Big Ron got 4  FFS wish I could remember the match but was too young , but do remember my Grandad getting threatened by some Chelsea scum :(

Not the earliest, but posibly the best ;)

Think mine was 2nd November 2002, away to Manchester United. We lost 2-1 with Fernandes scoring our goal. Will never forget Forlan scoring their winner, taking his shirt off, not being able to get it back on and being allowed to carry on playing with no shirt on, carrying his shirt in his hand.

Brighton 78 1-1 Williams. Flying sauce bottle. Special train stoped at Fareham on the way home, mayhem.

LOL my mate Keith who was stood next to me got hit by that bottle ... think he is still having therapy for his hatred of Tomato ketchup :D

Love to know who went to the earliest away match on this forum.

My first away game was Stamford Bridge, Boxing Day 1969 - we lost 3-0!

Anyone used to go away in the 50s or even 40s. My dad went to quite a few in the mid to late 50s.

Their can't be anyone still alive who went to away games pre-war can there?

Mine was also away at stamford bridge and my first Saints game but i think the year was 1970 and same result lost 3-0 can't remember much about it but do have a vivid memory of Terry Paine leading the players out from the tunnel with the ball in his hand my first ever vision of the Saints, my dad took me with my chelse supporting brother, poor me

One of our best ever away performances - remember it well.

I know and for a first away game at the age of 14 it was fantastic, but thought it would be like that every week.... oh dear. But it makes winning away now even sweeter.

Dellhurst Park and the Great Escape. Remember it like it was yesterday, i was only 11. Franny standing there and blocking a bullet with his chest on the line and Le God coming on and changing the game. Also, anybody else remember the massive ammounts of free kit-kat chunkys being handed out that day? i remember i had pocket fulls of them!!

Bournemouth in the FA cup, I think it was early 1950's. My dad played in the albion band and I remember being at the game at the Dell which was a draw and going to the replay by coach to Bournemouth organised I think buy the band. If my memory serves me right Saints lost, 2-1, I Think

It was FP in 65-66 with Uncle Leo, (I think it was with Leo) Dunc. We won by a few, a lot more 'friendlier rivalry' in those days (apparently). A guy called Dean was good..tbf, hardly remember. My first games at the Dell I have very good, vivid memories of, as it was so exciting.

The first game I really remember well was the early '69 cup clash at the Manor Ground where they had Atko and his brother I recall both playing. We were all young skinheads and Oxford never saw anything like us. My mum has a picture from the front page of the Oxford Mail with me on it.

Mine was the 31 August 1970.

Eight mins into the game Tommy Jenkins received a short pass from Dennis Hollywood right in front of me by the half way line (only a couple of yards away) and proceeded to run and dribble past the whole of the West Ham team before slipping the ball under the keeper.

At the time I thought this is great, better than home games. Little did I know that there were some horror shows to come in later years (charlton 6-2, derby 4-0).

My 1st away Game was Oxford.

it was an eye-opener. A larger than expected Saints support turned up, that they closed the turnstile at the away end well before kick-off!

We had to get into the Stand to the left and blag our way across to the Saints fans.

I only made it to the top of the steps into the Saints section, as it was absolutely rammed.

The home and away support were packed into a low-roof terrace with just a net hanging between the two sets.

Cant remember the score or date, but the one memory that keeps on coming back is seeing a policemans Helmet being tossed backwards over the heads of the saints fans from the front to the back.

In that low roof the sound was deafening. At that age I was bowled-over and thought if this is what away games are all about, then I wanted more of it...

what a way to be introduced to away-games.

Sound like the Christmas time fixture in 1975.

Might not be the earlist on here but no doubt one of the best... 2nd September 1967 at Stamford Bridge 6-2 to Saints.

Remember walking from the ground with my mate. We both had long Saints scarfs and he said we should hide them so not on show. Could not hide our smiles though.

They can't get any better than that.

I was living in Malaya at the time and we sometimes found the quickest way of getting the scores from England was in Sunday's Chinese papers (Monday was the day the English paper carried them). The only things that were printed in English apart from the names was 6 and 2. Me and my Dad were convinced for 24 hours the Chinese press had got the scores mixed up and we had really been beaten 6-2. What a shock on the Monday morning.

Was that the day when they had police horses on the terraces, or was that the other win we had Chelsea around that time

Fratton Park '84.

A good place to start.

Doesn't match the 1984 game but mine was also at F.Park for a "friendly" early 70s which we won 7-0 if I remember right!

