hypochondriac Posted 11 November, 2009 Posted 11 November, 2009 ...And if not the best then the 2nd best behind Leeds . It's just nice to say and I'm loving seeing us scoring tons and rolling these supposed "promotion chasers" over. The MK Dons game was my favourite so far but this was good too!
Legod Third Coming Posted 11 November, 2009 Posted 11 November, 2009 The fact is we are the most expensive team in the league. We should win every game, just as Chelsea should.
St Landrew Posted 11 November, 2009 Posted 11 November, 2009 The fact is we are the most expensive team in the league. We should win every game, just as Chelsea should. Ok, ok, they're getting their act together. Even Real Madrid's players need to know who they're playing alongside, in order to make the most of what they have.
SNSUN Posted 11 November, 2009 Posted 11 November, 2009 We haven't played Leeds or Norwich yet - they'll be a measure of how far we've come in a short space of time. This season was supposed to be one of consolidation - but as the unbeaten run goes on we all now think we can achieve the seemingly impossible - a place in the top 6 at the end of the season. After the Bristol Rovers defeat in the League, people were questioning Pardew, but it goes to show that patience is a virtue. I'm just looking forward to each game as it comes tonight. Roll on Brighton. (Though I'll be at stupid work. :-()

Too true - you can have the best players in the world and still be pooh, manager and club harmony is crucial
Leslie Charteris Posted 11 November, 2009 Posted 11 November, 2009 Who in this league should we fear? No one in my opinion. Respect, yes, but fear, no. Norwich in the southern semi-final would be a good test and then a nice little trip to Wembley!
Colinjb Posted 11 November, 2009 Posted 11 November, 2009 Yeah, we are easily one of the best. THE best? Possibly.
Saint_Jonny Posted 11 November, 2009 Posted 11 November, 2009 I think that Leeds are THE best team in the league, getting ahead of ourselves to say we are better than them. If we were THE best team in the league we'd have at least 5 more points about now imo, even with the slow start. When we beat Leeds on the 19th of December I will agree with you

hypochondriac Posted 11 November, 2009 Author Posted 11 November, 2009 You missed out the southern area final. No need to consider it. We will walk it
Thedelldays Posted 12 November, 2009 Posted 12 November, 2009 Been saying this for months. We should be very disapoijted if we fail to win a home game against anyone in this league. That is not an always was not unrealistic the suggestions at the start of the season of "just staying up" were laughable and were unrealistic. We may miss out in the playoffs fr obvious reasons but I EXPECT us to be very close at least.
CB Fry Posted 12 November, 2009 Posted 12 November, 2009 The fact is we are the most expensive team in the league. We should win every game, just as Chelsea should. Correct. Wes Tender Posted 12 November, 2009 Posted 12 November, 2009 I think that Leeds are THE best team in the league, getting ahead of ourselves to say we are better than them. If we were THE best team in the league we'd have at least 5 more points about now imo, even with the slow start. When we beat Leeds on the 19th of December I will agree with you We are where we are because of the slow start. In the past few matches sequence, we couldn't possibly have more points than we have apart from turning one draw into a win, gaining just two more points. Granted that we might have picked up more points from that early sequence, but factors like a lack of pre-season, many new players needing to gel, Pardew having to experiment with various formations and getting the players to understand what he wanted, are all factors. Also players fitness has undoubtedly improved under him too. Psychologically, the -10 points was also a burden for us. Now that we are once more in clear water, look how we have surged forward with confidence blossoming and support growing. We have beaten Charlton and MK Dons in second and third place and Colchester could only draw with us much earlier on in the campaign. Apart from Leeds, who should we fear in this division? IMO we would beat Leeds at home, if not away.
West End Saint Posted 12 November, 2009 Posted 12 November, 2009 Dont know about the best team but we are a very good team winning is a great habit to get into massive amount of confidence we are on the up. Well done to AP he has brought some great players in and is getting the best out of players like Lallana & Spiderman. The future is bright in Red & White cant wait for Sunday if we get out of the relegation zone it is going off we will start to get 25000 + who knows we might make the play offs I am loving being a Saint.
keithd Posted 12 November, 2009 Posted 12 November, 2009 pride comes before a fall and all that yes, we're good, one of the better teams. and yes we're gelling quite nicely now. my worry is only how we deal with a defeat, especially if we are subject to some bad luck. the bounceback is important. that said i see no reason why we cant go 25 unbeaten, rest of the season unbeaten even! massive ask of course, but if we're one of the best teams hell why not now, back to reality, being a Saints fan and all that.

