krissyboy31 Posted 12 November, 2009 Posted 12 November, 2009 I rememember that god awful game....... Bart was horrendous flapping at literally everything... but to be fair everyone had a mare that day..... anyone remember who it was that we had on loan that day that loooked like theyed never played football in their life?.. the worst game ive seen any footballer have ever... what was his name? This the guy? http://www.readingfc.co.uk/page/ProfilesDetail/0,,10306~33579,00.html
SoccerMom Posted 12 November, 2009 Posted 12 November, 2009 Alan Bennet thereafter was reasonable, but yes that day he looked more like Thora Hird
Andy_Porter Posted 12 November, 2009 Posted 12 November, 2009 Alan Bennett and Chris Makin start as our two centre halfs. Burley should have just been sacked then. Those two made Scowcroft look like Didier Drogba, one of the more depressing Saints games. So glad that era is behind us.
Crab Lungs Posted 12 November, 2009 Posted 12 November, 2009 I was so glad to see Bart get through this unscathed and perform solidly. He was never the same keeper after his horrific leg break at Newcastle and steadily declined - but that appears to have ended now and I wish Bart all the best in reclaiming his form. What we forget is that he was so young at the time he came in and I can probably understand if the pressure of the playoff game got to him. Fair play to him for sticking around and fair play to those who are helping him rebuild his career and confidence. He was a fantastic prospect at 18-19 and he's still only 22, so has plenty of time to recapture and rebuild his game.
Deanovski Posted 12 November, 2009 Posted 12 November, 2009 and that other defender who played like 1 game, makin thats him
Mr X Posted 12 November, 2009 Author Posted 12 November, 2009 This the guy? http://www.readingfc.co.uk/page/ProfilesDetail/0,,10306~33579,00.html ahh yes allan bennett .......... literally the worst performance in history by any saints player..... still he did improve after that
SFC Forever Posted 13 November, 2009 Posted 13 November, 2009 Bart did well enough against Charlton and came for some crosses that Kelvin just wouldn't have thought about. If Bart gets his confidence back I would hope that he could be the keeper he was before breaking his leg.
Saint_clark Posted 13 November, 2009 Posted 13 November, 2009 Personally I'd prefer to reward the good performances and play him in the JPT as long as he's playing well. If we were to make it to the final, it would be in part to his performance in goal and he would thoroughly deserve his place in the final team. Same with Davis if we made the playoff final or when we play Chelsea in the FA Cup final. Sorry, but I think it would be wrong to deny Davis a chance to lift a trophy at Wembley, seeing as he is our number one and club captain.
david in sweden Posted 13 November, 2009 Posted 13 November, 2009 (edited) Bart did well enough against Charlton and came for some crosses that Kelvin just wouldn't have thought about. If Bart gets his confidence back I would hope that he could be the keeper he was before breaking his leg. A Cup is the Cup. You don't drop three points if you lose. A perfect opportunity to give Bart a game. What if it were a Wembley final and we HAD to play him ? AP had the perfect opportunity to see Bart in action v. one of this leagues top sides. IF anything were to happen to KD, he'd have to decide on another keeper immediately - so for Saints it was a win-win situation. If he did OK then we know he's a good prospect, had it gone the other way, he'd have one foot out of the door in January. Now we know... " the boy did alright ". We have FOUR keepers on the books + two Academy lads and somewhere we have to make the cut. Few people would deny that Kelvin Davis is an automatic first choice, and looking back over 50 years - I'd prefer one keeper who is regular and on form, rather than using 3 or 4 every season 'cos no-one is consistant. Hard luck on the guy who sits on the bench every week but, just since the 76 Cup Final we've had ; Wells, Gennoe, Katalinic, some fellow called ..Shilton ?..who was an automatic choice for FIVE years! then came Burridge...and still Tim Flowers was on the bench...then he had FOUR years before move to Blackburn, England and greater glory. Grobbelaar, Beasant, Taylor; then Paul Jones.. for FIVE seasons ..and then came Antti Niemi (a legend himself) in those last Prem.days.(and to think BOTH played in the same FA Cup Final ! As for those others, they all had good/bad days but few were really consistent ..or shall I add.. YOUNG. Most good keepers are older ..over 30. Those with longer memories will recall Pat Jennings (Spurs) still playing internationals at 44, and Shilton stood in a World Cup when past 40, and even later turned out in one game (for Leyton Orient in 1996) when he was 50. Bart has a long way to go, but Wednesdays game did his reputation no harm at all. Edited 13 November, 2009 by david in sweden
hoozonside10 Posted 13 November, 2009 Posted 13 November, 2009 looked huge and played with confidence. Couldn't ask any more of your reserve keeper. Is he happy to play second fiddle or is he desperate for a move? I understand that Bart is happy here and has no plans to leave at the moment. His missus is pregnant and they like the area. Yes I am ITK - at last.....WOO-HOO!
David Strover Posted 14 November, 2009 Posted 14 November, 2009 Crystal Palace beat Saints 4-1 on the opening day of that particular season. I can't help feeling if Kelvin had conceded the same goal against Charlton as Bart did there would be rash of 'he's ****' posts on this forum. It was a volley, not a header but a volley, inside the six yard box. Surely the keeper should be challenging for this? Having said that Bart coming out for crosses was a lot better than his recent matches for Saints and if he keeps up this progress Kelvin should not be able to get away with a bad game anymore.
David Strover Posted 14 November, 2009 Posted 14 November, 2009 Oh and I'm pretty certain he didn't 'break his leg' at Newcastle either.
Crab Lungs Posted 14 November, 2009 Posted 14 November, 2009 Oh and I'm pretty certain he didn't 'break his leg' at Newcastle either. Oh yes, I forget, I stand corrected. I can be such a bad boy sometimes.
bpsaint Posted 14 November, 2009 Posted 14 November, 2009 Crystal Palace beat Saints 4-1 on the opening day of that particular season. My bad,got that result mixed up with the Lazio friendly the week before.
David Strover Posted 14 November, 2009 Posted 14 November, 2009 Oh yes, I forget, I stand corrected. I can be such a bad boy sometimes. Well fair's fair a leg break is very serious injury - mind you I think he did his ligaments or summit and I've done that so I know that depending on the injury it can be more serious than clean break. No consolation if you actually break your leg mind you!