Did stand on the North Bank for an Arsenal/Saints game when we lost 1-0 in the late 60's. Got some funny looks and a few unprintable comments but no trouble.

Tottenham in late 60's was worse. Got snowed off moments before the start and there was an announcement that those who had paid at the gate (like us) could get tickets for the re arranged game. Tottenham supporters were grabbing mit fulls and we never got near. Uncomfortable walk back to the coach as well. Still my 6ft knitted Saints scarf kept me warm.

Away to Leyton Orient in the 1960/61 season. We drew 1-1 and there was no real terracing, just an earth bank at one end where the away supoorters stood.

I remember going there with my father and grandfather the year my family moved to Kent from Southampton.

So it looks like you are winning so far as the earliest away match???

First away from the Dell was the ZDS Cup Final with my Dad...The first I went to of my own accord was with a Norwich supporting mate to Nottarf Krap...1-1, Darren Eadie brought down in the 96th minute and Fleck scored the resulting penalty. Our car got bottled on the way out!!

First away supporting the Saints was Sheffield Wednesday...In 2005/6 I think. We won 1-0 courtesy of Kenwyne Jones!

Spurs in the FA Cup in the early 90's. The replay was the famous 6-2.

It was Nov 25th 1953! We lost 3 - 1, though..

V Bolton in the cup after we beat Utd on penalties. I think it was 1992? 2-0 up and then let them back in it. Beat them in the replay then lost to Notts Forest in the next round.

Incredibly after all that time (with the exception of a couple of friendlies at Cheltenham and Gloucester City)...the first and only time I have seen us win away was the Bristol Rovers game - and even then we almost threw it away!

Some great memories though from away games..Villa in 1994/1995 when MLT equalised in the last minute from 35 yards! And I was in the away end with my Saints fan football coach! At 10 trying not to scream with joy is very difficult!!!

Cardiff away in 2006/7 we lost but managed to get a couple of chants going including 6-1 to Slovenia chant that really annoyed the thugs in the Grange End!

Swindon away - I won't talk about that!

Looking forward to Exeter City in Feb or possibly Hereford if we get them in the JPT Regional finals.

Brighton in the lateish 70's - can't remember the score.

Probably Jan 1978 as I think that was the only time we were in the same division for quite a few years, it was 1-1 and Steve Williams scored. Went on a "football special " train, it had no lighting so sat in darkness all the way home !!

Bristol City - FA Cup 3rd round (I think)

Lost 1-0 (Cliff Huxford own goal (I think)

Around 1966-67 (Fitzhugh Fella will put me right)

I remember being dead impressed with the size of their Kop end we were standing on and singing 'Matthew and Son' by Cat Stevens along with the PA.

I was an 11 year old from Norn Iron seeing Saints at Old Trafford in April '72 on a school trip. I had no idea then that I'd move here later and become a fanatical Saints fan. Saints lost 3-2 and it was the only time I got to see Ron Davies, Mick C et al. I wasn't a Saints fan then - I had no reason to be, but luckily all 5 goals were scored down our end (3-0 to Man U at h/time) and I remember being more impressed with Ron D than George Best (who scored a pen if I haven't made that up), Bobby Charlton, Ian S-M and all the Man U so called stars.

The next Saints game I saw was April (I think) 1989 - anyway, last game of the season at The Dell and Saints beat Man U 2-1 to stay up - or so I remember it. Historians will no doubt correct me if my memory is playing tricks. And while I am humble in the presence of so many lifelong Saints but can anyone beat 17 years between their first and second Saints game, (not that it is something top celebrate)?

A cup game against Bristol City. I think it must have been in 1967 / 68.

We lost 1-0. At that time we were in the 1st division and they were in the second so in theory it was a cup upset.

Same. Remember it as quite a scary experience. Having to stand at the back of a covered terrace with a **** poor view (no segregation) listening to endless choruses of "Drink up your cider!"

Also went to a cup came at Oxford a few years later, Ron Atkinson was their skipper I think. However my favourite early away game was in Jan 71 when we beat Spuds at WHL.

Ipswich, 1995. Lost 2-1. Was at the height of the Grobelaar match-fixing allegations and the pressure obviously got to him.

And some Suffolk carrot-cruncher called us "riff-raff". Us! Very hurtful for a sensitive 10 year old :( never liked them since...

18 Feb 1967 - 4th Round and you were right Huxford scored the own goal.

We had beaten Barrow in the 3rd round!

I can recall the locals crowing about 'beating the millionaires who had bought success'! We had spent £50 000 on Ron Davies!
