ladysaint Posted 2 November, 2009 Posted 2 November, 2009 is the kick off time likely to be changed, its got a 3 pm kick off at the moment but normally its a lot earlier on BD, just need to make some travel arrangements.
bungle Posted 2 November, 2009 Posted 2 November, 2009 Think it might still be 3pm. Much preferred it when Boxing Day was a noon game, but we seem to have gone away from that (as have many other clubs). Yet another reason why football has got worse.
St Will Posted 2 November, 2009 Posted 2 November, 2009 thought it was Colchester away?! I had the fixture list about a foot away from me actually - I can confirm it is Exeter at home.
JRM Posted 2 November, 2009 Posted 2 November, 2009 It should stay as 3pm as still advertised as that, plus I have booked a greyhound coach down so will be annoyed if it does. I think the club are also doing a special ticket for this game £10 for an adult and child so good results between now and then could see 30k I reckon
saints_is_the_south Posted 2 November, 2009 Posted 2 November, 2009 Rather it stays 3pm KO tbh, a 12pm start means less time in the pub.

Much preferred it when Boxing Day was a noon game, but we seem to have gone away from that (as have many other clubs). Yet another reason why football has got worse. Why would you want a noon game? Would have to get up way too early and seeing as I'll be driving I can do with the extra time!
saintsdan Posted 2 November, 2009 Posted 2 November, 2009 I expect it will stay as a 3pm kick off. Boxing day kick off times, I believe, tend to be related to travelling time for the away side (and in particular fans). We normally play London sides on Boxing Day which is about 1.5 hours away so quite managable for an 12pm kick off. Exeter is 2.5-3 hours away so a 12pm kick off would be a little unreasonable. I cerainly wouldn't want to travel to Exeter for a midday start on Boxing Day.
Prince Jazzbo Posted 2 November, 2009 Posted 2 November, 2009 Anyone remember 11:30 kick offs on Boxing Day and Good Friday etc?
John Boy Saint Posted 2 November, 2009 Posted 2 November, 2009 Anyone remember 11:30 kick offs on Boxing Day and Good Friday etc? I remember us playing Arsenal at the Dell on New Years Day with an 11-11.30 am kick off, there was frost on the cage between the Junior Saints and everyone else at the Milton Road end, and the rich aroma of alcohol on peoples breaths.
The Saturday Boy Posted 2 November, 2009 Posted 2 November, 2009 I think they are already selling tickets for this, so I doubt they will change the kick off time now.
bungle Posted 2 November, 2009 Posted 2 November, 2009 Why would you want a noon game? Would have to get up way too early and seeing as I'll be driving I can do with the extra time! Because it's the boxing day tradition! Plenty of drinking done arond Xmas anyway. Boxing Day football should be moved back to noon. Used to love getting up, going straight to football and then to pub/family afterwards. Lots of cold turkey of the meaty variety.
KK the 2nd Posted 2 November, 2009 Posted 2 November, 2009 Anyone remember 11:30 kick offs on Boxing Day and Good Friday etc? Remember the Good Friday ones. A sprint to the pub after to see how many you could neck before the boozer closed at 2pm. In a strange perverse way I miss those challenges, it's all too easy now!

I miss the 12 kick off as well as Bungle says its traditional for Boxing Day.
Saints foreva Posted 2 November, 2009 Posted 2 November, 2009 Hopefully we can get a high attendance - somewhere between 25,000-32,000. I guess Exeter will bring down 3,000odd for their Flybe Cup Final.
mcjwills Posted 2 November, 2009 Posted 2 November, 2009 The main advantage of a 3pm kick off is avoiding the relatives on boxing day
Red&White Posted 2 November, 2009 Posted 2 November, 2009 The main advantage of a 3pm kick off is avoiding the relatives on boxing day absobloodylutely ! And you get more time in the pub.
trousers Posted 2 November, 2009 Posted 2 November, 2009 What is the Boxing Day fixture by the way? Boxing Day falls on Monday 28th December this year so the answer is Colchester away. We play Exeter on the day after Christmas Day (i.e. Saturday 26th December)
Gordon Mockles Posted 3 November, 2009 Posted 3 November, 2009 Because it's the boxing day tradition! Plenty of drinking done arond Xmas anyway. Boxing Day football should be moved back to noon. Used to love getting up, going straight to football and then to pub/family afterwards. Lots of cold turkey of the meaty variety. Noon is a silly time, especially for the travelling fans (both home & away teams) driving after a boozy Xmas day/night. More so the parents who probably don't get chance to sit down & relax with a drink until the kids are in bed on Xmas night. Think of others. 2/3pm is ideal & also allows for a great bubble & squeak to line the stomach & help get you through the rest of the afternoon/evening!
Saint Fan CaM Posted 3 November, 2009 Posted 3 November, 2009 I can tell anyone who's interested, I tried to get 4 tickets for the Kingsland or Itchen (including swapping my ST seat) and found it quite hard to get a decent set of seats. Looks like either they're starting to sell out OR they've decided to close a stand (I heard a rumour that the Chapel would be closed???).

davej27 Posted 3 November, 2009 Posted 3 November, 2009 As Trousers says Boxing Day is on the 28th so it will be a normal Saturday Fixture, same routine as usual.. brill!
NickG Posted 3 November, 2009 Posted 3 November, 2009 One of the aims for the fixtures is to give teams a local game on Boxing Day. This is to help with Christmas travel for fans. If you look at http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_div_2/predictor/default.stm and scroll to Boxing Day you will see that, although not derbies most are fairly reasonable travelling. Exeter fans will still have a fair trek so guess the 3pm is to make it easier for them,

Eastcowzer Posted 3 November, 2009 Posted 3 November, 2009 Trousers, Boxing day still remains on the 26th December irrespective of which day of the week it falls on. Bloody good job its a 3pm KO. Now I, and my fellow Islanders can get to the ground with out breaking our necks, through Red Funnel's so called service. But knowing their penchant for crass organisation they' probably put the last ferry from So'ton at 5pm.

