benjii Posted 18 November, 2009 Posted 18 November, 2009 Wimbledon away at Plough Lane. The infamous game when Franny tried to decapitate John Fashanu with a neck high challenge . For the life of me I cant remember the score - although I do remember that the portaloos had windows opening onto the pitch meaning I did not not miss a minute of action when I went for a p*ss 3-3 I believe. I was there. Must have been one of my first away games.
Huntingdon Posted 18 November, 2009 Posted 18 November, 2009 West Ham, Rod Wallace scored, think it might have been the day of the Hillsborough tragedy. Still think London away days are the best. Football fans always remember what matches they were at on days like that. You're right, we won 2-1 at West Ham. It was my first away match when travelling by car with my mates I also remember being at The Dell on the day of the Bradford fire. I think we won that 2-1 as well
benjii Posted 18 November, 2009 Posted 18 November, 2009 I had to dig out my old diaries to confirm the exact date but mine was away to Burnley on 2nd January 1932. Still a very young lad we'd been visiting some relatives "oop north" for new year and couldn't get back - think it was something to do with limited trains on New Years Day. Stuck up there my Dad and Uncle (who we were visiting)) decided the delay home was fate as the mighty Saints were playing just up the road at Burnley and I was dragged along to watch. Don't remember a lot, I was too short to see anything except when I sat on Dad's shoulders for a while but I'll always remember we won 3-1. My Uncle was pleased as well, he was a Blackburn fan. No trouble in those days but lots of hats in the air when we scored, trilbys for us, flat caps for them. And not many trilbys either, in fact we may have been the only Saints fans there - transport wasn't easy back then and with no segregation I don't remember seeing any others. Been to many many more home and away since, but I'm just grateful to make it to the odd home game nowadays. I have a brilliant image of a sea of grizzled, weather beaten northern faces huddled together under a sea of grizzled, weather beaten northern flat caps, and a solitary shiny trilby emerging, like the first shoots of Spring, spinning gleefully in the air, whirling its own celebratory waltz to the hurrah of Saints latest goal. Great post
Kingsland Codger Posted 18 November, 2009 Posted 18 November, 2009 I would say 17 Sep 1969 away to Rosenborg in the Inter City Fairs Cup! Thank you for this. I believe I got the year wrong for the victory at Ibrox. It was 1974, not 1975 as I had posted.

Draino76 Posted 19 November, 2009 Posted 19 November, 2009 Mine was Man Citeh away, 3 - 3. Russel Osman scored a thunderbolt volley from outside the area. Regretably no mates from Surbiton were there. Anyone know the year?
St Michael Posted 19 November, 2009 Posted 19 November, 2009 Mine was the hideous 2-1 defeat to Swindon in the Premier League, 93/94 I believe - a season when Swindon conceded a Prem record 100 goals, yet we managed to lose to them. I missed the last coach back to Salisbury so had to phone my dad to come and fetch me. The journey home was pretty muted. Happy, happy days.
Junction 9 Posted 19 November, 2009 Posted 19 November, 2009 Saints at Highbury about 91/92 I would guess. Stood on the clock end terrace and watched Anders Limpar take us to bits.
thegaffer Posted 19 November, 2009 Posted 19 November, 2009 I was there as well seem to remember it was a Cliff Huxford own goal and the only song they sang was drink up ze zider... My first away game was season after England won the World Cup, West Ham with the three England stars playing Moore, Hurst and Peters and they had the famous Chicken run. Cant remeber the score. It might have been 2-2 A cup game against Bristol City. I think it must have been in 1967 / 68. We lost 1-0. At that time we were in the 1st division and they were in the second so in theory it was a cup upset.
EFM Posted 20 November, 2009 Posted 20 November, 2009 FF -this has turned from an interesting thread to a thoroughly enjoyable one. Stories from old or young are a pleasure. My first 3 visits were to Farton Park, including some mad friendly early 70s, the 74/75 2-1 and the following year's 1-0 (Micky Le God last minute and a hell of of a scrap) but first one I was old enough to go without me dad was 1977 Forest 3-3 FA Cup. An incredible game but also the most incredible away following - 10,000 to 12,000? We took the whole of their Trent End and a quarter of one side near by and they were overwhelmingly chased out the former. Fantastic game, atmosphere and on the coach home a stop for a few pints ordered bythe only one of us who looked remotely old enough. We were 15. What a day that was!
stinhk Posted 20 November, 2009 Posted 20 November, 2009 First away from the Dell was the 1979 League Cup final. I stood behind the goal on a 'stool' I had made from a few pieces of chipboard. My abiding memory of that was when Forest scored their fans silently erupted at the far end of the stadium and there was a fractional time lag before their cheer reached us.
simonsaints1 Posted 20 November, 2009 Posted 20 November, 2009 Mine was Bristol Rovers at Eastville in about 1977. A group of us got a train from Andover, changed at Salisbury and mingled with a large tribe of Skates on their way to Wrexham. We joined the packed train from Southampton and my abiding memory is how hundreds of Saints fans simply disappeared as they dived into the nearest pubs as we arrived in Bristol. This left our young crew to stroll around the streets near Rovers ground and face the hostility of the Tote Enders. (it was a requirement to tie your silk scarves around your wrist back then so we stood out a mile) I think it was 0.0

That was my Brothers 1st away game he would have been about 8 I was 11 we were discussing this thread (top 1 by the way) as he couldnt remember going to this game but he was there we were both in tears at the end having lost. As I have already posted mine was at the 1976 semi final at Stamford Bridge the funny thing is whilst my Brother cant remember going in 1979 he remembers clear as day me going to the final in 76 & him not being able to go as he was only 5 he is still not happy about it
cambsaint Posted 20 November, 2009 Posted 20 November, 2009 I still remember it well as going away was very unusual. Regrettably I can't remember my first home game only the memorable thrashings of Rotherham, and Wolves. A mate's Dad hired a minibus and we went from Romsey to Coventry for a Cup tie, in about 64/5. I seem to remember that Jimmy Hill had just taken over and the razamatazz of the Sky blues was news in those days. My first ever pro game was watching Cardiff City with my Dad and Uncle when they were in the first Division-I think we went because it was the Arsenal and we were staying at my Aunty's, but I was very young. I can still remember that it was pouring wirh rain and even in the stands we got soaked. My second was my next door neighbour (a real mancunian) taking me to watch Man U at Arsenal in the very early sixties.(With 65K in Highbury and about 5ft you didn't see very much-but the atmosphere was incredible). My Dad worked nearly every Saturday and living on the outskirts of Winchester it wasn't easy and also quite expensive to get to the Dell as a schoolboy.

The only cup-tie I can find around there was November 1959?
