hamster Posted 13 November, 2009 Share Posted 13 November, 2009 Just wandering what it felt like and is it one of those things that you never ever forget? I got a 'hole in two' at Paultons last weekend and it felt pretty good. It was also the first time I have ever done it in 50! Not brilliant I know especially bearing in mind that we have St Will as our very own SWF representative on the pro circuit. Hope all's going well Will, where are you next playing? Good luck mate, dtsrt to enjoy your golf again, we aree all rooting for you. My 9 holes the other day are what will make me go back for more. Golf truly is a fantastic pastime. What is YOUR best golfing experience?
John Boy Saint Posted 13 November, 2009 Share Posted 13 November, 2009 I played years ago when I was a nipper on Holiday in Falmouth on the Pitch & Putt that was run by the farmer who's farm we were staying on so we got rates for mates. On 2 occasions I managed a hole in one twice on the longest hole which was well over 100 yrds. That until 2 months ago (about 30 years on) was my only flirtation with Golf. At the beginning of September whilst staying away with work, the Hotel we were staying at has a British Par 3 Championship course in the grounds and my bosses were eager to get out there every evening. Having sat in my room for about half an hour I decided to go and see what they were up to, they said did I want a go, and that was it I was out there every evening having a good time with my "Happy Gilmour swing" holding my own. When I got home I had a look at getting some clubs, then by some quirk of fate I ended up winning a set of Wilson Deep Red clubs in very good nick on Ebay for £41 then added parts of a mates second set that were missing from mine. I went down the range with a mate and got into the swing of things, he suggested that we try the 18 hole Par 69 up the road which turned out to be a mare for me. So I booked some lessons and got better at a rate of knots, so he decided that we should try the 18 holes again. I was much happier until I tee'd off at the first: what a stinker. It destroyed my first nine in my head and led to going out in 74!! At the turn I was ready to go home, then pulled out the Driver made a sweet contact and distance that seemed to pull me back into line. Respectability returned with each stroke then on the 365yrd 4 par 13th a moment of glory a sound drive got me a good way down the track, my second between the trees with and 8 iron saw a sweet strike of the ball a skip over a nasty bunker with the ball coming to rest on the slope up to a raised green, my next shot was a perfect chip up on to the green and a, little as seen on TV, arced run straight into the hole for my first Birdie. As you can probably tell I was a happy boy. I ended up coming home 15 over which for a novice I was happy with. Shame the weather and the light is so crap at the moment, roll on next summer. There you go my minor contribution to this thread :-) As for your Hole in One the guy at our local American Golf who plays off 9 said, when I was buying my shoes, that in over 30 years of playing he has never had a Hole in One! dubai_phil Posted 13 November, 2009 Share Posted 13 November, 2009 Was in the US for a conference month or so back. They had a "Networking Day" ie a Golf Day. Big Corporate America at work.... It was a Texas Scramble (don't think they do that at Pitch & Putts so just for Hamster) it means your team all take a shot, you pick the best one, then all play your next shot from there. Now I'd done that before it's good fun and lets everyone have "a moment".. What WAS odd before we got going was the queue for some bloke selling cloakroom tickets and cutting up pieces of string. Apparently you could buy a "Mulligan" (that's the chance to have another go when you eff it up Hammie) or a length of string..... Which you use to extend your actual shot..... Now I'm thinking, this ain't the way to play golf but anyway once one team had made a purchase we all had no real choice so we all got round to it.... Already mentioned that one of our team turned out to be a Pro on the Nationwide Tour in the US - lol how good was HE - longest drive - 364 yards downwind on a par 5... so he's sort of explaining all these strange new rules as we bumble around. So we get to this Par 3, DP plays a luverly 8 iron about 4 feet from the hole - VERY rare for me to even get it on the green let alone close. The guys in the team hoot and laugh and tell me that was an expensive shot. They walk to the ball, measure from the marker to the hole, cut the string and tell me I now have to buy beer for the whole tournament as I just got a hole in one.... I'm like - You feckin Yanks are feckin weird, that's like cheating - but oh no, back to the pro shop, lots of slapping on the back a souvenir Golf Shirt from the club pro, and I'm like - but it wasn't a feckin hole in one I normally take at least 3 putts from 3 feet... Cost me just over $150 for the drinks. Ain't playing golf with no damned cheating Yanks again (Nice Dry Fit Golf Shirt though!) Golf, gaelic for F*ck. Greatest mind f*ck ever invented but the source of some wonderful moments for anyone who ever plays it (amongst the hours of temper tantrums and frustration!) I'll pop back up on the Sports Thread next week for you Hammie with some updates from behind the scenes at the DWC (Race To Dubai) another way to get great moments out of Golf
