Eoin Hand 1968-76; 1977-79, 302 appearances, 15 goals The 1970s were dark days for Pompey but the Irishman,... while earning 19 caps for Ireland at a time when international footballers at Fratton Park were as rare as a saveloy at a bar mitzvah Bit like now really. Can't wait to see what number Albert McCann is. Edited 29 October, 2009 by Badger
Badger Posted 29 October, 2009 Posted 29 October, 2009 Having read the Pompey article,it is fair to say there are indeed some good players in their list albeit from previous eras, far more deserving of respect than the modern prima donnas.Jimmy Dickinson in particular is a worthy leader at No1. Don't recall seeing Albert McCann though, surely more deserving than the motley shower from the 1980's ie Biley,Quinn and Webb.
derry Posted 29 October, 2009 Posted 29 October, 2009 Don't tell me Jenkins came inside too much for you? Benali gets in. One of the worst Saints players I have seen whilst we were in the top flight so perhaps Jenkins deserves a little leeway. No, trying to beat the full back for the third time usually lost the ball.
VectisSaint Posted 29 October, 2009 Posted 29 October, 2009 Wonder what a similar list for P*mpey would look like? 1 Mick Channon 2 Ron Davies 3 Bobby Stokes 4 Peter Crouch 5 Alan McLaughlin 6 Jimmy Dickenson 7 Now I'm stuck...
corsacar saint Posted 29 October, 2009 Posted 29 October, 2009 My two all time favourite Saints are numbers 1 and 2, seems pretty good to me.
SW11_Saint Posted 29 October, 2009 Posted 29 October, 2009 Not so (in my opinion) in fact I'd put Mark Wright above MLT. Channon gave more to SFC than Le Tissier,in the matter of goals, games and representing his country. Channon fulfilled his full potential, I doubt if MLT really did.He should have played more for his country and faded away less at the end of his career. Mark "moving to a big club" (Derby?!) Wright above MLT? I assume you're having a laugh?!
SW11_Saint Posted 29 October, 2009 Posted 29 October, 2009 Pompey have had some pretty good players all the same. Indeed, but as your link to the Times site confirmed, you'd have to be over 70 to remember any of them! As I suspected, no contest...

Le tiss played his whole career at the top flight, channon never did and le tiss single handidly kept us up year after year with moments of pure genius. Channon also played for pompey. The list is a farce with le tiss not number 1!
aintforever Posted 30 October, 2009 Posted 30 October, 2009 Noxious content alert:smt080:smt080 http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/football/premier_league/portsmouth/article6059531.ece Take out the old farts no one under 70 has ever heard of, and the players bought with dirty gun runner's money and their list consists of Alan Knight, Micky Quinn and Guy Wittingham LOL.
Greedyfly Posted 30 October, 2009 Posted 30 October, 2009 I almost feel that Le Tiss wasn't number one because it's the obvious choice. But ultimately I think he will always be the number one for me and probably the majority of all Saints fans...regardless of generation.
krissyboy31 Posted 30 October, 2009 Posted 30 October, 2009 Channon is the correct decision for me, with MLT a close second.
Norm Posted 30 October, 2009 Posted 30 October, 2009 Can I have 4 as my No. 1? TP Big Ron Mick MLT Terry was always my favourite but pushed very close by Ron. Big Ron was just wonderful to watch and I often marveled at how he would jump for a cross from Terry or Syde and just seem to hang in the air for ages. In my 53 years of watching saints, he was the greatest CF I saw at the Dell and SMS.
AndyNorthernSaints Posted 30 October, 2009 Posted 30 October, 2009 As much as i liked his attitude and determination i would not have Benali in the top 50. I lost count about the amount of times i left a game moaning about him during the 90's after he had messed up and been responsible for Saints conceding a goal.

I presume Anderton and Horsey Hateley were left off due to their brief tenure, but I was surprised to not see Vince Hilaire on their list. As you say, take out those from their war-time glory years and, other than the recent fleeting mercenaries, you're left with some real dross.
Hopkins Posted 5 November, 2009 Posted 5 November, 2009 The incident between Beattie and our fans...?

As you say, take out those from their war-time glory years and, other than the recent fleeting mercenaries, you're left with some real dross. Talking of ex-P*mpey players, I was in the Hospitality Area on Saturday with London Saints before and after the game, the host looked like a big ex-heavyweight boxer complete with broken nose, but he turned out to be a footballer . His name was Paul Went who played for P*rtsmouth in the 70's, I saw him play many times and he was a quality centre half, and took the stick we gave him very well. He told us that he was due to be transfered from them to us in 1975 in a Swap deal, but the deal fell through because one of the two players from Saints who were going to be exchanged didn't want to go to Nottarf Krap. The player in question was Bobby Stokes, so who knows what might have happened had the deal gone through, but one things for sure Bobby would not of scored the winner at Wembley or be the hero he still is for many Saints fans. Bobby did go to P*mpey later in his career but i'm glad it was after May 1st 1976
John B Posted 5 November, 2009 Posted 5 November, 2009 We really had some great players over the years

Saint_clark Posted 5 November, 2009 Posted 5 November, 2009 Looking at that i'm tempted to make a Saints team on FM made out of the top players on that list.
Thorpe-le-Saint Posted 5 November, 2009 Posted 5 November, 2009 The incident between Beattie and our fans...? +1.

Absolutely no argument with that...feel privileged to have seen so many good players over the years but these stand out for me too - can only claim 50 years since first supporting:)
Whitey Grandad Posted 5 November, 2009 Posted 5 November, 2009 1 Mick Channon 2 Ron Davies 3 Bobby Stokes 4 Peter Crouch 5 Alan McLaughlin 6 Jimmy Dickenson 7 Now I'm stuck... Ivan Golac?
rpb Posted 6 November, 2009 Posted 6 November, 2009 Can I have 4 as my No. 1? TP Big Ron Mick MLT At their best they were all sensational players - I think that Paine and Channon were consistently brilliant, though.
