Saint_clark Posted 6 November, 2009 Posted 6 November, 2009 But i'll say it again. It was a massive mistake putting Gobern at LB. He is a CM, and let his man go for their first goal; not to mention giving away a blatant penalty for their second. Mills was on the bench so why not just stick him there in the first place? Made no sense. On the upside, Antonio looked absolutely fantastic. We really have to try our hardest to sign him up. Connolly has 4 in 5 (?) now and is proving what a great signing he is. Onwards and upwards, but I hope Gobern is never played at LB again.
S-Clarke Posted 6 November, 2009 Posted 6 November, 2009 good to learn a lesson and still win though. i'm confident pard's will never try that again.
NickG Posted 6 November, 2009 Posted 6 November, 2009 maybe Pardew doesn't see him as CM, has played in other roles in training and wanted to see him in game - when 2 up thinking he would do a job?
Saint_clark Posted 6 November, 2009 Author Posted 6 November, 2009 maybe Pardew doesn't see him as CM, has played in other roles in training and wanted to see him in game - when 2 up thinking he would do a job? That's fair enough. I'm just making the point that it was a massive mistake.
4737_carlin Posted 6 November, 2009 Posted 6 November, 2009 Gorbern is nothing special as he would be still at Mk dons if that was the case.
Anders Posted 6 November, 2009 Posted 6 November, 2009 I think Gobern played LB for MK Dons when he was on loan there
alpine_saint Posted 6 November, 2009 Posted 6 November, 2009 We have a good first choice defensive line-up, and no depth whatsoever. We were home high-and-dry until Pardew changed the defence. For that reason, and the Orient game, I consider our defence to be fragile and requiring further work.
lordswoodsaints Posted 6 November, 2009 Posted 6 November, 2009 I can't see the attraction of gobern full stop, wherever he plays. Bambi on ice IMO.

John B Posted 6 November, 2009 Posted 6 November, 2009 We have a good first choice defensive line-up, and no depth whatsoever. Yes very true especially at LB
Saint_clark Posted 6 November, 2009 Author Posted 6 November, 2009 I can't see the attraction of gobern full stop, wherever he plays. Bambi on ice IMO. I think he has potential, but as a CM, not on the wing.
krissyboy31 Posted 6 November, 2009 Posted 6 November, 2009 I think Gobern played LB for MK Dons when he was on loan there Actually played right back one game for them.
notnowcato Posted 6 November, 2009 Posted 6 November, 2009 Gobern filled in at LB in the ressies last game. It wasn't a massive mistake as the consequences were minimal. Still, lets focus on the negative.
harvey Posted 6 November, 2009 Posted 6 November, 2009 Tbh that's what I thought as soon as he was bought on.....I was like this
saint lard Posted 6 November, 2009 Posted 6 November, 2009 I think pards realised his mistake and tried to rectify it as soon as it was obvious he was not suited to that position.i maybe wrong.
Saint_clark Posted 6 November, 2009 Author Posted 6 November, 2009 Gobern filled in at LB in the ressies last game. It wasn't a massive mistake as the consequences were minimal. Still, lets focus on the negative. Surely if we are going to learn and improve we HAVE to focus on the negatives? I did balance my post out by saying what was promising.
equalizer Posted 6 November, 2009 Posted 6 November, 2009 That penalty was ********, if a ref gave a penalty for that everytime there would be 20 penalties per match, imo.
NickG Posted 6 November, 2009 Posted 6 November, 2009 CB Jaidi Trottman Thomas Perry Lancashire new lad? RB Murty Thomas James Perry LB Harding Mills Molyneux Not bad for 3rd division!
harvey Posted 6 November, 2009 Posted 6 November, 2009 Gobern filled in at LB in the ressies last game. It wasn't a massive mistake as the consequences were minimal. Still, lets focus on the negative. "The consequences were minimal"...but could have been fateful.
John Boy Saint Posted 6 November, 2009 Posted 6 November, 2009 Come on we won, the lad came in after not too many starts to be honest on the site I watching it was a generous penalty from the ref. Just rejoice that we are a a match closer to the lucrative 3rd round :-)
Saint_clark Posted 6 November, 2009 Author Posted 6 November, 2009 That penalty was ********, if a ref gave a penalty for that everytime there would be 20 penalties per match, imo. Don't be so silly, it was blatant. He had his arms around his chest and he hauled him backwards.
Leicestersaint Posted 6 November, 2009 Posted 6 November, 2009 That penalty was ********, if a ref gave a penalty for that everytime there would be 20 penalties per match, imo. yes I agree - harsh. Let'slook at all the positives tonight. I think the side have a great team spirit.
eelpie Posted 6 November, 2009 Posted 6 November, 2009 Gobern filled in at LB in the ressies last game. It wasn't a massive mistake as the consequences were minimal. . And apparently was man of the match according to Henderson. But this cup tie was a high profile match too early for him, as it turned out.
Leicestersaint Posted 6 November, 2009 Posted 6 November, 2009 Don't be so silly, it was blatant. He had his arms around his chest and he hauled him backwards. Actually, having watched the replays several times on Justin tv, it looked like 6 of one and half a dozen of the other. Their player actually had his arms behind him but round Gobern's body while he backed into Gobern and then deliberately tumbled over. I think the referee (and you) were conned!
equalizer Posted 6 November, 2009 Posted 6 November, 2009 Don't be so silly, it was blatant. He had his arms around his chest and he hauled him backwards. You must of been watching a different game then, because that happens all the time from set pieces and there was minimal contact and the Rovers player collapsed like a house of cards!
notnowcato Posted 6 November, 2009 Posted 6 November, 2009 Surely if we are going to learn and improve we HAVE to focus on the negatives? I did balance my post out by saying what was promising. It wasnt a massive mistake. We are short of left back cover, why not see if Oscar csn be that cover, clearly he can't.
notnowcato Posted 6 November, 2009 Posted 6 November, 2009 "The consequences were minimal"...but could have been fateful. As could have leaving Harding on, either for him to aggravate a knock or to pick up nother yellow.
Saint_clark Posted 6 November, 2009 Author Posted 6 November, 2009 As could have leaving Harding on, either for him to aggravate a knock or to pick up nother yellow. What's wrong with bringing Mills on then?
notnowcato Posted 6 November, 2009 Posted 6 November, 2009 What's wrong with bringing Mills on then? Read the report from the last ressies game. Oscar filed in at LB and received good reports.

