sotonjoe Posted 2 November, 2009 Share Posted 2 November, 2009 I keep reading the fallout surrounding Frankie Boyle's comments about Rebecca Adlington on Mock the Week and yet I can't remember what he's actually supposed to have said. She really seems to be milking it so I wonder if anyone can shed any further light on the subject. Apparently, "Panellist Frankie Boyle's remarks about the Olympic champion were "humiliating" and "risked offending the audience""
sotonjoe Posted 2 November, 2009 Author Share Posted 2 November, 2009 Ah ... just found some further info here Rather confusing in terms of working out if these are 'new' comments but it appears he said "that the Olympic swimming champion resembled "someone who's looking at themselves in the back of a spoon"." miserableoldgit Posted 2 November, 2009 Share Posted 2 November, 2009 According to the press he said that she resembled "someone looking at themselves in the back of a spoon" and followed it with "sexual innuendo".

sotonjoe Posted 2 November, 2009 Author Share Posted 2 November, 2009 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBxHwOGIi2c Not really anything special. lol ... very funny though. Actually, Boyle made a good point about the comments when he said ... He blamed the producers for requesting jokes about Adlington rather than the real issues of the day, such as the war in Afghanistan. "We're fighting two wars, there's swine flu and the global economy is going down the toilet. People expect you to talk about this - and what do the production team send us? A picture of Rebecca Adlington," Boyle told Time Out magazine. "Our top story was the British team returning home from the Olympics. We'd talked about them for five weeks and yet still had to joke about them getting off a plane. "I mean, what are you going to write about, apart from the fact that she looks like a beagle in the photo?" He added: "If we were allowed to do stuff about equipment shortages in Afghanistan or the swine flu vaccination programme there would be more intrinsic interest for the audience and we wouldn't need to hook them in so much. We could be gentler, more whimsical and much more sophisticated with it. But in the end they get what they ask for." He dismissed the BBC Trust ruling, saying: "Can you imagine anyone reading that and actually giving a ----? It's disheartening. Who are these people? What authority do they have to judge comedy? ... and since left Mock the Week as he felt it had got boring and that he was going through the motions. JackFrost Posted 2 November, 2009 Share Posted 2 November, 2009 I think this is one reason why he left Mock The Week. The BBC were being too restrictive on him and I wouldn't mind betting the producers went on and on at him to tone his act down. I mean what did the beeb expect? It's like inviting someone like Bernard Manning on and then telling him to stop being racist. I hope Mock the Week get a very good replacement in otherwise the show will go downhill quickly. Boyle was definitely the 'crowd-favourite'.

I can certainly see what he means when he complains about the BBC giving the panellists pictures of Addlington and co getting off the plance and asking them to come up with something funny about it. Realistically, what are you going to come up with?

Nineteen Canteen Posted 2 November, 2009 Share Posted 2 November, 2009 I'm gutted he has left Mock The Week, the man is a flaming comical genius. Exactly. His comedy is acerbic and observational and everyone is fair game including his native Scots on whom he is the harshest. Adlington has put herself out there as Baj as pointed out and therefore becomes fair game IMO. If he think's she has that look that is his opinion and fair play for him to be tackling those who for some reason think they are untouchable. The innuendo is no different than when we see a really good looking woman with someone who makes Lundekvam look a catch. In this world of equality why not reverse the joke? What about the stick Lesley Ash got over her trout pout? Was it his decision to leave or was he asked to by the BBC? Real shame but in any event I doubt he has much to worry about provided he avoids the Billy Connolly stereotype and doesn't resort to relying on the F word to shock and amuse. The heckles placed on him by the BBC in this regard were to his advantage and he was all the funnier for it IMO.

St Will hasn't got a bloody clue and it is quite churlish to suggest that Frankie Boyle steals jokes off the internet. Will has no proof of it and all he can say is that "it's quite well known". Well it isn't quite well known at all, probably because I would imagine it's not true. As you say, the fact that the man has sold out show after show and made a good living on the telly wouldn't have happened if he was merely stealing material from the internet. This is another example of ST Will trying to be controversial and/or say something interesting. Either way, it hasn't worked and he remains a deluded dullard. St Landrew Posted 2 November, 2009 Share Posted 2 November, 2009 I don't blame Frankie Boyle in the slightest. If you book him you'll get that kind of comedy. Quite obviously, the BBC wanted him to make stupid comments that were verging on being liable to offend. They have to take responsibility for that, not Boyle. Personally, I'm not the universal fan of his comedy. Sometimes, I find him hilarious, sometimes he's a dead duck. I love Hugh Dennis'es p!ss takes of the Royal Family when he does his commentries. That doesn't seem to offend anyone. In which case, is it time to f**k off, Ma'am..?
