go round in marauding groups intimidating other people or screaming at the tops of our heads all night. Neither did we bother to dress up in bed sheets and wander round the town like a bunch of escapees from Park Pruett.

Have fun by all means, but try to keep the disruption of other peoples' pleasure to a minimum, please.

For the record I don't hate students and don't mind young people having fun, but there is a limit.

Bedford Place/London Road most mornings is strewn with rubbish, takeaways, vomit, blood etc

I know my limits when it comes to drinking, but unfortunately alot of people don't.

One of the stories related to this investigation is of a woman who had just had open heart surgery being intimitated by gangs of drunken louts.

The Echo article is 5 pages long with different views from the public, police and even the street cleaners..

Don't think I ever set foot in a pub as a student, I was so snowed under with the work.

In truth, students have always been a bit alcohol fuelled. It's almost a rite of passage for them before they enter the world of sobriety. Never known loads of them to be violent though.

Here's a small article.

Also has a CCTV clip of some of their behaviour. I believe the house being harrassed is that of the woman who recently had open heart surgery. At least they benefit the City though....

But unfortunately Sir, it appears you reach those limits quicker than you think you do....

Don't worry, it's only anti-social behaviour now, not even rated as a Police problem anymore.

Give it another few years and the problem will be solved, once the locals start arming themsleves with machetes and reclaiming their streets

But on a serious note, the "Saturday Night in Town" is the one thing that I notice that has really changed in the years I have been away. It has taken years to get to this mess and no matter what happens now it will take years to get out of it.

Hanging's too good for them, bring back the Birch, raise the legal age to 30, Sue the landlord for serving them too much alcohol - ah ha now THAT one works in the US.....

That won't make any difference, most students nowadays have as much disposable as normal people, they just get mummy or daddy to send them a cheque if they run out.

When I was a student I spent half my life off my tits, it's OK when you're on campus but when you are stuck in houses amongst people who actually have jobs it does cause a problem and the locals have every right to tell them to **** off. Many of these kids wouldn't dream of acting the same way in their own cities.

Ha, Ii was scrolling to the bottom of the topic to post the same - you beat me to it :)

Llike someone says in the Echo comments, if the students are getting cheaper drinks due to discount cards etc (which they do in many places) then instead of generally raising the prices of drinks for everyone, just take away their discount cards.

That article makes me laugh, considering the trouble starts on a friday or a saturday night when the southampton residents are out.

Students hardly cause trouble apart from noise.

I go out quite a lot in town on weekdays and have hardly seen much trouble in town.

I suppose it's easier to blame the student population for society's problems than anyone else. Seriously, I live in Colchester, home to the University of Essex, and there are hardly any student related problems. The majority of the time it's the bloody squaddies causing the aggro, having a fight every 5 mins, or just the local 'Essex boy' population all giving it their best 'Danny Dyer's'

Dude, you have my deepest and most heart-felt sympathy, that truly sounds like hell on earth :(

I've not gone drinking in Soton for years and years, because lets face it, there's not much to do apart from get falling-down-drunk.

Winchester has a reputation for being very nice and quiet, but the main strip (Stella Street) is a no go on a Friday/Saturday as the pubs/bars are all meat markets full of 14 year old girls and towney twunts. we've got lots of students here, and lots of them walk past my house on their way home, but whilst some are arrogant d1cks who can't hold their booze, they're not the trouble makers. We used to have squaddies here too about twenty years ago and they were just animals, but people were in general much more forgiving toward them, 'ah, bless 'um, they're just letting off steam' as 12 of them stamp a couple of students into the pavement.

Does anyone go drinking in Aldershot on a weekend? I'm sure that as they don't have a Uni, it must be a vision of peace and harmony, with everyone clearing up after themselves.

The whole thing just smacks of lazy journalism.

Thursday nights in Winch are a lot better as it is Student night, lots of crazy drunken antics going on then... And where is this Stella street??

Is there actually any proof that these people are all students though? The whole story, and those discussing it, seem to assume that everyone who is aged between 18 and 21 is a student. In reality the people I know who are my age and not students are a lot more likely to cause trouble than the students, plus the fact that they have recently started earning means they have a lot more money than the students to waste on booze.

As a student myself I can confirm that the majority of students know there limits. However its going past those limits and generally getting ****ed out of your face that is the best part. Waking up in a pool of your own vomit with a kebab in one hand and a random vagina on the other is awesome.

I'd also like to point out the the majority of trouble is caused on Friday/Saturday nights. Alot of students do not go out into town, especially in Southampton, on those nights because prices do not go down like they do during the week. Students will normally host and attend house parties at the weekend.

The majority of trouble caused at weekends will be caused by people with jobs during the week who live for the weekend and go out and cause trouble between themselves because they are angry about the fact that they wasted the youth away and live a **** poor boring life during the week.

Where is Stu to comment when you need him? This thread needs a balanced debate.

Obviously getting rid of the Uni's from Soton is a ridiculous piece of over exaggeration.

That said I went out around Bedford place on a Tuesday night a while back and was astonished at how busy it was. The 99p promotion were everywhere and this has to be looked at. A student or anyone can go out and get hammered on £20, try doing that on a Saturday night.

Leave them alone. They're working very hard at their polytechnic on their media studies courses. They will be the backbone of our country in years to come.

Think how many experts in Coronation Street there will be.

Ah yes, the typical ignorant moron comment. Obviously all students are only doung media studies courses, I look forward to chatting to my local GP in a few years about the excellent camera work on the latest BBC costume drama.

Idiot.
