EastleighSoulBoy Posted 31 October, 2009 Share Posted 31 October, 2009 My first impression of starting to read this thread is that saint boggy must be under 18 because anyone any older knows exactly why the animosity exists and its all been well covered in subsequent replies. If you speak to saints fan's of my age (over 50 ) they will tell you that we referred to them as scum long before they came back with the scummer tag linked to the urban myth of strike breaking dock workers. The problem now is if you tell enough people enough lies for long enough some people will believe it.Even the BBC in their build up to the televised cup tie a few year's ago referred to saints fans getting the scum tag because of strike breaking dock workers when as we know this is complete and utter fabrication. The skate tag only came about because when they started calling us scummers back some bright spark at the ugly inside decided we may as well come up with a new derogatory term for them. Us Eastleigh lads were calling them Skates from about 74/5 onwards. All because the DJ in The Crown used to do the Discos in the Navy Yard and around the town of Portsmyth. He told us that the locals called the matelots 'skates' so we adopted it.

latter day saint Posted 31 October, 2009 Share Posted 31 October, 2009 Scummer - eat football, sleep football, hate pompey! where this hatred has come from i don't know but i can't stand the club, most of the fans & the sh*tehole of a city. seeing the divs in the horrible blue strip turns my stomach. i do have a bit of banter with skates at work but find they are usualy the ones who become abusive. a skate manager once called me "a f***ing scummer c**t" in front of customers just because i said his pfc tie had a dirty stain on it jus where the badge was

