Who went to every Cup game in '76?

Oh yes! He was a bit of a lad our Ian. Went all through school with him and his brother, Colin, was in my brother's class. We've been in a few scrapes together and also had a few fallings out (Ian is a Celtic bhoy) wisely, on my behalf, stopping short of fisticuffs!

Ian didn't get to see the 76 Final in person. He was 'otherwise engaged', if you get my drift.

Blimey ESB - are you a Bellemoor Boy?

I seem to remember an Ian Mead that went there in the 1970's - pretty sure he had a brother called Colin. I think Ian was a half decent footballer in those days too!

This site never ceases to amaze me with the names that crop up on here! I remember mentioning Alan Rafferty (RIP) a few years back and that got some reaction.

Football - it' gets in your blood and you just can't let go after all these years! Mind you Jimbo (fos) is slacking...got a business to run...it wouldn't have happened 30-years ago!

I don't recall a Saints fan getting stabbed at Bradford - I remember the Party7 being launched and one hell of a scrap though. Leeds fans out for the day I think - it was cold that day mind you!

West Brom away has to be one of my favourite memories of that glorious Cup run.

Hats off to all those die hards who believed we could win at Villa and went...I wasn't so convinced & and probably without funds so I stayed at home.

Is this going to turn into another Soul Cellar type thread?

Only game I missed was Villa Replay couldn't find anyone else who wanted to go as was too young to drive, went by Car to West Brom, Special Train to Bradford still remember walking up the ground past several pubs with front windows smashed out, Coach to Semi and Car to Final, followed by Plane to Marseilles but thats for another thread.

Bradford City away was horrible.

Crap town, crap journey, crap fans, crap ground, crap game. Overwhelming sense of relief at the end and the hope we would draw Palace in the semis.

Remember sitting in the old main stand (the one that burnt down) about 3 rows back from Richard Dunn (I think that was his name) a Bradford born Heavyweight Boxer (bit limited but could have been British Champion at the time)

He kept yelling out to the Bradford players (Cec Podd their right back in particular) to 'Break the Boogars leg'.. referring to Mike Channon who was causing Bradford quite a few problems with his pace

Saw a old Ford Prefect/Anglia van, hand painted in red & white stripes, driving thro Bradford being chased by a mob of mainly coloured Bradford fans.

Bradford Board trebled the ticket price for the game hence 14,000 ish attendance, the lowest for a Qtr Final tie that century, I think.

Bradford away

Get back to van, no driver

go to cop shop, to find he had been arrested OB would not let us have keys.

Lad was being held until Monday none of us fancied a week end in Bradford so hired a mini cab, guy who took us must have mis understood because he want the five of us to get out at Northampton.

So when he stopped in Oxford for a natural break we took it in turns to sit in car in case he left us.

Got back to Bassett Green Road at 4am, paid the guy his £15 agreed fare, and jumped in our cars to head home.

ESB - surprised I don't know you - very familiar with the first 3 on your list - Noel lives in Thailand now - was with him for NYE out there a couple of years ago.

That would probably depend if you knew Noel from when he came out of the Army and hung around with us Eastleigh lads (he was a Velmore boy) or whether you knew him from later, in the Warrens. We all used the Warrens also but used to start the day in Eastleigh because back then the pubs opened at 10 a.m. in Eastleigh!

Not a Bellemoor boy, went to St. George as we were Roman Candles. Strange coincidence about the names though.

Oh! keep quiet about the Soul Cellar thread or some members will get frightened and tell their Mums and Dads about the ruffians coming out to play!

Is a special commemorative medal being made for those that did go? I feel like I missed out on something very special, my life is not complete anymore. I did listen to the match on the radio, so can I be accepted into your special "Band of Brothers" as a water carrier?

Gotta say, I truly thought for ages that Dunc was the only one that went to all those games (or at least the only one I knew). As it turns out there seems to be more than one could have expected...on here alone. It stands to reason there are also (some 33 and half years on) some dearly departed Saints that went...and then again maybe one out of how many Saints use this site?? 1 in 10? 1 in 30? Who knows.

One thing for sure, not many Saints did the whole thing maybe only 60 or 80 at the very max. A fairly unique group.

Funny thing is, we only took about that many with 'Coombsie's Comandos' to Sheff Utd on Christamas Eve 1973...who went to that??

there is certainly a thread to be had along the lines of

"what is the loneliest you have felt at a Saints game"?

The least I have ever seen was on a Friday Night at Charlton in 1975 (I think). we lost 4-1. I really don't remember seeing any others, although there may have been some somwhere keeping their heads down.

Anyone else at that one?

Sadly on the cup run I saw only Villa home , and the Semi. But being at the semi was enough for me. What a day.

I was at that Charlton game in 75, lots of trouble on train from London Bridge left just after half time and went back to the Hole in the Wall.