IMO we would beat Leeds at home, if not away. At the moment we are probably the best team but what counts is the best team over the season so lets hope our good run continues with no injuries to key players. The first season Leeds were in League one their results were very good in the first half of the season then tailed off I think . We should not get too complacent and expect a win every game. I am sure AP will react to the current situation and hopefully make the squad stronger in January
Scummer Posted 12 November, 2009 Posted 12 November, 2009 The first season Leeds were in League one their results were very good in the first half of the season then tailed off I think. That was when Wise and Poyet left, and McCallister took over wasn't it?
Prince Jazzbo Posted 12 November, 2009 Posted 12 November, 2009 (edited) I'm really happy with our current form, and I think we are one of the best sides in the league. However, I'm slightly concerned at our ability or lack of it to keep a clean sheet. There are going to be games when we are 1-0 and we need to be able to shut out the opposition and stop them from scoring. At the moment, they're consolation goals but eventually they'll turn out to be goals that earn a draw or a late win. Edited 12 November, 2009 by Prince Jazzbo
Tom28 Posted 12 November, 2009 Posted 12 November, 2009 Tell me about it, I was literally just saying after Bart made that save and Thomas cleared the ball back out to the Charlton right wing, that it would be good to finally get a clean sheet. Winger whips the ball in, goal. Oh well, there's always next time....
eelpie Posted 12 November, 2009 Posted 12 November, 2009 ...And if not the best then the 2nd best behind Leeds . It's just nice to say and I'm loving seeing us scoring tons and rolling these supposed "promotion chasers" over. The MK Dons game was my favourite so far but this was good too! Wait till we have played Norwich, Leeds and Millwall again, then perhaps we can realistically assess our relative strengths. One match at at time, and all that... But why not? We can do it!
alpine_saint Posted 12 November, 2009 Posted 12 November, 2009 Without the -10 we would be in 8th place, and since any table of form in all competitions will clearly show us to be the pick of the Leauge, we would be scaring the 7 clubs above us sh*tless. When I put all these facts together, it is the only time I feel any resentment towards Pinnacle. Heaven knows where we would be if ML, NC and AP had received an extra month to sort things out...

Lots of fans were very keen on Pinnacle and MLT at the time . But compared with six months ago we are now in an excellent situation better than we could have probably hoped for
oldsarum Posted 12 November, 2009 Posted 12 November, 2009 I'm happy with our current form and performances, but we must not get ****y or complacent. Everyone got carried away before the Orient game but we almost mucked it up, on our day we are certainly one of the top 3 teams in this league but we shouldn't take things for granted, we need to work hard and be consistant if we are to continue our cuurent excellent run.
RedAndWhite91 Posted 12 November, 2009 Posted 12 November, 2009 I wouldn't say we have the best team in the league. But we're definitely in the top 1.
Dark Munster Posted 12 November, 2009 Posted 12 November, 2009 Without the -10 we would be in 8th place, and since any table of form in all competitions will clearly show us to be the pick of the Leauge, we would be scaring the 7 clubs above us sh*tless. Fan The Flames Posted 12 November, 2009 Posted 12 November, 2009 What I liked about last nights play was that the team had a real buzz about them, the clubs had a buzz for awhile and now the team has. There was a fizz of energy, players giving each other options, classy moves, constant positive play. All illustrations of a good team spirit and high in confidence, it must be great to be a part of, its certainly good to watch. So for these reasons we are up there with the best. As a third div outfit these players won't be the best we've ever had but I do predict we will reflect fondly of them in years to come.
Andy_Porter Posted 12 November, 2009 Posted 12 November, 2009 Norwich will be a massive test. If we can beat them then i'd say we're probably the best team in the league. Best team i've seen us play this season is still Huddersfield but I think that may be something to do with Perry, Thomas and Lancashire being given the run around, I doubt they would look so good against our team now. So long as we keep our momentum going all season we should get play offs, just need to make sure we don't lose two in a row or go 2-3 games without winning. That's what would kill our play off chances any sort of dip in form.
the colonel Posted 12 November, 2009 Posted 12 November, 2009 Met Paul Merson this afternoon. Asked him to dish the dirt on MLT but as I already new, he said he is one of the best and one of the good guys, nothing to tell. I don't rate PM much on his commentry on Sky but he thought Saints are doing really well and that we would get automatic prmotion this season. He never said much about 'arry other than when he first spoke to him 'arry said that pompey are **** and he needs to replace the whole squad.....which then as we know lead to their promotion!!!
Legod Third Coming Posted 12 November, 2009 Posted 12 November, 2009 Correct. Correct. Astute observations for a man who argued with me about buying the most expensive players available...
Cabrone Posted 12 November, 2009 Posted 12 November, 2009 Don't think we're the best as there's not much to choose between us, Leeds, Norwich, Charlton and Millwall. Whether we are the best or not, no-one will look forward to playing us this season.
Victor Posted 13 November, 2009 Posted 13 November, 2009 The fact is we are the most expensive team in the league. We should win every game, just as Chelsea should. QUOTE] 'The most expensive' - that is interesting. I wouldn't have thought it was by a large margin. Please supply the figures for the top most 'expensive' teams in League 1, or point me to your source. It doesn't follow, of course, that we are, or should be, the best - clubs may be quoted figures the seller knows they can afford, expensive players often turn out to be duds, an astute manager will pick up good players cheaply, you could spend more money on one player than the whole cost of other League 1 teams and put him in a team of donkeys etc. etc. Also, not all our players are ours to keep - yet. If what you say were true, football would be an extremely boring - and somewhat pointless - spectacle.

