Saints/Pompey rivalry

But the biggest reason i hate those sad ****s is their ability to make up stories. That bull**** about SCUM (Southampton Company Union Men) is a case in point. Not one tiny little fraction of truth in that whole story. It even doesn't stand up to even the most casual of inspections. (how can you be a company and union man ?)

And yet for years those tossers believed it.

As you rightly say, made up in a portsmyth fanzine a few years back (one of the skate posters in 'The Lounge' even confessed he was involved with it sometime ago) when some started to question the reasons behind their extreme hatred for us. And they had to come up with something tasty.

They invented something they thought would get 'poor ol' "working-class" p*mpey the sympathy vote and instant justification for their obsessive hate/bitterness/envy/etc. All this could have been instantly dismissed by a quick look at the history books but unfortunately the likes of "lovable-old-skate" Fred Drainage gave it airtime on Merid-skate TV as if was all fact and so the myth quickly grew.

Example of how the bull****e can travel...

And us barely noticing they were there all those years killed 'em the most.

Q: What's the best thing a Saints fan can do to annoy and wind-up a Pompey fan?

A: Tell them you don't hate Pompey.

They ENJOY the hatred some of us send their way, it's what they want to hear.

Keep feeding their hunger for hatred and you give them what they want. Me? I'd rather get on their tits by NOT hating them.

Yours sincerely,

I tell you what. on a sat afternoon when you can't make a saints game. Put your saints shirt on. Drive to Pompey and pop down guildhall walk and shake everyones hand stating that you don't really hate them. It won't be long before you do, trust me

Or would those of us that had developed more than the fight or flight response of Neanderthal man just walk away disliking those individuals that we had had a problem with? Or better still realise that it might be a little confrontational and not get into the situation in the first place?

It's lazy but oh so convenient to group people by some random quirk of DNA or geography, but let's be honest Thedelldays it's just not that clever.

For my sins, I hate everyone that has the 7" single of Joe Dolce's "Shaddap you face". Absolute scum of the earth. And don't tell me that's some sort of arbitrary grouping. To me it's personal and if I could, I'd kill everyone one of them. You know who you are!

I like seeing them lose and I can't understand the psychology of that Westwood bloke (nor those who allow him to ring that infernal bell) but I don't hate the fans. I worked in Pompey for a couple of years and enjoyed the banter. I never once felt threatened or intimidated by them.

I had to pick up a new suit from Gun Wharf one Saturday morning before a Saints game, I decided to save time and wear my Saints shirt. Whilst at the check, the not so lovely sales assistant informed my I was brave for wearing my shirt, I asked if she was going to give me a kicking.....her response was that she wouldn't but someone else should!!! I smiled and told her I could smell fish!!

I don't hate them. I don't hate anyone based on the club they support. I do pity those that take it so seriously that they do react in a rude/violent manner to someone just because of rivalry. It does amaze me that these feelings exist so intensely between our clubs. I was in the Trafford centre yesterday and saw people in the shirts of all of the north west clubs. No comments where heard, no vitriol, just mingling. If it was Fareham and people where so brazen to show their colours it seams it could be a riot.

Yes, I want us to beat them, yes I want the natural order restored, but frankly football is entertainment to me, not something worth all that negativity.

When me and my brother were little and getting in football we both decided to support Man Utd, as youngsters sometimes do. Our Dad, on discovering this, wasn't happy and said we should support a team closer to home. I said "ok, I'll support saints" and my brother said "well in that case, I'll support Portsmouth". At the time it was no big thing, but as we got to secondary school it started to be more of an issue and a rivalry began to develop. This rivalry got worse and worse and we eventually ended up hating each other and arguig and fighting all the time. Things became really strained at home and it made my mum and dad's life miserable and in the end it was too much for them and they divorced. I lived with my dad and my brother lived with my mum. I blamed him for the split and he blamed me and one night, after a few beers, I saw him in town. Anger got the better of my and I charged at him shouting "You skate c***" and beat him to within an inch of his life. He was hospitalised and now, years later, still cannot walk or talk properly. My dad threw me out of the house and I was homeless for a while. Now some people may say that this is a case of fan rivalry going too far, but I say no it's not and if I ever see that spazzo brother of mine again I will kill him.

Surely this has to be an ironical tale - noone is so stupid to hate their brother because of the team they support?

Mind you, some people hate their Jewish neighbour because of the clothes they wear, some people hate their neighbour because they have a different colour skin, some people hate their neighbour because they are Roman Catholic, because they are ginger, because they are short, old. feeble-mided.

