Saint Stimp Posted 7 November, 2009 Share Posted 7 November, 2009 You don't do yourself any favours do you? You can't complain about people being hypercritical of your opinions if that's how you react to people. Very much agree... Alpine get your head out of your ass. Maybe.. just maybe.. there is someone out there who didn't realise this fact. Maybe this forum doesn't revolve around you.

Torrent Of Abuse Posted 7 November, 2009 Share Posted 7 November, 2009 I believe me and you were the ones preaching about our potential to do well this season while everyone around us told us time after time (after time) that we were being unrealistic and this is just a re-building season. do we get any praise for being right? noooooooooo shame we were so poor 1st ten games..... It's all about perspectives. Many people see the last seven games as vindication of the view that Pardew was getting things right and that it was always going to take 10 games to get results going our way (and that maybe we shouldn't have been doubting Pardew's ability after a handful of games). Different people. Different viewpoints.
Andy_Porter Posted 7 November, 2009 Share Posted 7 November, 2009 I've enjoyed the last month or so of football more than any other period I can remember for a long time. Still think we could do with a centre back who can pass a bit and another central midfielder in January to really complete the squad.

JustMike Posted 7 November, 2009 Share Posted 7 November, 2009 Of course not. But the average Saints fan can count and knows the results we're getting. NickG seems to feel the need to state the bleedin obvious after every game. We're not stupid, he's not the only one to spot the run, and its getting tedious. and yet its ok for you to state the bleedin obvious when we lose
dubai_phil Posted 7 November, 2009 Share Posted 7 November, 2009 Quite. Any news from the pontificating patronising "reality checkers" telling us what a fantastic achievement it would be just to stay up this season? Let's see whose reality is more accurate come season end shall we? I wonder if we're allowed to say we're a bigger club than Yeovil Town yet? Or that still too "arrogant". Just staying up this season will be a fantastic achievement..... When viewed from a historical perspective back in mid May... It will still be a fantastic achievement when viewed after the results in the first few weeks. Getting into the playoffs will be an astonishing achievement, in fact winning it and getting back into the CCC first time around would count as one of the great feats in modern English football. What IS really important is that we are finally seeing that supporting a football team CAN be fun again. AND we can dream, we can hope or we can even expect that this can keep going and going and going.
Legod Third Coming Posted 7 November, 2009 Share Posted 7 November, 2009 More to the point Nick, isn't it great to see: 1. PACE 2. Confidence 3. Belief. All three have been missing for so long. Last night's goals showed quick intelligent football thinking. It's probably always been there in some of the players but it's taken decent management to realise it. And then there are the quality players we have been allowed to bring in - at last!!!!

St Will Posted 7 November, 2009 Share Posted 7 November, 2009 I don't need to say a word, I don't think I'm the only one who is finding Alpine "Victor Meldrew" Saint's attitude starting to get grating. I've never seen so much negativity from anyone. I grew up with negative parents, and they are like Tony Robbins compared to Alpine.
St Will Posted 7 November, 2009 Share Posted 7 November, 2009 By the way, I put it to Mark Bright on Twitter......I asked him if we could make the playoffs. His answer was: "it'll be tough having started from -10, but making up the 12 points is doable". He wished his old team mate Alan Pardew good luck before the game last night too. But wasn't really bothered about the Torquay game to be honest, just a bit of a bonus to get through on pens and start the Wembley march! There's no FA Cup 2nd Round tie that's not winnable, and if we can get past Charlton this week things will be getting interesting on the Cup front. I think I know what you mean, but for a team which regularly scores 3 it's a bit odd to read criticism that they can't grind out a no-score draw. We're suddenly back to the kind of football we played with Channon and Keegan: "So they'll score 3? Who cares, we'll score 4!" It's a bit nervy after what we've been through, and I must admit I would feel a little bit more secure if we could shut up shop a bit better. AP seems to think the same thing, but since we started out as a team who couldn't score at all I'm sure he knows what he's doing.

I'd suggest that philosophy while entertaining is unlikely to get you very far in the long term - Kevin Keegan's (trophy-less) reign at Newcastle being a good illustration of the point . Successful teams are nearly always built on the foundation of a solid defence .

Successful teams are nearly always built on the foundation of a solid defence . Ah, the popular Keegan only attacked misconception. Newcastle conceded 37 goals when they finished second to Manchester United, second only to United's 35. They scored 66 to United's 73. The following season Newcastle conceded 40 goals to United's 44 - again finishing second and first respectively. I say this not to pick on your point (becasue I do agree with you) but because I am a Champion of Kevin Keegan who is totally maligned in this regard that he was an all out attacking manager. Yes, his teams played attractive football. That was not, however, at the expense of a tight defence.

Complacency is all we have to fear this season, because we have the manager and more importantly the quality of players to fear absolutely noone. We might lose through bad luck. But we should not be outplayed unless we don't turn up. However, to take turning up for granted is the first sign of complacency. I have said it before, I will say it now. January isnt that far away... I think we will buy both. Trottman is a good player but bear in mind Thomas did an equally good job against Bristol Rovers - the goals were nothing to do with him. Antonio looks like he is surplus to requirements at Reading. Rogers must be driving their fans to distraction. They can't score, can't win at home and he loans out a bloke who makes one and scores one and has pace to burn, oh and a good first touch... While I understand your concerns, the reality is you'd never heard of Trottman or Antonio before they rocked up at our place so I have every faith the management are on top of this situation. Especially, when you consider that they are aiming for promotion. Why would they do anything to undermine this???
