Eastcowzer Posted 7 November, 2009 Posted 7 November, 2009 As the parent club, i.e. Preston N.E. refused Saints permission to have the player 'cup-tied', does this mean that he will definitely return to Preston at the end of the loan period, with no chance of him being signed. ?. I'd like to think otherwise, as he plays well with Rahdi Jaidi as the best pair of centre backs we've had since Watson and Nicholl.
CHAPEL END CHARLIE Posted 7 November, 2009 Posted 7 November, 2009 .......I'd like to think otherwise, as he plays well with Rahdi Jaidi as the best pair of centre backs we've had since Watson and Nicholl. You think they are a better pairing than Lundekvam and Svensson in their prime ?
saintbletch Posted 7 November, 2009 Posted 7 November, 2009 A little over-dramatic from the OP in my opinion. I think we have to assume that Pardew is not an idiot which means that it wasn't a mistake or an oversight playing Gobern at left back. Instead there must have been some other purpose in it. Others have said that Gobern has played in similar positions in the reserves so it appears to spin the situation a different way, Pardew saw something in Gobern that made him believe he could be a good left of right back. At 3-0 and apparently going on to win in a 'cup game, Pardew thought he'd try out his theory and give Gobern a run out for the first team. I suspect he may well have learned a lot from putting Gobern at left back and we didn't lose. So Pardew got what he wanted. He learned about Gobern and we went on to win. So was that a mistake on Pardew's part? A risk definitely, but a mistake? I'm not sure. In fact you could say it was perfectly judged. I'd rather we had gone out to Bristol in the 'cup than for Pardew to think that Gobern could cover Harding, because I think we've learned that he can't.
Legod Third Coming Posted 7 November, 2009 Posted 7 November, 2009 That's fair enough. I'm just making the point that it was a massive mistake. Only if Pardew learned nothing from it. If we went through a season and only ever got things right, what would we have learned about the players, the squad, the areas for improvement. To be fair to Pardew, he can't also know that Gobern will come on and play like a tart. I am not a left back but even I know: 1. taking out a bloke at ankle height is a free kick 2, you don't swap shirts with someone in the box until AFTER the game. The kid played like a d!ck! So hopefully, he learned and the manager learned.

Pardew did make a mistake, I could see that from the juddery coverage through the internet tellie, but like you said, he will know not to give Gobern that opportunity at left back again, and will keep him in midfield. However I find it amazing, especially from 19C's post, how one can deduce from this win that we don't care about the cup. It didn't look like that when the players were celebrating those THREE goals we scored, and I'm pretty sure, looking at the starting line up, we played a team to win the game. It was our strongest available team. The mind boggles. Edited 7 November, 2009 by St Will
Kingsbridge Saint Posted 7 November, 2009 Posted 7 November, 2009 This thread is about Gobern. One of our illustrious line up from last season. Enough said. Time for him to move on along with the rest of last season's losers still hanging around at SMS. With a few exceptions you can count on the fingers of one hand.
Rory Posted 7 November, 2009 Posted 7 November, 2009 That comment made me go and look: OUCH..! I remember thinking at the time, why on earth did we let Paul Rideout go..? Probably the best header of a ball since Ron Davies. Stuart Barlow tore us apart that night when he came on. Also, Kevin Gibbens was awful that night, as was Bleidelis. Probably brought an end to both of their Saints careers.
