Pilchards Posted 15 November, 2009 Posted 15 November, 2009 If you could bring one player back from the past to help us today who would it be? I know many of you would choose Le Tiss but IMHO we have some luxury players like Morgan and Lallana already. I would take Anti Niemi in his prime as I have never seen anything like it for Saints.
benjii Posted 15 November, 2009 Posted 15 November, 2009 Niemi would be wasted though... we only have about two or three shots on target against us in most matches. A strikeforce of Lambert and Shearer... Lambert and Keegan... Lambert and Beattie... etc would be hilarious in this division. I wouldn't want MLT as he finished on a perfect note v Arsenal. I would plump for Marian, Belmadi, Ekelund, someone like that. Skilful players that would destroy League One defenders and make them look silly. By the way, you know this thread is an open invitation for all the old gits to come on and tell is how good little Stan Wilberforce or Jimmy "jughead" Trouserpress etc... was, don't you?
fish fingers Posted 15 November, 2009 Posted 15 November, 2009 Kleber Chala, he could really hold the ball up well in the middle.
John B Posted 15 November, 2009 Posted 15 November, 2009 Terry Paine would give Lambert and Connolly Loads of Chances

It's funny you mention Niemi would be wasted, This current team will score every game which means If you don't concede then you can only win :-) Who the smeg is juggerhead haha let's have them oldies back m8 as I love the stories from the past.
WestSaint Posted 15 November, 2009 Posted 15 November, 2009 Interesting question and thanks for the old git tag benjii Terry Paine on the wing , Peter Osgood up front
swannymere Posted 15 November, 2009 Posted 15 November, 2009 Ronnie Ekelund, we never saw him at his best. Failing that Jo Tessem

Interesting question and thanks for the old git tag benjii Terry Paine on the wing , Peter Osgood up front Hehe - was just kidding. I like hearing about players I never got to see too. It reminds me how lucky I was to start supporting us when I did (89-90 season). I got to see MLT, Tim Flowers, Doddsy, Shearer (briefly), Niemi, Marian etc.... Imagine if you were a kid in Soton who had started getting really interested in football about three years ago Some of us have been very lucky in our Saints supporting "careers"!
John B Posted 15 November, 2009 Posted 15 November, 2009 Interesting question and thanks for the old git tag benjii Terry Paine on the wing , Peter Osgood up front Osgood before he broke his leg He was nowhere as good after
Nutwood2 Posted 15 November, 2009 Posted 15 November, 2009 Steve Williams in his prime. I'll second that. He'd win this league by himself. What a player!
revolution saint Posted 15 November, 2009 Posted 15 November, 2009 Well seeing as we already have a good squad for this division then I'd say the most obvious deficiencies we currently have is natural wide players. Paine, MLT, Armstrong could all do a job for us. Case and Hammond would be a fantastic midfield though.
stmaxx Posted 15 November, 2009 Posted 15 November, 2009 danny wallace his speed would tear defenders to bits in this league
Victor Posted 15 November, 2009 Posted 15 November, 2009 Ronnie Ekelund, we never saw him at his best. Failing that Jo Tessem This post belongs with the Alia Dia suggestion. I go for Steve Williams too - got that bit of bite that would add something we could do with that just puts him ahead of David Armstrong. DA was almost a team on his own but probably did it a bit too quietly to be fully appreciated by the current side.
Causer Posted 15 November, 2009 Posted 15 November, 2009 Theo - fantastic to watch and would destroy the defences in this league.
Larrylove Posted 15 November, 2009 Posted 15 November, 2009 Jimmy Case for me,to boss the midfield and look after the young un's like he did before, and for sheer presence, what a signing he was.
SNSUN Posted 15 November, 2009 Posted 15 November, 2009 I think we're perfectly fine in the keeper department. It has to be a striker - Pahars was the first to spring to mind from my generation.
Iowsaintsfan Posted 15 November, 2009 Posted 15 November, 2009 Ronnie Ekelund, CMFG, Anders Svensson, Killer
SW11_Saint Posted 15 November, 2009 Posted 15 November, 2009 Steve Williams in his prime. Word for word exactly what I was going to say! With the Dell ringing out "One Stevie Williams, there's only one Stevie Williams... One..." - he loved the adulation. Of course, it'd be SMS, but you know what I mean!
Hatch Posted 15 November, 2009 Posted 15 November, 2009 my first reaction would be steve williams, but I fear he would be wasted playing with players with only half his football intelligence and ability. So seeing as we are in Div 3, I plump for Neil Ruddock.
Bad Wolf Posted 15 November, 2009 Posted 15 November, 2009 We need defenders. Trotman is going back in Jan and Jiedi won't last long so I'm gonna say Jim Steele or Michael Svensson
swannymere Posted 15 November, 2009 Posted 15 November, 2009 This post belongs with the Alia Dia suggestion. Boooooo:x
beatlesaint Posted 15 November, 2009 Posted 15 November, 2009 my first reaction would be steve williams, but I fear he would be wasted playing with players with only half his football intelligence and ability. So seeing as we are in Div 3, I plump for Neil Ruddock. He wouldn't worry about that, he would get the ball on the edge of our penalty area, power down the middle and end up in their box before they knew if it was Christmas, Easter or New Years Day Best box to box midfielder I have ever seen in a Saints shirt, or many others for that matter.
gaz Posted 15 November, 2009 Posted 15 November, 2009 Theo's pace would be 20 goals a season. Crouchie's height would be 20. Either of them plus Rickie would be league champions by miles.
alpine_saint Posted 15 November, 2009 Posted 15 November, 2009 Some very good answers on this thread. Keegan, Ekelund, CMFG, Niemi. But I would deffo say Michael Svensson pre-injury.
saintquin Posted 15 November, 2009 Posted 15 November, 2009 Loads to choose from but, I think you could do a lot worse then having Alan Ball directing play from center of the midfield.
