saintds Posted 28 October, 2009 Posted 28 October, 2009 (edited) In today's Times and can be found here Quite lengthy and not sure who the author is, but a good read all the same. Edit: it's actually dated yesterday so I'm surprised no one else picked this up! Edited 28 October, 2009 by saintds
Arizona Posted 28 October, 2009 Posted 28 October, 2009 That article put a smile on my face. Can't really argue with any of it either.
krissyboy31 Posted 28 October, 2009 Posted 28 October, 2009 What about this chap ? Obviously didn't get enough votes from London Saints.
chocco boxo Posted 28 October, 2009 Posted 28 October, 2009 enjoyed that, been lucky to have seen most of them.
Colinjb Posted 28 October, 2009 Posted 28 October, 2009 Not that I mind (far from it) but what prompted them to do this article?
for_heaven's_Saint Posted 28 October, 2009 Posted 28 October, 2009 In today's Times and can be found here Quite lengthy and not sure who the author is, but a good read all the same. Edit: it's actually dated yesterday so I'm surprised no one else picked this up! Steve Keenan, one of the London Saints and works for the times. London Saints members voted throughout the summer and those with the most votes made it in.
for_heaven's_Saint Posted 28 October, 2009 Posted 28 October, 2009 Not that I mind (far from it) but what prompted them to do this article? I think the London Saints came up with the idea and as the author works for the Times, managed to get it published on their website.

Berkers Posted 28 October, 2009 Posted 28 October, 2009 Unsurprisingly it came about over pre-match beers at The Avenue involving half a dozen Lonson Saints members before a home game last season and developed from there
Causer Posted 28 October, 2009 Posted 28 October, 2009 There has been a series of similar articles in the past on other teams, Spurs, Liverpool and Arsenal I have seen featured.
Dog Posted 28 October, 2009 Posted 28 October, 2009 (edited) There has been a series of similar articles in the past on other teams, Spurs, Liverpool and Arsenal I have seen featured. Congratulations BTW. Edited 28 October, 2009 by Dog
gjphilsaint Posted 28 October, 2009 Posted 28 October, 2009 I wont argue with the list because we would all have variations, but (given their eras) I would probably have included most of those 50 in my own list. Well done for publishing such a wonderful piece of journalism. Note to all... we all have our favourites. If we judge our players on the list based on... is ...xxxx playing ? and feeling very good about it... then Ruben Agboola would be there as well... but I was a teenager!!!
rpb Posted 28 October, 2009 Posted 28 October, 2009 enjoyed that, been lucky to have seen most of them. Quite accurate too - I think George O'Brien was an oversight, though...
stevegrant Posted 28 October, 2009 Posted 28 October, 2009 They've done top 50s for loads of clubs, I remember seeing a Bournemouth one on there a couple of months ago.
alpine_saint Posted 28 October, 2009 Posted 28 October, 2009 Really enjoyed reading that. Especially loved the Ossie entry.
oldskoolsi Posted 28 October, 2009 Posted 28 October, 2009 I didn't realise Mark Dennis was so old when he played for us.
St Michael Posted 28 October, 2009 Posted 28 October, 2009 Don't get me wrong, I loved him during the mid-90s, but... Ken Monkou at No.21?!?! Really?
KK the 2nd Posted 28 October, 2009 Posted 28 October, 2009 (edited) Great read. Don't necessarily agree with some of the rankings though I do with the top 4 - would be definitely be mine as well - Big Ron, Elvis Paine, Matt Le Tiss and Mick Channon - my all time hero. When is it going to Sir Mick? Long overdue. Edited 28 October, 2009 by KK the 2nd
SNOWY Posted 28 October, 2009 Posted 28 October, 2009 What, no Pulis? Maybe we should compile a "worst 50" list
Chez Posted 28 October, 2009 Posted 28 October, 2009 we've got tommy, tommy, tommy, tommy jenkins on the wing, on the wing Tommy, Tommy jenkins, tommy jenkins on the wing Tommy, Tommy jenkins, tommy jenkins on the wing we've got tommy, tommy, tommy, tommy jenkins on the wing, on the wing...
Chez Posted 28 October, 2009 Posted 28 October, 2009 er, Rod and Ray were the twins, not Rod and Danny by the way Steve.
benjii Posted 28 October, 2009 Posted 28 October, 2009 I haven't read this but no doubt they have overlooked Duncan Spedding. Lazy journos. Makes my blood boil.
Saint Fen Posted 28 October, 2009 Posted 28 October, 2009 Quite accurate too - I think George O'Brien was an oversight, though... His goalscoring record was outstanding and I think he's 5th overall on the clubs list. Should be there in the top 50. Bit too young to seen him play by about 30 years though!
Saint Fen Posted 28 October, 2009 Posted 28 October, 2009 I didn't realise Mark Dennis was so old when he played for us. Think that is a typo, think its meant to be 23.
Norm Posted 28 October, 2009 Posted 28 October, 2009 Quote, 'It was always going to be between Le Tiss and Mick, but as much as Le Tiss was the epitome of Saints in the 1990s, so Channon was the backbone of the club in the 1970s. It's a generational thing. Those aged in their 30s would vote Le Tiss: those in their 50s for Channon'. And I would write, those in their 60s might have said No 1 was Terry.
