View From The Top Posted 7 November, 2009 Share Posted 7 November, 2009 Jerusalem. Brings tears to my eyes when sung. I'm lucky enough to have been at Anfield for a few big European nights due to freebies and when they belt out YNWA it's quite a sight/sound. I'm also of the age that whenever I hear Nessum Dorma I automatically think of Italia '90.
Wiltshire Saint Posted 7 November, 2009 Share Posted 7 November, 2009 Kongesangen - now that's how an anthem should sound. We could learn something from the Norweigans. Other "anthems" that make my hairs literally stand on end include: Michael Jackson - "Earthsong". I remember first time I heard this song, it made me stop and think about what we are doing to the world. A real epiphany moment. It was after hearing this song that I decided to do whatever I could to help the planet, so I now take showers instead of baths and turn my TV off properly, not leave it on standby. Mariah Carey - "Vision of love". Amazing, the way her high pitched voice sounds sends me delirious, like being spoken to by God. Elton John - "Candle in the wind". What can you say? Everyone gets erect hairs at the thought of our Queen of Hearts (Princess Di, RIP). Starship - "We built this city". Inspirational. Thiss song reminds me that money isn't everything in life. These people uilt a city on rock ad roll......so why not build a city based on love and equality and justice and peace? Magical moments listening to that song. Phil Collins - "Another day in paradise". Phil gets home to us what it's like ebing homeless so well with this song that it makes the hairs on my neck stand up as I feel like I am homeless for the duration of the song. It's like 4 and a half minutes of feeling the despair, hopelessness and worthlessness of a homeless person. Sheer genius.

Atticus Finch of Maycomb Posted 7 November, 2009 Share Posted 7 November, 2009 To Witshires list I would add: The Black Eye Peas - "Where is the Love". Makes me wonder where the love is. Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder - "Ebony and Ivory". Makes me take the issue of race seriously. The Manic Street Preachers - "If You Tolerate This, Then Your Children Will Be Next". Really makes me think about how shooting fascists is akin to shooting rabbits. The Killers - "Human". Are we human? Or are we dancer? Does anyone know? Really, does anyone know? Any U2 song. Bocelli is Tuscany's most famous son etc and it was pretty special driving through that beautiful place and listening to his songs. I usually hate that crap, but in that particular time and place, it was perfectly suited.

badgerx16 Posted 7 November, 2009 Share Posted 7 November, 2009 Jerusalem, as played by one of the top Championship brass bands. Listen to the version on the Brassed Off soundtrack. If not that, then any good hymn tune in the same genre. As a republican I cannot abide GSTQ, as a national anthem consider the cheese eating surrenders monkeys' choice, the Marseillaise is a truly rousing tune. As for Land of Dope and Tories or Rule Britannia, absolute jingoistic, blue rinse, tripe. Why can't the English find something to match Land of my Fathers ? As for something that 'moves' me, the theme from Schindler's List or the Elgar cello concerto, the version recorded by Jaqueline DuPre. Or my daughter playing flugel on Peter Graham's brass band arrangement of Away In a Manger.

badgerx16 Posted 7 November, 2009 Share Posted 7 November, 2009 (edited) so basically, you dont like things traditionally english/british.. fair enough Take a look at who wrote Jerusalem, and what it's about. Also, Elgar was English, as is Peter Graham. And last time I looked, Wales was in Britain. My wife has suggested that maybe I should have considered something by Gustav Holst or Frederic Delius,....wonder where they came from ? badgerx16 Posted 7 November, 2009 Share Posted 7 November, 2009 so basically, you dont like things traditionally english/british.. fair enough God Save the King was written to rally support for ( the German ) George II during Bonny Prince Charlie's march on London in 1745. It was not adopted as the national anthem until the Napoleonic wars. The words to Rule Britannia were written by a Scot. And Land of Hope and Glory, is actually to a tune by Elgar, ( see your comment ). My major objection to it is it's being hijacked by the Tories. Nineteen Canteen Posted 7 November, 2009 Share Posted 7 November, 2009 (edited) abide with me I think this song is very emotional and for me is more 'lump in the throat' than hairs stand on end but nonetheless a great choice. Similarly, 'The Lark Ascending' by Vaughan Williams I find moving and the Hymn,'I Vow to Thee My Country'. When I married my wife many moons ago we were lucky to have an internationally renowned organist play at our wedding who liked to use the organ in our local church. He agreed to play us out to Widor's 'Toccata' and played by an expert it is without equal. The occassion sense of pride and that music thumping through your chest was the happiest and proudest moment of my life and the fact, even now, when I think about that time, the hairs begin to tingle it must be testament to the music and perhaps of course the momemt. Mind you the congregation hung around and didn't leave until the piece was finished and then gave him a standing ovation whilst we stood outside on our own with the photographer. It was a fantastic moment and being ignornat had no idea just how good this bloke was, an amazing talent but very ordinary man. BTW - contemporary wise - Great Gig in the Sky - Pink Floyd, Fake Plastic Trees - Radiohead - The Drugs Don't Work - Verve and finally Womans Work - Kate Bush. Not anthems maybe but songs that make your hairs stand on end or move you to your core even in your darkest moments.
