Saints Vs Brighton - Post Match Discussion

Positives:

The fans were in fine fine voice and the Itchen started off a couple! Just back from the match (really cr*p traffic trying to get out tonight, no idea what was going on) and watching the game on Sky - yup, crowd sound excellent - well done all.

Negatives:

My seven year old proudly announced that her best bit of todays match was the song "Does your boyfriend know you're here?" Hmmmm

Spoke to a mate just now, apparently something "kicked off" near the station and all sorts of problems and road closures happened on his way home. Bad news on bad news

Trottman struggled but Jaidi had a shocker and his body language was unreal, he didn't look like he could give a toss. Why play 4-4-2 when the defence insist on missing out the midfield altogether. Schneiderlin had a horror as well. Lambert couldn't seem to get into the game but that seemed down to lack of service. In saying that I think we were the better team over the whole 90 minutes but giving the others a 2-0 start is shooting yourself in the foot of the highest degree.

Hopefully just a blip and not a time for suicide and inquests.

A lot of gash being written on here tonight. Not surprising. We were poor in the first half, but actually taken as a whole game I'm not too disappointed. Brighton were clearly up for it, and the new manager syndrome worked a treat for them, and of course with the new regime coming in Ap and his crew had not had a chance to take a look at them. Lambert was clearly not well, but his passion to play took him through. Trotman was poor admittedly, but everyone has a bad game at times. Can't honestly say anyone else played badly, Jaidi was suspect but not as poor as some are making out, and the criticisms of James on here are truly pathetic.

Antonio was class, staggered we took him off though he was a nightmare for their full-back (El-Ahd or whatever he was called).

We had a blip, it was a shame, we had lost only 1 game in 14, **** happens, I will not slit my wrists like some unrealistic posters.

The worst aspect is that it will now take 2 games to get out of the bottom 4. Oh and my run of 10 pointers in the Pred League comes to a shuddering end (I predicted 4-0 I know that was daft)

Too many decent players had shockers today.

Trotman, Jaidi, Morgan, Hammond were woeful.

We had an off day. We're not Chelsea, get over it and get off the manager's back. The players let us down today not Pardew.

I would look at playing Antonio and Waigo (second consecutive sub appearance when he's come on and looked really dangerous) down the flanks, and Lallana in the middle with Hammond holding. Having a pop at Lambert or Connolly today is a bit out of order. They were mostly fed on scraps, and Connolly isn't going to beat a 6 foot centre-back in the air.

to be fair...we looked tired at times in the week against charlton...just they looked even worse on the night..

Yes I thought Charlton looked good in the last twenty minutes not sure if it was their full team playing

However Charlton won 5 1 yesterday with one days less rest

We were due a beating.

Probably kick up the arse we need.

Saints = Hoof.

Only players to come out with any credit are Davies, James, Antonio & Thomas.

Agree with this. Except James, he needs to learn to put his foot in for tackles and run with the ball instead of doing the same cross over and over again to no effect. Sad because i think he's been looking a lot better recently.

Brighton were always going to give this 110% due to the new manager coming in, we looked tired all too often and didnt do enough with the possesiion we had. I lost count of how many time LJ crossed the ball to no-one and how many time Antonio tried to fool the LB with the same move. We were way to predictable. I heard Lambert was ill today and to be fair he played like it but then again it doesnt help when the ball i hoofed up to him everytime. Defence was too slow in 1st half, MS too lazy and mis-placed too many passes. We didnt test their keeper anywhere near enough, id be interested to see how many shot we had on target, bet it wasnt many.

That said, its one game and maybe the kick up the arse we all needed. Better next week please Saints

First game I've managed to watch this season and it was a strange one. I missed the first 25 mins after spending that time trying to find a pub in Kendal that was showing it. When I did find one, I came in to see that we were already 0-2 down, and couldn't quite work out why cos for the remainder of the first half we were definitely the better team.

Second half was strange. We had soooo much possession but despite all that we lacked a killer touch and apart from Lallana's header that went just wide we didn't look like creating anything against a very resolute Brighton defence.

I have to give Brighton credit really. They came with a game plan - throw 11 men behind the ball and hope to get lucky on the break - and it worked. Their second goal was pure luck really. Once KD made the save the rebound could have gone anywhere, but it just happened to land at the feet of their striker who couldn't miss. The first goal looked like he completely mis-hit it as well.

I'm not going to get down-hearted about it though. A blip, yes - a disaster? No. Every team has their off-days, and our winning streak was bound to come to an end sooner or later. The one big positive I take from it is that we never panicked - we always looked calm and composed and I'm confident that this one game isn't the sign of things to come.

Agree with that. A lot of games with a similar bunch of players. A nice 6 days til our next game might help.

maybe..but then charlton won 5-1 today after playing the same game..??

i was shocked when some were posting on wednesday that were were amazing against charlton...when, we were not really...

hopefully today is a case of one game too many in a run of fixtures..

tough one coming up...we simply cannot lose..and IMO (dont have a pop) we have the players, set up etc etc to go into EVERY HOME GAME expecting the team to NOT lose

OMG - a positive!! Having a pre-match beer outside the Waterfront in Shamrock Quay decided to put a few bets on Skybet. Skybet ain't that easy to use on a phone but persevered. Had good odds on 6-1 (200/1) but there was good reason for that I suppose.