Andy_Porter Posted 3 November, 2009 Posted 3 November, 2009 Are Exeter tickets on sale yet? My sister wants to go to a game over christamas so might get her a ticket for her Xmas present.
RonManager Posted 3 November, 2009 Posted 3 November, 2009 Are Exeter tickets on sale yet? My sister wants to go to a game over christamas so might get her a ticket for her Xmas present. I'm led to believe there's a little known website which carries this kind of obscure information http://www.saintsfc.co.uk/page/TicketNews/0,,10280~1804723,00.html
Andy_Porter Posted 3 November, 2009 Posted 3 November, 2009 She works most Saturdays, it's why she wants to go to a christmas game.
Whitey Grandad Posted 3 November, 2009 Posted 3 November, 2009 Please don't forget that there are no trains on Boxing Day (i.e. Saturday 26th December). It looks like I shall be coming back from Bristol that morning, so let's hope there's no bad weather. Did anybody here go to Newcastle on January 1st for that game that was called off because the roads outside were a bit icy?

They will not be shutting a stand...
mightysaints Posted 3 November, 2009 Posted 3 November, 2009 3pm good for me. Less time with the inlaws
RonManager Posted 3 November, 2009 Posted 3 November, 2009 I have contacted the club about parking on Boxing Day as there is likely to be an increase in people using cars. The club is not considering increasing the stewarded parking places as they feel there is an adequate amount already (apparently there is plenty of space at home matches). Stewarded parking places can be booked in advance from the ticket office.
trousers Posted 3 November, 2009 Posted 3 November, 2009 Trousers, Boxing day still remains on the 26th December irrespective of which day of the week it falls on. Incorrect. That's a common misconception. Boxing Day is the first working day after Christmas day. The Oxford English Dictionary concurs.

Yes we did, the pitch was in a playable condition but the roads outside were dangerous apparently we drove up to find the game called off.
NickG Posted 3 November, 2009 Posted 3 November, 2009 Incorrect. That's a common misconception. Boxing Day is the first working day after Christmas day. The Oxford English Dictionary concurs. Its not a misconception there are two schools of thought. One that it is common term for day after Christmas, the other that it sits with next working day - as that is how it started i.e. an extra holiday.
krissyboy31 Posted 3 November, 2009 Posted 3 November, 2009 Its not a misconception there are two schools of thought. One that it is common term for day after Christmas, the other that it sits with next working day - as that is how it started i.e. an extra holiday. I go with the Christmas Radio Times and they will have the 26th as "Christmas Saturday" and the 28th as "Boxing Day". I bet the Itchen Bridge isn't free for 4 days though!
NickG Posted 3 November, 2009 Posted 3 November, 2009 this just goes to prove three things; 1 that after Saturday Jiadi and Trottman are no good in the air and weak on crosses 2 we are a predictable team 3 we are doomed

One that it is common term for day after Christmas, the other that it sits with next working day - as that is how it started i.e. an extra holiday. Just because the wrong school of thought is common doesn't make it right. Boxing Day is the first weekday after Christmas Day. I think you may be thinking of St Stephen's Day. http://dictionary.reverso.net/english-definition/Boxing%20Day
NickG Posted 3 November, 2009 Posted 3 November, 2009 its like grammar, what is strictly "wrong" by academic views/records can actually become correct by common usage. I realise the OED def and the bank holiday history etc. Just shows how argumentative and pedantic this site can be! Can imagine your conversation when a colleague says "oh Saints are home to Exeter on Boxing Day" "No," Trousers replies. "Actually its not Boxing Day, you need to look at the Oxford Dictionary definition, Boxing Day is actually the holiday for the first working day after Christmas, you are thinking of..." Trousers looks around and realises his colleague has disappeared.
Whitey Grandad Posted 3 November, 2009 Posted 3 November, 2009 You've started something now... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boxing_Day Apparently the usage varies from country to country and if Christmas Day is a Saturday, the officla Christmas Day holiday can be the following Tuesday, which is actually after the Boxing Day holiday, or Boxing Day itself, depending on your point of view. Fascinating isn't it? (is there a smiley for 'yawn'?). Whatever, I know where I'll be on 26th December.
Fan The Flames Posted 3 November, 2009 Posted 3 November, 2009 Park at Ocean Village. 5 minute walk and free on bank holidays. But is it free on a Saturday. Went to the football in Bournmouth as a kid with my Dad and the bastard council waited until after kick off and ticketed the whole car park for not paying on a Saturday because the Monday was the bank holiday, ****s.