IMO we would beat Leeds at home, if not away. Quite right. And over the last 5 games we have got more points than Leeds, equalled only by Millwall. The table is distorted by the results in August/Sept. Not only for us, because if it wasn't for the early season, Charlton would be down the bottom. What matters is from here on and with two home games coming up, this is a great opportunity to start moving up. It is like watching paint dry even if you get maximum points most games as progress is inevitably slow, but by the time we play Leeds on 19 Dec, the table could look very different from now.

All we can do is win every game. In some games we might gain nothing on a team above us, in others we will leap if they fail (particularly of course this will happen if we beat that team). A run of wins from now until Christmas could see us bordering the top six easily and from there nothing is impossible!
CHAPEL END CHARLIE Posted 13 November, 2009 Posted 13 November, 2009 Quite right. And over the last 5 games we have got more points than Leeds, equalled only by Millwall. To say the table is ' distorted ' by our early results is a akin to saying that the fall of France in May 1940 distorted the course of World War II . The early season results are a matter of record/historical fact whether we like them or not .

The early season results are a matter of record/historical fact whether we like them or not . Not that it is my job to defend others' comments, I believe he meant that the current table is no reflection on current form which if extrapolated over the remainder of the season will see a completely different shape to the table So while early season results are a matter of record, they may not be so significant in the long run. In the same way, that had Hitler only invaded Belgium we might all have turned a blind eye...
NickG Posted 13 November, 2009 Posted 13 November, 2009 but bear no resemblance to the team we are now playing, our results consistantly since this team has been together and how we are likely to continue to perform. Those results are maybe a third of our results now but will only amount to a sixth (not worked out figures but you get the point) of the total season and the table when it matters.
CanadaSaint Posted 13 November, 2009 Posted 13 November, 2009 Based on points totals over the past five years, we need 2.57 points per game from now on to be champions, 2.33 PPG to finish second, and 1.99 PPG to sneak into the playoffs. I had a spare few minutes! :smt053 It's gonna happen!

Especially as I don't recall the last time we won 2.57, 2.33 or 1.99 points for beating someone!!!

Still, it makes a nice change to be doing that for the top of the table, eh?
Dalek2003 Posted 13 November, 2009 Posted 13 November, 2009 WE ARE STILL IN THE RELEGATION ZONE. Can we get out of this before we start giving ourselves grand labels !

NickG Posted 13 November, 2009 Posted 13 November, 2009 WE ARE STILL IN THE RELEGATION ZONE. Can we get out of this before we start giving ourselves grand labels ! nothing to do with the standard of the team.
Legod Third Coming Posted 13 November, 2009 Posted 13 November, 2009 WE ARE STILL IN THE RELEGATION ZONE. Can we get out of this before we start giving ourselves grand labels ! We started from the pit lane. But Jim is at the wheel and Herbie is cruising! Just enjoy the overtaking manoeuvres...
St Will Posted 13 November, 2009 Posted 13 November, 2009 Can you do me a favour - how many games do we need to win to average 2.57 points? Lots.
CanadaSaint Posted 13 November, 2009 Posted 13 November, 2009 Can you do me a favour - how many games do we need to win to average 2.57 points? By my reckoning we need to win 26.55 games out of our last 31 to average that 2.57 and end up as champions. As good as we seem to be in this league, I don't see that happening. But we can certainly make the playoffs. We need 20.56 wins (and no draws) to end up with 74 points. But I don't think it will take that many points to finish sixth this year because there seems to be more equilibrium in the top 2/3 of the division. Now look what you've made me do.
Glasgow_Saint Posted 13 November, 2009 Posted 13 November, 2009 If we drop a single point from now till the end of the season then SERIOUS questions need to be asked.
St Will Posted 13 November, 2009 Posted 13 November, 2009 If we drop a single point from now till the end of the season then SERIOUS questions need to be asked. I think we're allowed a couple of draws away at Norwich and Leeds TBF