I originally thought that but from another angle it did look a penalty but no need to say the kid should never play there again after playing only a few minutes

St Chalet Posted 6 November, 2009 Posted 6 November, 2009 CB Jaidi Trottman Thomas Perry Lancashire new lad? RB Murty Thomas James Perry LB Harding Mills Molyneux Not bad for 3rd division! ahhhh, some perspective!
krissyboy31 Posted 6 November, 2009 Posted 6 November, 2009 Read the report from the last ressies game. Oscar filed in at LB and received good reports. Bristol Rovers first team is a bit different from Forest Green Rovers reserves though (apart from they both being called Rovers and both from Gloucestershire).
alpine_saint Posted 6 November, 2009 Posted 6 November, 2009 "The consequences were minimal"...but could have been fateful. Exactly, its not like we dont have record for going 2 or 3 up and blowing it, is it ?
Under Weststand Posted 6 November, 2009 Posted 6 November, 2009 What's wrong with bringing Mills on then? Agree even after they had scored due to a mistake by Gobern AP brought Mills on & left Gobern at the back, why did he not switch the pair Mills to LB & Gobern out on the wing? But he was left at LB to cause even more problems giving away a Penalty( it was definitely a pen IMHO). We won just, thanks to some shoddy finishing by Rovers thankfully. I'm sure that AP will do just the same as we're doing analysing the performance . AP cannot be happy we can't keep a clean sheet.
CHAPEL END CHARLIE Posted 6 November, 2009 Posted 6 November, 2009 That penalty was ********, if a ref gave a penalty for that everytime there would be 20 penalties per match, imo. Gobern was all over him like a cheap suit - the ref had no choice but to give it .
what the! Posted 6 November, 2009 Posted 6 November, 2009 tonights defence wasn't the first choice anyway. Imo murty would play if fit and also trotman(cup tied). we have perry. molyneux and fish can play at the back so i think we are pretty well covered. maybe harding had a niggle so gave him a rest
jam Posted 6 November, 2009 Posted 6 November, 2009 Exactly, its not like we dont have record for going 2 or 3 up and blowing it, is it ? We know that. But these fancy managers come in and think that at 3 goals up the game is safe. I still remember the look on Hoddle's face after the Tranmere game, I think he was in shock...
St Landrew Posted 6 November, 2009 Posted 6 November, 2009 Ok, ok Saint Clark. You've made your point. I take it you're still pleased with the win though. Earlier you said you were one of the more optimistic posters on here, but on the evidence of this evening, I beg to doubt it, ever so slightly. However, as mentioned before, point taken.
Justin C Posted 6 November, 2009 Posted 6 November, 2009 If we cant try different things when we are winning well in a cup that is not our priority when will we learn. Hopefully we did learn from today.

