Pancake Posted 4 November, 2009 Posted 4 November, 2009 The Sportsdirect.com @ St James' Park Stadium. I **** you not. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/n/newcastle_united/8342406.stm Its like some crazy mixed up email address.
RedAndWhite91 Posted 4 November, 2009 Posted 4 November, 2009 Hahahahaha that's the worst stadium name ever.
Hatch Posted 4 November, 2009 Posted 4 November, 2009 I don't understand why everyone gets so upset about rebranding stadiums. To the people that care, it will always be St James Park, no matter what other tags are attached to it. Just take the money and be done with it. St Marys could be called 'John Westwood is my lover stadium' for all the difference it makes to me.
stevegrant Posted 4 November, 2009 Posted 4 November, 2009 They'll be embarking on another boycoutt...
bungle Posted 4 November, 2009 Posted 4 November, 2009 Agree with Hatch to an extent. I don't like it when the old traditional stadiums lose their names, but for the current crop of soulless bowls with no history, what does it matter? There are some great stadium names in the US, perhaps my favourite being "Heinz Field" in Pittsburgh. In the same way, had they done that to the old Three Rivers Stadium I would have been livid, in the same way that Candlestick Park became 3com Park, and then Monster.com Park, but luckily now is Candlestick again. Not sure how to feel about Newcastle, because it was an old ground, but has been redeveloped into a boring modern bowl. Edit: Just realised they have a stadium name like this in the States: "Invesco Field @ Mile High".
Deppo Posted 4 November, 2009 Posted 4 November, 2009 My favourite stadium name is The Dripping Pan. I also agree with Hatch, people will still just call it St James Park.
norwaysaint Posted 4 November, 2009 Posted 4 November, 2009 I still call ours The Friends Provident stadium. It just kind of stuck.
AndyNorthernSaints Posted 4 November, 2009 Posted 4 November, 2009 They should have named it "The Sid James stadium"
Gigersaint Posted 4 November, 2009 Posted 4 November, 2009 I was happy to see to the "Friends Provident" naming of our stadium dropped. It's far better seeing SOUTHAMPTON FOOTBALL CLUB - ST MARY'S STADIUM in big red letters on the front of the Main Itchen Stand rather than as yet another advertising outlet for the sponsor and our stadium name becoming secondary to it.

Sadly that never appeared, however metaphorically speaking, he did end up cutting his own throat though...

St Mary's was a new stadium and if naming rights were to be awarded then it should have been The Friends Provident Stadium or whoever (like the Reebok or Emirates) and we wouldn't even have given it a second thought. Changing a traditional stadium such as St James' Park is a different kettle of fish and I think if I was a Geordie, I'd be disappointed and somewhat angry at that (especially the stupid name Ashley is proposing).
RonManager Posted 8 November, 2009 Posted 8 November, 2009 I think if I was a Geordie, I'd be disappointed and somewhat angry at that (especially the stupid name Ashley is proposing). If I was a Geordie, I'd say stuff like 'howay canny lad, man, woman, man an' sh1te' like ya knaa.
Arizona Posted 8 November, 2009 Posted 8 November, 2009 You can imagine what the email address is for the stadium's head of corporate events: Fred.Smith@S portsdirect.com@StJamesPark Stadium.corporate.co.uk
