A PRISONER was attacked with boiling water after he ignored the two-minute silence to honour our war dead.

The victim was one of eight Muslim inmates who carried on playing table tennis at Belmarsh, South East London.

A non-Muslim prisoner objected and threw water over the man who was taken to hospital with scalding burns.

A jail source said last night: "It may seem strange, but some prisoners have a great sense of national pride."

tbf I wouldn't expect a Muslim to observe our 2 minute silence. So imo the prisoner was wrong.

Saying that though, I guess the Muslim could have stopped playing table tennis and stepped out the room for 2 mins.

Who knows who's right and who's wrong on this occasion, six of one half a dozen of the other?

800,000 Muslims fought with the Allies in WWII in the Indian Army. Over 3 million Muslims died in WWI.

Why wouldn't they observe it?

Why, doesn't state his nationality.

Surely it does?

Take another look: http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/campaigns/our_boys/2724598/Queen-leads-Armistice-Day-ceremony-for-World-War-1-veterans.html#ixzz0We6kMwRC

It doesn't make what happened right! I wonder what may have happened if an English prisoner had carried on playing?

I agree but each individual has a free will to observe customs in this country.

He was plain stupid in using the silence if he wanted to make a point.

I watched last night's game on the TV, during the silence (impeccably observed IMO) I noticed two silly girls chatting away. Even 'our own' don't all observe it!

Sorry ESB, Muslim is not a nationality; chances are the scalded bloke IS English.

Isn't Belmarsh the nick where the Islamic terrorists are locked up?

It's the most secure prison in the UK and holds many different prisoners, not just politically risky ones. It is also a remand centre attached to Woolwich Crown Court and a local prison.

alliances change as the taliban show us.

That's not what I was getting at though. The fact that fellow Muslims fought and gave their lives in two World Wars, and numerous other conflicts should be reason enough to acknowledge the two-minutes silence.

so by this measure then..all those that didnt observe the 2mins silence at 11am on the 11th (im one of them, was in the car talking to my kids) should have hot water thrown over them, also the odd idiot who made noises at football matches up and down the country should have the same? People see the Muslim part of that story and instantly judge

There were young adults at SMS last night laughing and joking during the silence last night.

Then they should have been shown the error of their ways.

Agree, not with boiling water but a smack up the ear maybe.

Justmike, perhaps you could explain why you do not believe the silence should be observed, if of course, that is what you believe or was it that you overlooked it or it was the only time you could speak with your kids, kinda think you missed an ideal opportunity to explain to your children what it would have been for

Whose better - violent convict who throws boiling water over another convict; or a n other law abiding citizen who doesn't remain silent for whatever reason. BTW, I normally do, but try to make sure I'm not in a crowd. I'm sure there's some years I've forgotten, and I wouldn't be entirely surprised if I've unwittingly blundered through someone else's silence on one occasion maybe.

I saw that, but in their defence I think they were giggling because they had noticed themselves on the big screen. That must be annoying, the only time you've ever got to see yourself and you can't jump up and down, act like a spaz or or pull a moonie.
