Go to pub and watch:

Paulton v Norwich

England v Australia (rugby union)

England v New Zealand (rugby league)

Valuev v Haye

Breeders Cup Classic

By the time you have drunk through those 5 events, you won't have any idea where you are.

There is a club, near the Nestle tower where you could land a teenage tart. HTH.

The Blue Orchid or Joe Banana's? Both are dire! The Whitgift Centre is a reasonable shopping centre (but nothing there you wouldn't find in Southampton).

Tend to agree with others on here, it's not the best place (and seriously, keep an eye out, there are some very dodgy characters about). When I lived there we mainly went up to Clapham Junction or into town for nights out.

Seems a shame to hear such criticism of good ol Croydon. But it does at least have 24 hour trains from London which makes it great! Also South Croydon is quite nice sometimes. West Croydon's a bit rough. Thornton Heath is a bit stabby. But mind you, shooting goes on pretty much everywhere. All in all - a great place to live!

Sometimes we need to dig a little deeper than "where's the nearest Wetherspoons"? and as for Ikea, although I do personally quite like some of their furniture items, they have made a beautiful relic of our heritage look cheap and nasty. Can you imagine the outcry if they did that to battersea Power Station?

A very nice yet modest building still exists on the main road through. I say modest, that is if you ignore the great big De Havilland Heron sat next to it. It is a very nice building though compared to some of the ugly carbunkles that they erect nowadays.

I live in the London borough of Croydon. Stay the **** away. That is the best advice I can give you.

Ha! But parts are OK? We lived in South Croydon - opposite the Whitgift school and never had any bother. Coulsden is OK too and it's convenient for London? When I lived there I was in my late 20's/early 30's and a lot more of a ****y bar-steward than I am now - I'd have strong doubts about going back now...

We lived on a council estate in Whiteley Crescent. I went to Holne Chase Primary School and my old man worked at Bletchley Park. We left when I was 9 in 1963 as he got posted to Singapore.

I don't have PM so sorry to nick this thread!

I think Bletchley was ALL council estates, wasn't it? For the London spill-over - I remember my mum telling me loads of stories of London "gangsters" stashing stuff with locals...

I don't remember Whitely Crescent (mind I was 7 when we left in 1974 to live in Lisbon), we lived in Surrey Place and I went to Wellsmead and was due to go to Denbigh (sp?). My Step-dad worked at the OU. It was a great place to grow up because it was basically a huge building site in the late '60's... It must have been just fields when you were there? Bletchley Park? Was your old man in Intelligence?

I live in Kenley/Purley if you know the area. I wonder why the area near Whitgift School is okay.. It's pretty much the best private school in the country.

Griff - wouldn't argue about Whitgift School - I didn't know anyone who went there but the grounds/facilities looked fantastic - a bit of a step-up from my own alma mater, Merry Oak.. Purley is OK as well, though, isn't it?

I spent many hours on the Purley Way (in traffic jams) on my way to Sainsbury's, Ikea, all the places mentioned above, including the old airport (wasn't there a TFI Friday's, next door?).

I have to say I enjoyed my time living in Croydon, there were a couple of decent pubs and restaurants about, but you really had to be local - as someone mentioned, a wrong turn and you are in West Croydon or Thornton Heath and you could come across a whole world of problems... I guess the whole of South London is like that though? I had good mates in Brixton and Balham which both had terrible reputations back in the day, but I had some great nights out there...

Wonder how Hatch got on - is he still alive?!

Well, I live in South Croydon and it's okay, compared to the rest of Croydon. True, if I had the choice I'd live somewhere else. There are plenty of bars and stuff in Croydon but it is almost as chavvy as people say, and definitely quite gangstery around West Croydon. The best thing about it is East Croydon station, which quickly gets you somewhere else.

Where specifically do you live?

Amsterdam, there is still a TGI Fridays next to Airport Hotel, has been there for years!
