Love to know who went to the earliest away match on this forum.

My first away game was Stamford Bridge, Boxing Day 1969 - we lost 3-0!

Anyone used to go away in the 50s or even 40s. My dad went to quite a few in the mid to late 50s.

Their can't be anyone still alive who went to away games pre-war can there?

My First Away game was Crystal Palace 1964 cannot remember the score although I did go to White Hart Lane and Villa Park in 1963 but they were neutral games

26.12.70 - Boxing Day. Arsenal away. White pitch, blue lines, orange ball. Constant Arsenal pressure with Eric Martin a hero and Hughie Fisher nearly nicking it for us. 0-0.

Why not? Someone that went with their Dad aged 5 in 1939 would be 75 now. There are Saints fans over the age of 75 you know ;)

I think mine was a 2-2 with Chelsea, when we were 2-0 up at the Bridge and threw it all away. Ken Monkou scored the equalizer very late on, and up till two months ago we have been throwing leads away ever since!! lol

The year of the Chelsea 2-2 was 1989, but it was November 1989, and my first game was the month before when we won 4-1 at QPR the week before we beat Liverpool 4-1 at The Dell.

A cup game against Bristol City. I think it must have been in 1967 / 68.

We lost 1-0. At that time we were in the 1st division and they were in the second so in theory it was a cup upset.

I was there - the most one sided game I ever saw!

How did Eric never get picked for Scotland after that match and Brown the Scottish manager was there too!

On here?

Just don't think fans went away in those days - the travel was too problematical. Happy to hear from anyone to prove me wrong though!

One of our best ever away performances - remember it well.

Sept 10th 1955, away to Aldershot - we lost 2 3 (of course).

The Recreation Ground was rather odd - you paid to go in and then paid again to sit down. At half time the supports behind the goals walked down to the other end,

I remember my first game at the Dell vividly. But I'm not sure what was the first away. It was either Brighton for an evening game, or Liverpool. Which ever was first they were only a couple of weeks apart. Circa 1980 (ish). My mates dad and uncle drove us to Brighton and between them drank a bottle of Whisky on the terraces and then drove us home mullered. Happy days.

For the Liverpool game the same guy ran a coach mostly full of his extended family and significant numbers didn't make the coach home for various reasons.

January (not sure of the actual date) 1970. Spurs 0 Southampton 1 (Davies, of course).

Also my first glimpse of hooliganism, on the terraces directly below me - a few Spurs fans fighting each other at the final whistle.

plymouth boxing day 1976 alan balls debut.1-1 superted.3000 saints there.went on travel coach aged 11 and knew that it would be the last.

92/93 season, Coventry. Lost 2-0, atrocious weather. Fat Boy Micky Quinn scored. We were absolute dross. Looking back at the team sheet, somehow Branfoot managed to get Doddsy, Franny, Kenna and Micky Adams in the same starting XI (I presume this was when Franny was still classed as a winger!)

Oct. 1970 Chelsea away drew 2-2

Just turned 15. Went on a coach with my mate, his cousin and uncle. Got very drunk in a W.M.C. that we stopped off at on the way home.

Started the habit of a lifetime...getting drunk that is!

West Ham away August 1970 1-1. Got Geoff Hurst's autograph outside the ground before the game. Tommy Jenkins gave us the lead with what might be the finest solo goal of all time, going past defender after defender and leaving Bobby Moore floundering. What a shame it wasn't filmed. Jimmy Greaves got a dodgy penalty for them to equalise. It was an evening game so we had a day out in London before, including going to the top of the Post Office Tower (now BT Tower) which you could do in those days.

Dad took me to Bristol City 1966 at Easter Saints won 1-0 on their way to promotion, cant remeber too much about the game but can remember stood down the side of the groung where the Dolman Stand now stands.

Oh, bugger off all of you! :-) I can't remember but it was late sixties and I still reckon I beat Duncan!:-) If any of you have read Fever Pitch.. I lived in the same town, went to the same Maidenhead United games mentioned in the book, and had freedom to go up to London on my own at an early age (how times change)... So it would have been Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs, etc. I definitely remember a 3-1 win at Spurs with Chivers scoring 2.. I was on The Shelf and cheering for the opposition was definitely not a good idea!

Mine was Sheffield Wednesday in 1999/2000. Sat in the home end. We won 1-0 by a penalty, kept quiet when we scored out of fear.

Havn't seen us win there since.

(Ok, was never going to win, but wanted to share.)

Millwall away lost 4-0 got thrown out before halftime for my own saftey, can't remember the year though, early 70s.

That was Oct '74. Our first season back in the old Div. 2.

A whole load went up from Eastleigh. Duncan, ask Ian Mead about the little Millwall fan with the axe in the ground.

Autumn 1978 Elm Park Reading V Saints League cup very unlucky 0 - very fortuitous 0. I could only get a ticket from a Reading supporting mate on the Notorious South Bank, it was great fun watching Saints fans being told off for climbing further and further up the Floodlight Pylon.

great start for me at fratton too. Mine was the 2-1 win, boxing day 1974 (?) in the corner between the fratton end and the south stand(old man is a skate !)

quite scary, but a decent result !!

Posted

I think it must have been 1960 at Fratton went with my dad and uncle some how we got in the wrong end, my dad was an ex RSM and both he and my uncle were built like brick out houses.

Fratton Park in April 76. Was only 10 & went down there with a mate & his Dad. Channon sent them down to the old Div 3 if I remember correctly. First home was Channon's testimonial straight after the cup win. Hooked ever since.

I can remember being at Dean Court on 23rd April 1960, our promotion season. Saints

won 3-1. I know that I was at Loftus Road 4 weeks earlier but have no recollection of

the game.

Farton Prak April 1976. Channon 1-0, thanks very much!!! :D

The second one was a little fixture at Wembley the first day of the following month,

My first away game was at Swindon in October 1963.Swindon were undeafted at home and took an early lead. Chivers equalised and Paine got the winner. I remember running around the ground with my rattle frantically rotating in joyous celebration. The home fans just smiled at us!!