Put a few bets on 3-0, 3-1, 3-2 for Saints to win. However, just checking my account now it appears that the small screen of the mobile made me actually put a bet on Brighton to win 3-1 at 66/1. Every cloud and all that :)

Would have prefered us to win though TBH.

I dont think the posters on here are realistic enough the team is OK but not brilliant as was the performance v Charlton

Basically the problem was that the spine of the team didn't really show up

Davis was pretty poor and should have saved their 2nd goal, as well as done something about the cross that almost went in off the post.

Trotman and Jaidi especially were godawful and caught on the counter-attack too easily

Schneiderlin and Hammond were just nowhere and totally lost the midfield battle

and Lambert really did nothing apart from score the penalty.

So despite good performances from Harding, James, Lallana, Antonio etc. we couldn't manage anything decent as the spine of the team just didn't show up

How is that good odds ffs? How many times do you see 6-1? Them fixed odds on correct scores are rubbish. Good odds my arse

Q1: Why are we still in 22nd place (after 16 games)

Q2: Why have we lost to Brighton (who have won just one in the last 10)

Q3: Why have we dropped so many points at home this season

Q4: What is plan 'B' now that we start games with Antonio and Conolly

A1: The ten point deduction

A2: New manager, plus they actually played well.....

A3: Confidence factor after last few seasons..was always going to take time.

Just back from the game and pretty disappointed to say the least.

Brighton were well up for this game and had much better control of the ball during the game. Their attacking play for their first two goals was excellent (as much as I hate to admit it).

Whereas we were playing "head tennis" from defence, straight over our midfield to their midfield. I lost count of how many times we didn't win the 50:50 ball in midfield, or we lost the second ball.

Our attacking play was very limited either give it to Antonio (who IMO was probably our best player today) who was closed down by 2 to 3 of their players (as was Papa when he came on) or to James who floats in a cross for their defense to clear. Even when Rickie did win a header it didn't reach another Saints player. We were attacking them with a blunt instrument, whereas they attacked us with speed and adventure - they could have scored more. Our midfield didn't seem to get involved - or would win a ball only to give it away again. Overall some of our forward passing was not good enough to create a chance.

Positives for us: we did battle hard to try and get back into the game but we couldn't break their defense down. Some good tackling by defenders preventing them from possible scoring more. We did dominate possession for long periods.

Comparing today with some of last season's performances I still remain upbeat - we are a better team today than last season.

But today we were beaten by a team who showed more passion, commitment and more invention moving forward.

If Poyet keeps this up then Brighton will move up the table quickly.

Um, about every 200 games?

Don't get me wrong, fair play to you or anyone that picks the correct score out the bag. The bookies though are not stupid and the odds they give for correct scores are ******* ****. I'd lay money on it being more than 200 league games since we've won 6-1 at home. It's a lottery predicting the score!!

Um, league cup on 02-10-2002 against Tranmere... However, that's around 300 games ago - must mean we're due another soon surely? (Better put it on again for the Norwich match now!)

I'm pretty sure AP will have learned some big lessons today.

The biggest cause for concern is surely our continuing ability to leak goals. The goals against column tells its own story. We aren't too bad defensively, but we are not good enough to do real promotion form. The problems stem from , (I/m afraid) LJ's defensive shortcomings, and a lack of cover from MF. Look at the MF 4 today. For all that the players concerned have done well in the last couple of months, as a unit the balance is too attack minded, and they are a little lightweight defensively. I bet if he could re run the game, AP would start 4-5-1.With AL out wide, we just have to have the extra defensive midfielder.

To be fair, the pass down the right for their first goal opened us right up, but you have to be solid enough to make sure that when you get done, it remains at one.

The other cause for concern today is that too often we were predictable in attack. Antonio is very useful, but he is a one trick pony at present- and WHERE was the overlap threat from Harding and Lloyd?Lost count of LJ's crosses from deep, which they didn't really have too much trouble with.

A really disappointing day, but I think it does show us where we are. In reality the side we have is probably a good playoff contender quality wise- by next season we need to be better than that.

isnt it amazing how fickle football fans are. few weeks ago everyone on here wanted to see us play 442 and now, because of one bad result, everyone seems to think 451 is the way to go. talk about over-reaction. the simple fact was that we had an awful 15 minute period in the first half that cost us the game. i couldnt fault our commitment but the centre halves both had poor games today by their standards. i still thought we looked pretty decent going forward and had enough chances to rescue something from the game. its time we forgot about the play-offs this season, 15 points will be almost impossible to make up because the teams near the top usually win each week so we would have to win nearly every game to get up there. lets not be too down after one bad result

Davis - good saves from him, expect he wudda liked a better performance last game as captain

Harding - out of position for 1st goal earned a couple of free kicks but not good enough

Jaidi - couldnt win a header against strikers half his size, looked like he didnt want to be there