Travel to away games in that era was always a bit hit and miss if the heavy mob did not go

Yea I was there TeamSaint, not many Saints there and an intimidating atmosphere in that vast ground.

There are obviously 2 saints fans called Ian Mead. The Ian i know is the one who went to Bellemoor Boys School and had a brother there called Rex. He was a bit of a lad but nowhere like the other namesake mentioned on here. He now lives in Woodlands in semi retirement. I hope this clears this matter up.

The Ian Mead I know is not really a bad lad at all! I was with him at Orient in 76 when he was arrested. The Police were quite confrontational that day, for whatever reason and Ian, by far the biggest of us, was suddenly grabbed for apparently nothing. I was more guilty considering the crap I was singing etc!

If I remember rightly, 3 of us attended Snaresbrook Court in his defence but he was eventually detained for his actions after his arrrest. Actions which we could not witness.

There was a very sad parting of the ways when we realised he was not going to be going to Wembley for the Final.

Had a pint with him in the Otter last night and passed on your regards.

He said he was completely innocent at Orient but had a bit of form and he got 6 months for assaulting a police officer. He served his time somewhere near Ipswich. His Dad told him that it would teach him a few things and indeed it did! Now a grandfather several times over but still large of life and plenty to say for himself. He went to St Georges but got expelled after a couple of years and then went to Toynbee. 4 brothers and 2 sisters, quite an Irish family and still a big Celtic fan to boot.

Anyone remember going to Charlton for an evening gamenaround this time when we lost 6-2 (Ted McDougall made his debut?)

We sat in the old stand and found some Charlton fans sat in our seats. By the time these had been removed we were 2-0 and they sat behind us revelling in our displeasure.

Think we went bottom of the League that evening

Similar feeling to the 7-1 defeat by Watford!!

Ian's Dad was a dockie. Although of Irish extraction I believe the parents were Scottish? Certainly Mrs Mead (a lovely lady R.I.P.) had a Scottish lilt to her voice. Trevor, Teddy & Heather (twins) Ian, Colin & Graham (A.K.A. Rasher) Can't recall the elder sister's name though.

Ian always had this nervous laugh as a kid, and his face would glow. Which quite often would get him in trouble for something even though he was innocent. I remember, on more than one ocassion, all us boys being lined up while the teacher would try to find the perpetrator of some misdemeanour. As he told us what had happened Ian would go red and laugh. Confirming, in the teacher's opinion, Ian's guilt!

Mention of that is infractable I believe !!! Some of our players didn't even know the rules and thought after 90 minutes we had won on away goals at 5-1. No such luck, 30 more minutes of suffering, somehow I forced myself to stay to the end. Luckily I had only to travel back to Uxbridge.

As for the original question I missed 2 games, Villa away as I thought we had no chance and WBA at home which was a real pain but I got blinking well stuck in Portsmouth of all places as I was studying there at the time.

Bradford was indeed a nightmare aside from the result, the idiots let fans in on the day and I remember a mob of Leeds fans turning up and causing a lot of trouble. Oh and walking to the ground was like crossing wasteland !

I was there but luckily travelled up by car with my Dad, Mum and brother and avoided all the trouble but what a dire game it was.

Was this the Friday evening game? Us lot out in that then open end in all the rain! It was my birthday that day and I went with my then girlfriend, Noel Burke and his girlfriend in his little blue 1100. What a way to celebrate your 21st! Should have read the omens really, exactly a year later we got married! (Hull at home, Won 1-0).

I'm very proud that I went to every game in the 76 winning run so please add me to the roll of honour !!

My name is Mike Hatch and I was at school with Ken Gibson at the time. A supporter for 45 years.

As this is my first post I want to recall a memory which I've never seen mentioned on here ....

In the Cup Winners Cup the following season we played Anderlecht at home after losing away 2-0. We scored our second goal at home to lead 2-0 and the Dell was like a cauldron. Straight from the kick-off Anderlecht played the ball forward and it rolled under Jim Steele's foot and they scored. 2-1 with an away goal; game over. I'm convinced we would have gone on to win the game and the Cup if that hadn't happened. Anyone else remember that ???

How could I forget it - gutted was not the word! Mind you Anderlecht away was a classic!

Chanson D'Amour.

I remember the Carrick Rangers away match. Not because I went but it was on radio and I invited Stan Fair Oak (aka Dave Carroll) to come to my Mum and Dad's place to listen to the commentary. It was played in the afternoon for some reason. Anyway he and I drank a whole bottle of galliano (Italian ****tail found in Harvey Wallbangers) and got seriously ****ed. When my Mum came home from work she found the pair of us rolling round the kitchen floor unable to stand. Not amused.

Will say hello to Ken tomorrow for you.

Would you be the Mike Hatch who's dad was the care taker at Shirley Juniors?

If it is you - remember the heady days of Covenanters with old man Wallingford! Blimey we are going back a few years now!

Oh and was it your car that didn't get us to Knebworth?