SpookyDookySaints Posted 31 October, 2009 Share Posted 31 October, 2009 ......I too have Poopey supporting friends......indeed they are probably what I would call best friends....and today I visited the Dark Side with them! Shock horror....a Saint undercover.......(please be aware that there was no way I could have been at Orient......as there would have been no competition...obviously!..... the family has just gone away and said Skate mate (as he is affectionatley known) was able to get a ticket for me as there was, once again, lots of empty seats! and at late notice a free Sat.) .....so into "enemy" territory wearing a Saints top under my coat! Now I have not been down to Farton Park for a good few years and boy what a **** tip!......it just does not change! The artwork outside of the North Terrace has got to be seen to be believed...framed in barbed wire....a frickin' disgrace....also the home fans' hospitality pub (tent)....lol!...there is even an allotment for their "community" programme. I went because it was a freebie and I was curious to see how the locals were reacting to their predicament......unfortunately, Wigan just did not turn up! However, if the Skates think they are on the up....well...we'll have to see...a long way to go and they will have to play better teams.....you see I hope they go down....along with a lot of others I want to see them fail as I do not like what they stand for.....BUT the Skate fans got behind there team.....and when they sang as one it was loud but not as loud as they like to think they are!......a Steward close to us was explaining that W*estwood had been allowed back into the stand with his drumkit and bugle and that some more vocal skates were being allowed into the Milton to help "boost" the atmosphere! To be fair it helped.....sat as a "neutral" who wanted Wigan to win was interesting as I really got to see the Skates close up......indeed there are a lot of strange 'uns down there! There are a few who, if they had known, would have given me a tough time....but as Skate mate would be on hand to "alleviate" any flash points I felt fairly safe..he can handle himself.....as I said an interesting day......! Do I hate them?......no.......do I believe in good banter? you bet.....I mean deoderant was sprayed on in the shape of SFC on my chest this am....a sort of immunisation....a Saints shirt worn under my coat...more of a "I know something you Skates dont" scenario....and finally upon returning home a good scrub down with bleach.....I cannot hate....but I can and will wish upon them a curse of nothing but ill fortune as a club.....I want them to suffer in "footballing" terms........ So if you didn't post anything about Saints how come you were amazed at the way they felt about Southampton? I'm sure there are a lot of Poopey supporters who are posting about their financial position etc. etc. but don't get a load of verbal back. Hey ho. well, Mr 'jump to conclusions' , i got to know some of the Pompey fans on said forum through a Saints forum that THEY frequented, so there was no need for me to introduce myself as a scummer, coz they already knew it!. i happened to post a sympathetic, reasoned, rational post about their financial situation (much like a couple of the Blue Few did when we were going through our troubles). I was just stunned at the ferosity of the response i got from THAT post and it just made me wonder if any of our fans felt THAT strongly about it and were THAT stupid to believe that it's ok to truly hate someone purely based on the fact of where they live (which, it appears ,some are.) saint francis Posted 1 November, 2009 Share Posted 1 November, 2009 I never understand this city. We are currently engaged in conflict in the Middle East, battling against the Taliban. It's a controversial occupation, but the soldiers who come from Southampton and elsewhere who battle for the freedoms of the innocent, in my opinion deserve our fullest support. What I don't understand is the indifference we show in this city to the terror reeked by those 25 miles East of here. They wear blue, their 'city' is certainly inferior to ours, they sing disparaging songs, swear, and here's the worst part, geographically they are really quite close. FloridaMarlin Posted 1 November, 2009 Share Posted 1 November, 2009 Portsmyth News on Friday 30th April and Monday 3rd May 1976 was all about 'the Mighty Saints' This uber hatred from the skates is a recent invention, and is consistent with most of their ******. Back in those days, the News covered Saints, and The Echo covered Pompey. I would imagine that 1976 News report was done by no less a person than Mike Neasom, perhaps the finest regional newspaper reporter of his generation. He later became the News' hugely respected P****y reporter, but he always fondly recalled the days he covered Saints in the 1960s and 70s. Likewise, the players from those days (Paine, Channon, Davies, Gabriel, et al), along with Ted and Brian Truscott, always respected and enjoyed the sort of professional relationship verging on friendship with Mike that reporters had with the club they covered. Proof of that was in the good turn-out of past Saints players and officials at Mike's funeral a few years back. The reason the Echo and News covered each others' clubs was economic. They were both after readers and circulation in the border areas and there wasn't the sort of short-sighted, blinkered blind hatred that exists now. Back then, newspapers buyers bought what they considered to be the best product and hard it may be to believe now, but there were some who considered the News' coverage of Saints to be better than the Echo! Of course, there was always the sheer delight of reading a comprehensive report, bordering on pee-pee taking that came with a Pompey defeat, and I can remember some of the hilarious stuff John May (a Saints fan) used to write when he covered them for the Echo. But both papers considered journalism to be paramount and both had editors who realised that there were good stories to be had from the other camp. The sad thing is that now, morons on both sides would not tolerate coverage of the other club in 'their' paper. I think that's called progress. Sour Mash Posted 2 November, 2009 Share Posted 2 November, 2009 When me and my brother were little and getting in football we both decided to support Man Utd, as youngsters sometimes do. Our Dad, on discovering this, wasn't happy and said we should support a team closer to home. I said "ok, I'll support saints" and my brother said "well in that case, I'll support Portsmouth". At the time it was no big thing, but as we got to secondary school it started to be more of an issue and a rivalry began to develop. This rivalry got worse and worse and we eventually ended up hating each other and arguig and fighting all the time. Things became really strained at home and it made my mum and dad's life miserable and in the end it was too much for them and they divorced. I lived with my dad and my brother lived with my mum. I blamed him for the split and he blamed me and one night, after a few beers, I saw him in town. Anger got the better of my and I charged at him shouting "You skate c***" and beat him to within an inch of his life. He was hospitalised and now, years later, still cannot walk or talk properly. My dad threw me out of the house and I was homeless for a while. Now some people may say that this is a case of fan rivalry going too far, but I say no it's not and if I ever see that spazzo brother of mine again I will kill him. That post did make me genuinely laugh out loud.

warsash saint Posted 2 November, 2009 Share Posted 2 November, 2009 I went to school in Portchester in the early 80's & deciding to support Saints seemed a stupid idea at the time Plently of rucks at school (Monday after Steve Moran's winner in the FA Cup was a bit hairy !!) with not many 'friends' to back me up. But after all that I don't detest them.....yeah i hope thet lose, i hope they get relegated. Over the years some of my best mates I have made are P*mpey fans .... i play football with loads of them every Saturday. For years I had bragging rights over them but obviously roles have been reversed & I get loads of stick these days . But at the end of the day it's just good fun banter. knellster Posted 2 November, 2009 Share Posted 2 November, 2009 Living in Nottingham I know how much it really ****es off the County fans that they hate Forest but the Forest fans almost always wish County well. I have desperately tried to do the same with the Skates but I'm afraid that I just can't. I grew up in Skatesmouth and when I was younger watched both teams at home (although I was always a Saints fan), but as I got older and experienced more of the hated from the Skates I grew to dislike them more and more. Now I really wish failure on them with an unnatural passion and can't wait for them to start next season in the Championship on -10 points, but I still wouldn't say I hate their fans and it would certainly never involve violence (but maybe that's just because I'm too old).