Trotman - didnt do anything

Thomas - actually won a few couple of headers but him running forward and watching him pass his way out of defence was very worrying

James - best player on the day looked comfortable on the ball hit some good crosses just no one upfront was attacking them

Schneiderlin - forgot he was even playing today

Hammond - missed from 12 yards and that was really the end of the game for us

Lallana - used the ball well...sometimes, just a shade of the player he truly is. games like that are ones he needs to step up and deliver

Antonio - really troubled their left back just no end product, his thrown ins troubled their defence but they should have been aimed at lambert instead of connolly

Papa Waigo - wasnt on for long enough, should have scored though he just doesn't have composure infront of goal

Lambert - well taken penalty but apart from that didnt really impact the game, probably because we couldn't string more than a couple of passes together

Connolly - worked hard and chased, didnt have a chance to score tho

Mills - wasnt on long enough to make an impact

it was a sloppy 1st 25 mins that lost us the game, fair play to brighton they were the quickest out the gates today and deserved it, however our bad performance did help them!

Thought Brighton looked the best side we played this season which is quite alarming considering their position.

Positives: Lambert & Papa

Negatives: James (especially), Harding, Trotman, Jaidi, Hammond.

totally disagree with you, james was the only positive today hit some good crosses and looked comfortable on the ball, papa waigo should have scored he doesn't have any composure in front of goal. lambert had a mediocre game today

I have only quickly read the thoughts on this thread.

My thoughts are as follows.

Seemed weak in midfield, defence failed to deal with anything that Brighton threw at us. Jaidi had a bit of a shocker as did harding.

Young lloyd looks good going forward, some great crosses that NOBODY seemed to get on the end of properly.

Far too many long balls up to Lambert, we just seemed to have no other ideas.

Lallana had a bit of an off day.

It was pretty terrible, although as others have said, second game that most of the team played in five days, nobody looked particularly good.

I am not going to dwell on it, everyone has off days every now and again. We did control the games for long periods, we know we can score and know we can defend well.

IMO 'tis a one off, in pardew we trust

James was skinned on more than one occasion and was at fault for the third goal.

I don't think he can be totally blamed for the 3rd goal - the ball came back from their man on their left wing across the penalty area to the "D" where their midfielder ran forward to belt it in. There were 3 or 4 Saints players caught ball watching. Somebody should have been there - dare I say we missed Wotton today, in front of the back 4...............

This makes me laugh when people talk about James, "he puts some good crosses in". When you are sitting 30 yards from goal ploughing 15 crosses a game into the box you are BOUND to find one of your team-mates eventually.

Not sure that I was at the same game as this poster. Just because he got the ball more than anyone else does not warrant this blinkered praise.

He is painfully slow and was beaten numerous times in the part of the pitch that a full back should be judged by. Brighton played several players on their left, during the match and they all beat him comfortably. The 3rd goal being a classic case where he was never close enough to foul, let alone tackle.

His free kicks and corners were back to the standard of early season and as pointed out by others on here, his crosses in play were from too deep and were easily defended.

But hey! Lets make him MOM.

Three league games in a row we go a goal(s) down. Worrying. Leyton Orient we got lucky, today we were punished for not having much variation in our attacking build up. Brighton are sh*t but still found it simple.

Norwich now becomes a must win game, otherwise we will be deep in relegation doo doo again, the players will become unconfident, the Pardew bashers will be out in force and the losing mentality will return (considering what the club has been through, this actually matters a lot for some of our players).

My Ratings: Davis 7, Harding 5, Trotman 4, Jaidi 5, James 6, Antonio 9, Lallana 7, Schniederlin 5, Hammond 6, Lambert 5, Connolly 7.

Brighton played better than they usually will because of the new manager syndrome. But still, if we cannot beat Brighton at home, we are in big trouble. LEEDS WILL NOT DO THIS. NORWICH WILL NOT DO THIS. CHARLTON, MILLWALL, HUDDERSFIELD DO NOT DO THIS.

Easily defended as no-one was attacking the ball. What more can he do. Every cross was put in the right area for someone to attack it but nobody did. People also forget he isn't a natural right back, so give him a break.

Because he's not a right back. When he got skinned it had nothing to do with him being too far forward,it had everything to do with him being sloooow.

hes quicker than the rest of our defence with the exception of possibly harding, but hey we have murty to come back his blistering pace will mean no wingers can outpace us on the right!

Very disappointing but, on the other hand, we are not going to win every game for ever and ever. We dominated possession but did sod all with it. Their goals were classic counter strikes assisted by the fact that our midfield was awol for all three goals. (Who the hell should have been tracking the guy who scored that last goal?) It might be a gentle reminder to some that the play-offs really are not a realistic option. I worked out that we would have to win five more games than the team in position 6 to realistically have a chance of the play-offs. That effectively means winning almost all the remaining games. That is not going to happen - sorry!

Murty reads the game better than James. He's not a right back and I would play him in midfield personally.

Agreed. Personally I would have James in the centre with Hammond and give Hammond he license to roam with James sitting there. That would mean dropping Morgan. Will give us a kind of Plan 'B'.
