Kelvin's last game as captain...

do we know why its his last game? commentator didnt mention it again (if he did I missed it)

Because Pardew prefers an outfield captain.

Have to say despite today's fiasco I agree.

Maybe today that WAS the issue.

KD didn't want to captain the side knowing he was giving it up and the new guy didn't feel he could take the responsibility on yet?

Hammond it is then!

Was mentioned in the programme today by Pard's, his reasoning being that he needs someone ''on the pitch'' who can go and talk to the ref if needs be......he did say he'll stay as ''club captain'' and he's the best club captain he's worked with.

This was brought up a few weeks ago. Apparently AP has already stated that KD will be a club captain all the while he is in charge, but that he would like an outfield skipper who can get more involved and talk to the ref etc. Comon sense really. Think people are reading too much into what was just a bad day at the office all round.

Would be glad to see Hammond as captain, i like him.

Davis has been a good captain but i think it's always best to have an outfield player as captain. It might stop him from coming out so far.

You missed it. It was spoken about again, but didn't mention who, just that AP wants an outfield player, and to be fair that makes total sense these days. You need someone in the thick of it to talk with the Ref. KD is apparently OK about it, and will remain as Club Captain, just not on the pitch.I guess Hammond will take it on, with his previous experience in the role.

Kelvin is still remaining as 'club captain' and so his responsibilties don't change dramatically.

Hammond would be the leading candidate to become 'team captain' and it's a move that makes sense.

It is tough for a keeper to command and direct orders from the back, and Hammond is always involved in the middle of the park.

So long as Kelvin is OK with the decision, then I'm happy too. In Pards we trust!

Hammond must be captain as he has experience in the role at Colchester, plays in a central role and apart from Jaidi (assuming you don't saddle your front players with the responsibility) there is no other option. Jaidi today looked like a player who needed a telling as oppose to one to lead from front.

Is KD leaving ?

My opinion is YES

He stayed loyal hoping for a good start to the season

It has NOT happened as he would have hoped, ie, we are STILL in the Relegation Zone, with no realistic chance of making the Top Six

Therefore, he has to think of his future with a Club in a higher Division

Bart seems to have got some of his confidence back, so I think they will move forward with him:)

Yeah, heard that too - bound to be Hammond. Midfielders always make the best captains in my humble opinion (ref. Ball, Case, Williams).

How about a poll, just for a bit of fun...?

Can't see anyone else but hammond tbh.

was probably the purpose of the change around against Charlton in the JPT - and by all accounts he had a good game.

No, don't think Saga or Bart are in the frame :)

Hammond would be the natural choice I presume.

This was really a foregone conclusion - wasn't it ? At the start of the season, KD was "the senior pro " and one of the oldest on the staff, too. and put the club first when offered Prem football at West Ham.:D

He is (apparantly) a good leader-type and with so many young / new players it was the right move at that time.

(BUT goalkeeping captains are rarely the "ideal choice" for obvious reasons. OK Shilton did for England during his time with us, but at international level players have more experience and don't need the same encouragement.)

The capt.(with armband) is meant to be the one to " speak with the ref." - not so easy with a disputed free-kick on the edge of the box - the goalie needs time to line up the wall -and not argue the toss with the ref. 20 yards away.

As prev. discussed on an earlier " 5 captains thread " we have several other players with captain .experience; Hammond, Wotton, Thomas and Murty have all had the task with former clubs.

Despite recent "off-form" games, Hammond would be most peoples choice I'm sure; IMHO Thomas and Wotton are a bit too " agressive " at times. Hammond seems to be a bit more level-headed, sadly Murty (also a good leader type has been out for a long time, but could equally well do DTJFU.)

I really don't think this requires Sun Sport headline treatment, it's a natural thing to have a midfielder/ defender for the job and I'd go for Hammond, or a fully-fit Murty.

END OF RANT !