All You Need is Hate. It's what makes the world go round.

I'm intrigued that you decided to share that story - assuming it's true. A few questions.

Do you feel that you come out of the story well?

Do you care?

Was your brother born 'spastic'?

Is your brother taller than you?

You're sick. How could you do something like that to your brother just over a football rivalry? No wonder our country is down the pot.

Never used to hate them - just sort of developed as a result of their ridiculous venomous over the top attitude. Experienced personally. The common theme on here if you read it through. Saints fans sgenerally see it as rivalry/banter, Pompey fans as pathological hatred/reason for violence including against small children. Whenever we play them up here there is banter, whenever we play them down there you can see the twisted anger in their **** ugly faces on the touchline, even the wheelchair section. It's different for them. Westwood actually seems quite balanced when you meet some of the retards that pass for their fans.

Before I moved away I was never into football cause I cant run for the bus so running round a patch of grass was never going to happen. as such i never followed any team really. I went to a couple of matches with me mates but it never really took hold of me so carried on skating and doing other stuff.

As soon as I moved away I got more interested and used to wait for the 5pm scores to come in. watching the vidi printer hoping to see saints with a win. the more the internet and tv got better the more i got into saints and now I will get to any game I can and think im pretty clued up on all things saints.

That said, soon after moving away I found myself looking out of all hampshire area clubs and was pleased to see any of them doing well as it represented my home county Hampshire.

My view changed with Poopy as soon as they started to do very well. It was always fun to have the banter but now I find myself wanting them to lose and drop out of existance.

I once had the pleasure in working at BAE in Poopy and I took great delight in wearing my saints shirt on the last day. Most of the people had already seen my saints desktop wallpaper and decided if they were going to give me the time of day or not but the security guard on the gate had no idea. Everyday he smiled and said hello as we arrived and left. The last day as I was leaving he raised his hand as he raised the gate, saw my saints shirt and turned his back on me. lol

I dont hate them and I dont want thier team to fold completly.

But I do want them to do so bad that they cling on with their finger tips and are always below us. That will do fine for me. Leave the hating to them IMO.

Genuine 'out of interest' query....where abouts geographically is the nominal 'dividing line' between natural Saints territory and Pompey territory?

I'm thinking is there a street somewhere between Southampton and Portsmouth where one side is 'Saints' and the other side is 'Pompey'...?

Or is there 'no mans land' between the two?

Excuse my poor grasp on south coast geography....I live furtehr north in the posh part of 'Ampshire... ;-)

My first impression of starting to read this thread is that saint boggy must be under 18 because anyone any older knows exactly why the animosity exists and its all been well covered in subsequent replies.

If you speak to saints fan's of my age (over 50 ) they will tell you that we referred to them as scum long before they came back with the scummer tag linked to the urban myth of strike breaking dock workers.

The problem now is if you tell enough people enough lies for long enough some people will believe it.Even the BBC in their build up to the televised cup tie a few year's ago referred to saints fans getting the scum tag because of strike breaking dock workers when as we know this is complete and utter fabrication.

The skate tag only came about because when they started calling us scummers back some bright spark at the ugly inside decided we may as well come up with a new derogatory term for them.

I always got the impression Whiteley had a strong mix of Saints & Pompey fans.

If you go 1 junction west to J8, you'll find it's Saints territory & 1 juntion east to J10 is Pompey

Cheers - aye, just looking at Google maps....the whole Locks Heath/Park Gate/Swanwick/Whiteley area seems prime candidate for 'dual supporter territory'. Would be interested to hear some views from people living in those areas. Is the 'rivalry' more intense in 'border' areas? Or perhaps people living there are more pragamatic about it through living in close proximity to each other all the time?

Titchfield is where purple starts to go blue. Locks Heath/Park Gate

is more a shade of pink. Warsash and Sarisbury Green are redder still. But by the time you get to The Avenue in Fareham it's pretty much royal blue all the way.

FWIW, I take each S*um fan on merit. I've met some great Poopey fans but a lot of tw*ts. The fact with S*um is they think they can upset and intimidate Saints fans. If you show them you're having none off it, their true colours (yellow) shine through.

My rule of thumb, don't be unnecessarily abusive, but if you get it give it back big time....

tbh I don't like them and love it when they do badly, but only because of the crap I had to suffer when they were doing well. Alot of my friends are from Fareham. I really hope they get relegated because I'm gonna make their life hell if they do.