I still remember the look on Hoddle's face after the Tranmere game, I think he was in shock... That comment made me go and look: OUCH..! I remember thinking at the time, why on earth did we let Paul Rideout go..? Probably the best header of a ball since Ron Davies.
barney Posted 6 November, 2009 Posted 6 November, 2009 The 1st goal was down to antonio losing the ball in midfield though that aside he had a good game. The second was never a penalty.Onwards + upwards another win lets concentrate on the plusses of which there were many.

Onwards and upwards, but I hope Gobern is never played at LB again. Massive mistake playing Gobern full stop IMO. All I can say not having seen him play this season he must be showing Pardew a lot more than he showed in teh games i saw him play last season when he generally made Carlton Palmer look co-ordinated. Tonights game can be summed in 3 phases: 1) I don't think our heart is really in it the Cup and it would be a disaster to go on a cup run and key players get injured so we fail to avoid relegation comfortably. I think that showed in the first half listening to Solent and regardless of the obvious fan friendly rhetoric from Pardew. 2) Dodgy start to the 2nd half and a player of real class at this level kills the game and then Antonio (no need to start with Papa again IMO) puts it beyond doubt... 3) Cruise and switch off mode and nearly get caught with our pants down and the nightmares of Leeds and Tranmere loomed large. Oh and can we stop pretending that Lloyd James can deliver crosses and take corners. Merrington sounded less than complimentary about his crosses tonight and apart from the MK Dons game where he put in an assist I should think his ratio is something like 1 in 10. We need an acknowledged RB to match harding on the left as Thomas isn't the solution either IMO. Good to be in the hat for the next round but I dread the likes of Connolly, Antonio, Lambert, Lallana, Jaidi, Schneiderlin, Hammond, Davis and Harding getting bad injuries. 1 we could cope with but 2 or 3 and it starts to look a problem, we have a big squad but not many you would be happy to see come in and replace these players. Lets give Charlton a bye next week!

At 3-1 what was their glaring miss like? Merrington on the radio said he couldn't believe the player didn't score but i accept he is occassionally prone to the odd exaggeration although he is an institution and I wouldn't want anyone else.

Earlier you said you were one of the more optimistic posters on here, but on the evidence of this evening, I beg to doubt it, ever so slightly. However, as mentioned before, point taken. Whitey Grandad Posted 7 November, 2009 Posted 7 November, 2009 At 3-1 what was their glaring miss like? Merrington on the radio said he couldn't believe the player didn't score but i accept he is occassionally prone to the odd exaggeration although he is an institution and I wouldn't want anyone else. Bearing in mind that I was sitting in the next to bottom row behind their goal and with a scaffold pole, drainpipe and goalkeeper blocking my view, I couldn't believe that he missed it either. There was a shot from their right across goal that Kelvin palmed out to the left-hand side on the penalty area. It fell straight to one of their players on the edge of the box and the goal was unguarded. He hit it first time, high, wide and handsome a few yards to the right of the goal. If they had scored it then the last 10 minutes would have been interesting.
Ekelund24 Posted 7 November, 2009 Posted 7 November, 2009 Connolly has 4 in 5 (?) now and is proving what a great signing he is. Technically his record is played 1 (3 sub) scored 4 which means he scores every 22.5 mins at best, at worst 1 every 90 mins!! Looked good tonight, as did Antonio. I thought on the t'internet we looked good in the first half, quality in the second
Saints foreva Posted 7 November, 2009 Posted 7 November, 2009 My biggest concern tonight was Lloyd James. He is a very poor defender and was one of the main reasons why we played very poor. Anytime he got the ball, even when Antonio was in space he seemed obsessed with knocking it up high for Lambert. After tonight, I think Wayne Thomas should go back to right back as I thought he did a very good job and doesn't deserved to be dropped.
