the stain Posted 12 September, 2008 Posted 12 September, 2008 Does anybody else do this? It seems to me to be the only way to nullify the tedium of the same half-hour walk to work every day. People used to look at me strangely but I've noticed that a couple of people who I regularly pass going the opposite way now read as they go along too. I'm thinking of inviting them to join a book club. n.b. I've never yet trodden in any poop.
TopGun Posted 12 September, 2008 Posted 12 September, 2008 I prefer to read a book whilst driving. It's therapeutic on busy motorways.
Scudamore Posted 12 September, 2008 Posted 12 September, 2008 I have read whilst walking...not a book though...
St Landrew Posted 12 September, 2008 Posted 12 September, 2008 I see no problem with it, as long as people notice they're about to bump into people coming the other way. A head down attitude doesn't give anyone the right to go barging through unannounced. Just a few months back I was driving on the main road through the University campus. I'd just got near the Nuffield Theatre when this student just walked out into the road, head down and texting away. I had to brake fairly hard and instantly decided I would get the car quite close when it eventually stopped. This made her pop her head up. I wound down the window and said, am I in charge of your life or you..?
the stain Posted 12 September, 2008 Author Posted 12 September, 2008 Peripheral vision is enough to warn you that someone's about. And I still look both ways before crossing the road (I used to be a member of the Tufty Club...)
the stain Posted 12 September, 2008 Author Posted 12 September, 2008 And I like it when pretty ladies try to check out what I'm reading. It makes me feel like they desire me.
dubai_phil Posted 12 September, 2008 Posted 12 September, 2008 A small suggestion.... iPod & talking books?
Guest Dark Sotonic Mills Posted 12 September, 2008 Posted 12 September, 2008 And I like it when pretty ladies try to check out what I'm reading. It makes me feel like they desire me. Until they see that you're reading "Big Jugs Monthly"...
the stain Posted 12 September, 2008 Author Posted 12 September, 2008 A small suggestion.... iPod & talking books? Pah! iPods cost money I haven't got. And talking books are either abridged or camped up by hammy actors. Or both.
the stain Posted 12 September, 2008 Author Posted 12 September, 2008 Until they see that you're reading "Big Jugs Monthly"... It's usually just pictures of myself naked, tbf.
Ash Posted 12 September, 2008 Posted 12 September, 2008 It's usually just pictures of myself naked, tbf. I'd buy that for a dollar. Alas, I cannot do both things as I worry too much about where I am going and I cannot concentrate on two things at once:( Maybe you could bring out a book with some advise on how it is done? You could include some pictures of yourself.
bridge too far Posted 12 September, 2008 Posted 12 September, 2008 Off at a slight tangent - I've found it's very difficult to text whilst walking down steps. HTH
Penfold Posted 12 September, 2008 Posted 12 September, 2008 Off at a slight tangent - I've found it's very difficult to text whilst walking down steps. HTH try walking backwards
the stain Posted 12 September, 2008 Author Posted 12 September, 2008 Off at a slight tangent - I've found it's very difficult to text whilst walking down steps. HTH For some reason reading/texting is much easier walking up steps than down.
Master Bates Posted 12 September, 2008 Posted 12 September, 2008 For some reason reading/texting is much easier walking up steps than down. Does one read when it's raining and if so does your book have a special umbrella?
the stain Posted 12 September, 2008 Author Posted 12 September, 2008 Does one read when it's raining and if so does your book have a special umbrella? A sheath, made from a sheep's stomach.
Saint Martini Posted 12 September, 2008 Posted 12 September, 2008 My little brother tried to read and bike once when he was about 8. It did work and he ended up in the hospital for some stitches.
bridge too far Posted 12 September, 2008 Posted 12 September, 2008 try walking backwards Not really advisable when exiting Old Trafford IMO
Master Bates Posted 12 September, 2008 Posted 12 September, 2008 My brother died reading, got hit by a bus.
Saint_clark Posted 12 September, 2008 Posted 12 September, 2008 My brother died reading, got hit by a bus. Was he trying to read the number on the front?
saint boggy Posted 12 September, 2008 Posted 12 September, 2008 Off at a slight tangent - I've found it's very difficult to text whilst walking down steps. Atticus Finch of Maycomb Posted 12 September, 2008 Posted 12 September, 2008 Pah! iPods cost money I haven't got. And talking books are either abridged or camped up by hammy actors. Or both. all lies. talking books are rarely abridged, you can download them from sites (legally, too) and some of them are read with brilliant voices. And you dont need an ipod, you can listen on your phone. i also listen out loud at night because i dont have a bedside lamp. great stuff, i love audiobooks.
Badger Posted 12 September, 2008 Posted 12 September, 2008 A few years ago driving into Bristol in the morning I used to see some bloke walking along holding a book in front of his nose everytime... With all due respect to The Stain, this looked a knobhead thing to do,and the chap concerned must have been an utter spastic.
Mattio Posted 13 September, 2008 Posted 13 September, 2008 Its a london thing, everyone does it there and they all seem to have radar too...
Stanley Saint Posted 13 September, 2008 Posted 13 September, 2008 I'm a walking reader too. I was so gripped by a chapter last night that I spent 5 minutes under a lamp-post and my chips went cold.
Crouchie's Lawyer Posted 13 September, 2008 Posted 13 September, 2008 I am unable to read, I am illiterate
