Always Saints?

That 'uncrossable divide' has been crossed by a couple of Fair oak residents. One of the Smirk brothers is now a Skate as is Dougie Goodenough who did exactly the same. :smt097

No loss to us though.

As to a second team? I have one and because I'm Catholic you'll all realise that my affection lies north of the border.

Yup! I support the good old Teddy Bears.

trev Smirk a Saints fan? He denies it on The Ugly (despite all the evidence we have). But then he is banned from there now anyway

I was born at St. Mary's .... unfortunately, the hospital down the road....

then I got adopted and ended up in Locks Heath... *****il my parents decided to move to Titchfield Common and a PO postcode !)

7 years old in 1976, so can't really remember - I remember lots of people at school (Park Gate Junior) were "Ipswich fans" because they won the cup a couple of years later...

My children now have the initials SFC so they can't forget !

In a roundabout way, yes. I was born in Scotland. Paisley, home of Saint Mirren, also known up there as the Saints. Parents moved me to Southampton when I was 10, and I've been a "proper" Saint ever since, now more than 40 years.

Never lived in england which meant i was only really exposed to the big four, so for my very young childhood i supported manure as they won the first game i ever saw. My dad on the other hand was a massive saints fan, i remember one day asking him why he would support a team that struggles every year and he asked me in return what would be the point of supporting a team that wins every game because they can out buy ever other club several times over. He told me he supported saints because without money they managed to compete with the big boys and without money and even though they occasionaly lost their fans still would keep singing till the last. I got around to watching a few games with him and saw just how different it was from supporting one of the plastic teams. Haven't looked back since.

In common with a couple of popsters on here I was a Leeds fan at primary school. I even got taken to the Dell to see Saints play Leeds in a cup match. It was a 1-1- draw and I was disappointed because Saints equalised late on. I then took a shine to Villa for a couple of seasons, mainly because I thought Brian Little was a good player. I was converted to Saints in 76 during the cup run when I was about 11 - just the right age to be picking your team for life. I saw the cup final and was taken to the Civic Centre for the victory parade the next day and since then it's been all Saints.

My son started off as a glory hunting Man U fan but I've converted him to Saints and now he's stuck with them for life. After going through the last 3 years as a Saints fan hopefully he's seen the worst of it and can look forward to a brighter future.

I grew up in Bishopstoke and was at secondary school in Eastleigh. My dad had little interest in football (mostly because of being Welsh I guess!), so I didn't have any parental influence. I went to the Dell a few times with mates in the early/mid 70s (my first match was a Texaco Cup match against Rangers, which we won 2-0), but never went regularly. But I wouldn't have dreamed of supporting another team; I just didn't have the real football bug at that time.

One Saturday in 1978 I'd met some friends for a few pints in the Eastleigh Working Men's Club (I was still in the 6th form, but they were all members). A bit after 2pm several of them were getting ready to leave and take the train down to Southampton for the match. I decided to go along, in spite of their view that, as a non-attender, I'd be bad luck. We stood in the Archers Road end (the only time I ever stood there) and Saints duly trounced Blackburn 5-0 - the famous "We hate Bailey!!" match. After that I went to every home game I could for many years, through university in Reading and afterwards, doing a few away matches as well, but eventually lost the habit while living in London and then Newcastle. Now I'm back in god's own county I've been going more, but still not as much as I'd like as I have other commitments on Saturdays.

But, whatever else may happen and however frequently or otherwise I get to St Mary's, I'm a Saints supporter and couldn't ever be anything else. Excellent thread btw.

Yeah i enjoy these posts. Born in West End but moved to NZ but back in time to see us win the cup at the age of 5 and on my dads shoulders for the open top bus the next day. We mobe again at the age of 9 to Sussex. So I've only lived in Southampton for a small part of my life, was brought up by a Plymouth mad Dad who refused to take me to the Dell but took all over the country to see Argyle and I followed Brighton home and way for four seasons for the crack and lager and now exciled in Kent. All through this I've been a Saint and its been great (most of the time).

In my "yoof" just after WW2, I used to watch Cowes at Westwood, but they had several former Saints players. Busby, Rolls, Laney and Lonnen to name a few, so it was a little like supporting Saints. Getting across to the Dell was expensive and amounted to a special day out!

Grew up as a kid in the 80s supporting Liverpool in sunny Warsash. Defining moment was when Poopey got promoted in 87/88. I couldn't stand them, even as a L'pool fan. Bro was a Saint and that season I went to a dozen or so games at the Dell. Best feeling ever to be on the Milton when it got going.

Prob for me now is I have a 3 month old boy, and we live in N London; a stone's throw from Spuds and the Arse. How will I convince him to be a Saint living bang smack in the middle of these two massive clubs??

Brought up just outside Bournemouth - my dad was a Chelsea fan due to living in South London in early 70's despite being brought up in Southampton but fortunately my uncle was Southampton through & through.

Missed 76 and knew nothing about it until a few year later, but taken to watch us play Cardiff in 77 I think, when we won 3-1 and I was hooked. Think my dad was surprised how quickly I got into it as we went to a couple of away games that season - Brighton and that game against Orient!!

Despite living in Coventry & Brighton, I ended up living in Hedge End for 14 years. Sadly had to move to Edinburgh 6 years ago but always try to get back for at least one home game a season and watch us up north when I can.

Wouldn't dream of supporting anyone else. I have mates up here who are Celtic, Rangers, Hibs & Hearts but nothing compares and whilst I'll watch their teams, I couldn't pick one to support. The first game I saw up here was a Hearts v Hibs derby at Tynecastle, midweek under floodlights but it's nothing like the buzz from walking through the turnstiles at SMS (let alone for one of our derby games!!)

When I was a very young thing, I have memories of opening the front window in our house and listening to the roaring and smell of the Saints Speedway bikes from what became the Top Rank Suite and is now a housing estate. I saw the pictures of the men who used to race arnd the track in Red and White stripes, and when Charlie Watts sold up, and I became old enough to go and watch Saints [in 1966-67 season], it was to the football that I attended. It could so easily have been Speedway. I was transfixed by that first game, and have been a fan [distant or otherwise] ever since.

I was Born and Bred in Southampton and neither of my Parents were Football supporters, but when we reached the 1976 FA Cup Final my Mum was quite excited because it was Southampton, the place where she grew up and was pleased to see her home town team on the TV in front of the Nation.

I was only six at the time and remember my Mum ironing while the game was on TV and cheering them on and encouraging me to do the same and be proud as it was 'our' team.

After we Won she also took me to the streets for the home coming to see the players showing off the trophy on the open top bus... my very earliest memories of becoming a Saints fan, I've been a Saints Fan ever since and have never wavered, although it wasn't until '85 I went to The Dell to see a match live for the first time.

Apart from a move away for several months a few years ago before I returned back home to the South I have probably been to at least 75% of home matches since '85 either as a Member getting matchday tickets or as a Season Ticket holder.

I always have been and always will be a Saints supporter and it all started with thanks to my Mum. Although she started my interest and was not really a football supporter herself I took her to her first live game at St Marys a few years ago and she loved it. She now attends games when she can, always looks for Saints results, reads latest news, watches highlights, and can also hold her own in banter with a couple of Pompey supporting fans where she works.

After getting me hooked at a young age from the 76 Cup Final onwards I wonder now what took her so long to catch up!