Pancake Posted 28 October, 2009 Posted 28 October, 2009 Was Dodd really at the helm with Gorman for 5 months? Was Niemi really substituted BY Paul Jones in the Cup Final? "..n 1980 leading Keegan, Ball et all"
RedAndWhite91 Posted 28 October, 2009 Posted 28 October, 2009 It's interesting that many people overlook the fact that Peter Shilton made most of his England caps whilst at Saints.
Hatch Posted 28 October, 2009 Posted 28 October, 2009 makes me upset to read all those names that have graced our club, and then to think about all the **** that have played for us over the last 4 or 5 years.
RonManager Posted 28 October, 2009 Posted 28 October, 2009 makes me upset to read all those names that have graced our club, and then to think about all the **** that have played for us over the last 4 or 5 years. It would be interesting to see a graph of player 'ins' versus 'outs' over the last 50 seasons. If someone would like to spend hours and hours researching and compiling the information, then I'm more than happy to spend 30 seconds reading it whilst stroking my beard and saying in a sagely way 'that's interesting', before moving on with my life and forgetting all about it.
Huntingdon Posted 28 October, 2009 Posted 28 October, 2009 In 2006 when Kelvin Davis was getting serious abuse from every corner, who would have thought 3 years later he'd appear in a list of top 50 Saints of all time

That gave me my first genuine laugh of a rather **** day. Thank you.
alpine_saint Posted 28 October, 2009 Posted 28 October, 2009 What, no Pulis? Just spat coffee over my keyboard...
mikec Posted 28 October, 2009 Posted 28 October, 2009 Great article! Can't argue with a top 4 of Davies, Paine, Davies, Le Tissier and Channon, although personally I would still have put Le Tiss at number 1 (and I am in my 50s). The McMenemy era rightly dominates the upper part of the list. Not sure that I would rate Steve Williams as high as 5th though - he had some great days but could also be a bit inconsistent. Armstrong at 9 is possibly a bit generous - higher than Case and Keegan at 13. I think Sydenham and Chivers deserve to be a bit higher than 22/23. Thanks for the link.
Huntingdon Posted 28 October, 2009 Posted 28 October, 2009 Where the heck was Bobby Stokes? Made 216 appearances, scoring 40 goals - including the most famous Saints goal ever!
Arizona Posted 28 October, 2009 Posted 28 October, 2009 Interesting that Pahars was so far ahead of Beatts. I like both and was pleased to see Marian in the top 20, but Beattie's contributions were just as important, if not as crucially timed.
MbaleSaint Posted 28 October, 2009 Posted 28 October, 2009 Was Dodd really at the helm with Gorman for 5 months? Was Niemi really substituted BY Paul Jones in the Cup Final? "..n 1980 leading Keegan, Ball et all" Yes. Niemi went off injured in the Cup Final and Jones came on, thereby claiming the distinction of keeping a clean sheet in a cup final and still finishing on the losing side. First time ever a keeper had been substituted in an FA Cup Final.
krissyboy31 Posted 28 October, 2009 Posted 28 October, 2009 Where the heck was Bobby Stokes? Made 216 appearances, scoring 40 goals - including the most famous Saints goal ever! There is 50 places to fill. If we all put in our favourites, we could probably come up with 250. There are some in the list I don't agree with but most I do. On the subject of Bobby Stokes, he obviously scored the cup final goal but he wasn't a great player (much the same as Ipswich coming up with a list without Roger Osbourne). He would be ahead of the likes of Hugh Fisher in my list but not necessarily in my top 50.
Red Alert Posted 28 October, 2009 Posted 28 October, 2009 Yes. Niemi went off injured in the Cup Final and Jones came on, thereby claiming the distinction of keeping a clean sheet in a cup final and still finishing on the losing side. First time ever a keeper had been substituted in an FA Cup Final. I believe you missed the pedantry, the word in question was BY, it should have been FOR.
Pancake Posted 28 October, 2009 Posted 28 October, 2009 I believe you missed the pedantry, the word in question was BY, it should have been FOR. Thank you Tsu. not really pedantry when talking about an article published in the Times though, is it?
MbaleSaint Posted 28 October, 2009 Posted 28 October, 2009 I believe you missed the pedantry, the word in question was BY, it should have been FOR. Semantics!
jam Posted 28 October, 2009 Posted 28 October, 2009 Was Dodd really at the helm with Gorman for 5 months? Was Niemi really substituted BY Paul Jones in the Cup Final? "..n 1980 leading Keegan, Ball et all" If we're proofing the article then I believe it was Souness who came out with the 'Struggling Southampton' line, not Strachan.
derry Posted 28 October, 2009 Posted 28 October, 2009 Tommy Jenkins FFS. He was another cameo player of little substance. Leaving out George O'Brien, unbelievable, he was in a different class to Derek Reeves. Reeves missed so many goals whilst George was a deadly finisher. Reeves scored freely in the third division but that his level. Ted Drake? Eric Day?
Dalek2003 Posted 28 October, 2009 Posted 28 October, 2009 Dave Armstrong the 'bald eagle', one of the most underated players. Steady and dependable. We had a fantastic team in the 80's and Nicholl was agreat manager !
Trumush Posted 28 October, 2009 Posted 28 October, 2009 Well done to the guy's who compiled that article, a great read, and those photo's brought back plenty of memories. I too have been lucky enough to have watched most of the 50 in action for the Saints. I was sat in the West Stand right behind Ivan Golac when he hit that rocket mentioned in the article. The one touch "triangles" between Golac,Williams and Alan Ball really were a joy to watch.