At an early Portsmouth home game this season, several baseball-capped buck-toothed goons stood up and proudly showed off a home-made banner which proclaimed "-10 Its Cold in Southampton" (N.B. lack of apostrophe).

Even at the start of a new season and with the biggest gap between our clubs for several generations - making us even less of a 'threat' to them, in theory - they still engaged in the process of buying permanent markers, card and scissors and making a banner with a pitiably weak and unoriginal 'joke' on it mocking our hard times. Their bitter, small man's obsession and inferiority complex is truly staggering - it is existential for them.

I used to despite them when that vile turd Redknapp went back there, but now my feelings are a mixture of pity and complete disinterest.

Like many on here, who have grown up in a lifetime of total Saints domination bar the last 5 years, I hardly used to give Skatemuff a 2nd thought except for the odd sing song of Notarf Krap is falling Down or If I had the wings of a sparrow on match days. After all our paths never crossed until we got relegated and had to play them in Div 2 (old money).

The atmosphere was quite tense throughout the game and Ossie (RIP) scored 2 goals to send us home happy but the sheer bitter and twisted hate on the fishy fiddlers faces was quite unlike anything I'd ever seen before, and it made the win even more satisfying knowing now just how much they hated us :p. The following year at The Dell was even better a 4-0 win and the skates kicking **** out of each other in The Archers lolage. Then the 1-0 at my only visit to their shytehole of a ground just after the FA Cup semi final, not a night for the faint hearted. We went on to win the cup and they got relegated ... this was probably when I first got to the gloating stage rather than ignoring stage :D

With each year my hatred has increased and silly little things such as not buying a blue toothbrush (or blue and white striped toothepaste) or blue and white clothes became the normal thing to do

After our few years of hardship it is great to see them fall from one farce to another. I do not want them to go out of business, but a slow emabarressing demise with relegation (with some humiliating hammerings), points deductions and more relegations over the next few years would suit me just fine ;)

If Pompey are a singular team with singular fans, it is because they come from a singular place. Portsmouth is one of the most anomalous cities in Britain. Packed as it is on to Portsea Island, one of the most densely populated urban areas of Europe, it is also one of the most pugnacious. And that's being kind.

'This is a city,' says local newspaper columnist and crime writer Graham Hurley, 'whose fortunes are inextricably connected to war. For centuries, Portsmouth's life has been that of the Royal Navy and a dockyard...

It is a city that needs war, a martial city. It's the fighting city it always was -

"If in doubt, have a fight".

It has apparently been thus for 250 years. 'The necessity of living in the midst of the diabolical citizens of Portsmouth,' wrote General James Wolfe in 1758, 'is a real and unavoidable calamity. It is a doubt to me if there is such another collection of demons upon the whole earth.'

I was born early 70's & for most of my youth and adult life they were a total irrelevance to me and, I'd suggest, saints fans in general.

More recently - and particularly from the (police escorted) walk from the train station to Farton on the day we lost 4-1, the missiles (and gob - from an old fella on the balcony of his housing association hovel, "fack orff scammers") that rained down on us and their behaviour throughout & after that game, I've become convinced Gen. Wolfe had it pretty much bob on.

Filthy pikey c*nts. Enjoying their pain right now and long may it continue.

Went out in Southsea recently, and was in Little Johnny somethings and got talking to a Pompey fan in there. As a proud Saints fan I introduced myself as one, and we had a real good chat there. He said he hates Saints, but would never let it spill into anything more than banter (although he did say that was cos I was quite a bit bigger than him!). But we had a good chat about our teams, the problems with admin, Al Faraj and Al Fahim and that lot, and we just spoke about it all in good taste and good banter.

At the end of it all, I hate Pompey, and I love our rivalry, but it is of no fault of anyones who we grow up supporting. We are all football fans in the end.

I dont wish anyone death... apart from that Westwood creature, however I am proud of my record that in 30 years of my life, I have never once voluntarilty stepped foot inside Portsmouth and never spent any of my hard earned cash there.

Infact I have been there 4 times in my life, once to the DVLA office and 3 times for Portsmouth v Saints matches.

I f*cking hate them c*nts with a passion.

What if they closed all the KFCs, McDonalds' and Burger King's in Southampton?

I worked there for 15 years but fortunately during that time we were in the Preniership and they were not. They have had a good laugh at our expense recently but quite a few have realised that they are screwed and £96 million was a lot of money to spend with borrowed money without getting a stadium out of it only a cup for a year. We will be playing them next season
