rocknrollman no2 Posted 12 September, 2008 Posted 12 September, 2008 I was having a conversation at work today with a driver from Skatesville that regularly visits our company and we got onto the subject of things we liked about where we come from. Now he mentioned their tower and their revamped dockyards and Gunwharf. I mentioned our history and the Bargate and the fact that all of the big liners come to us. But after he had gone it had me thinking. What would be my favourite thing about Southampton? Difficult question. What does everyone think?
bridge too far Posted 12 September, 2008 Posted 12 September, 2008 For me it would have to be all the lovely parks in the city centre. And of course Tudor House has just re-opened. That was one of my favourite places to visit when I was a child.
saint boggy Posted 12 September, 2008 Posted 12 September, 2008 the Tudor House and surrounding area (St Mark's church and the Old Walls).....i feel very proud of my hometown when i'm in that area.
ecuk268 Posted 12 September, 2008 Posted 12 September, 2008 The common for me Same here especially the top end.
Alf Tupper Posted 16 September, 2008 Posted 16 September, 2008 Like you chaps I think the historic sites we have a great although they could be marketed to outsiders a little better. But we do have other worthwhile attractions For instance: I like our ice rink.....Oh Well the bird aviary, lovely to see them....oh The Rose Gardens opposite the civic..ce. ...oh The Speedway Stad.....oh The Pier, a great venue for danc....oh Well, if not the Pier the Top Rank Suite.... Oh There's always a stroll down at Ocean Vill....oh West Quay.....oh no
Master Bates Posted 16 September, 2008 Posted 16 September, 2008 Worried about the guys liking the Common I like the Itchen Bridge, great for entertainment.

bridge too far Posted 16 September, 2008 Posted 16 September, 2008 You forgot the zoo. And the sweet little cricket ground nearby Oh and I nearly forgot the quaint Floating Bridge (how could I forget that - venue for many an assignation in my murky past lol)
hypochondriac Posted 16 September, 2008 Posted 16 September, 2008 Worried about the guys liking the Common I like the Itchen Bridge, great for entertainment. What are you suggesting? I live 2 minutes from it and it's nice to have a wa*k or run round it in the summer.
Ponty Posted 16 September, 2008 Posted 16 September, 2008 It's a sh*t-hole and I don't miss it at all. Still better than Portsmouth though.

swannymere Posted 16 September, 2008 Posted 16 September, 2008 Still better than Portsmouth though. My brother lives in Southsea and i can honestly say that Southampton is lagging behind Portsmouth in civic pride, alot of money has been spent tidying up what used to be a ****hole.
hamster Posted 16 September, 2008 Posted 16 September, 2008 I love the RHM building in the docks - lovely architcture, and quite awesome if ever you get right up close. I was once told that it is the largets bulding in Southampton, can anyone confirm this?
South City Si Posted 17 September, 2008 Posted 17 September, 2008 The Old Town, The city centre parks, Ocean liners, the common. Hopefully we'll see a vast improvement in Southampton over then next few years if all the planned building goes ahead. Go to the Art gallery/library under the stairs to see the 3d plan of So'ton with the planned new additions. The train station is going to look wierd!
Sundance Beast Posted 17 September, 2008 Posted 17 September, 2008 I find the thing that lifts my heart the most is the Basset Avenue north of the Winchester Road roundabout but only when you are travelling north.
Scummer Posted 17 September, 2008 Posted 17 September, 2008 I find the thing that lifts my heart the most is the Basset Avenue north of the Winchester Road roundabout but only when you are travelling north. So the thing you like best about Southampton is leaving it? That figures.......
Ponty Posted 17 September, 2008 Posted 17 September, 2008 My brother lives in Southsea and i can honestly say that Southampton is lagging behind Portsmouth in civic pride, alot of money has been spent tidying up what used to be a ****hole. This may be true but the sh**y Southampton I remember is still better than the even sh**tier Portsmouth I'm trying so hard to forget.
Johnny Shearer Posted 17 September, 2008 Posted 17 September, 2008 I find the thing that lifts my heart the most is the Basset Avenue north of the Winchester Road roundabout but only when you are travelling north. Ah methinks SB is not a true Sotonian.
swannymere Posted 17 September, 2008 Posted 17 September, 2008 This may be true but the sh**y Southampton I remember is still better than the even sh**tier Portsmouth I'm trying so hard to forget. That's the problem, Southampton is still trying to live on fast fading past glories, just like the fans of SFC. Wether you like it or not Pompey is cleaner, tidier, it just looks like someone has been arsed to clean and paint the things that our city used to.
Dicko Posted 17 September, 2008 Posted 17 September, 2008 I love Southampton's diversity. You can drive along the waterfront and see cruise liners and the idyllic Ocean Village. Within 2 minutes, you're driving down Empress Road with a selection of beauties to choose from
Scummer Posted 17 September, 2008 Posted 17 September, 2008 Whether you like it or not Pompey is cleaner, tidier, it just looks like someone has been arsed to clean and paint the things that our city used to. I can only assume that you guys only ever go to Gunwharf when you visit Portsmouth.
swannymere Posted 17 September, 2008 Posted 17 September, 2008 Don't go to Gunwharf unless i'm going to brothers work in which case i use the deliveries entrance.
Redbul Posted 18 September, 2008 Posted 18 September, 2008 The Common and the Sports Centre. They were my playgrounds as a nipper.
Thedelldays Posted 18 September, 2008 Posted 18 September, 2008 southampton is an urban jungle with the sprinkling of grass...it has nt much else to offer for fun and relaxation that immediately springs to mind.. what a dull place.
Toomer Posted 18 September, 2008 Posted 18 September, 2008 I find the thing that lifts my heart the most is the Basset Avenue north of the Winchester Road roundabout but only when you are travelling north. I would have thought it would have been when travelling east.
Johnny Shearer Posted 18 September, 2008 Posted 18 September, 2008 southampton is an urban jungle with the sprinkling of grass...it has nt much else to offer for fun and relaxation that immediately springs to mind.. what a dull place. Marwell Zoo! And I'm all out.
Hatch Posted 18 September, 2008 Posted 18 September, 2008 And the sweet little cricket ground nearby and the sweet little football ground near that... :smt089
