Players that shouldn't have left Saints.....

Danish Saint

Recommended Posts

Been reading the threads on Saga and Surman, and it got me thinking of players that used Saints as "a window for a better club", but were actually playing their best football at Saints, and shouldn't have moved on, but did because of the money.

Hassan Kachloul springs to mind as well as Kevin Davies.

Ted Bates was on record as saying the ONLY sale he ever regretted was that of Martin Chivers.

Although it was (then) a British club record £125,000

I think Spurs fans would have said they got a bargain.

Yes, but we had a certain young player named Micky Channon to replace him ! I believe Chivers wanted to move anyway, we also got Frank Saul as part of the deal. So I think it is fair to say we did not suffer too much as a result of the transfer albeit Chivers was clearly a very good striker. Saints losing players to Spurs, sounds familiar.

Couldn't resist could you? Well done. Everyone thinks you're really clever.

Agreed .fhs. There's no pleasing some people - is there?

You can't legislate for injuries and illness and say IF ONLY...but here's a few.

Ron Davies - Despite his wonderful record - was kicked around so much by angry defenders not good enough to beat him fairly - and finally lost the skill.

Steve Mills - terribly injured in a car crash 1975 - later died of leukemia.

Austin Hayes - great young prospect. Scored on his debut, Irish international

League Cup final team 1979 - died of cancer aged 28.

Ronnie Ekelund - looked great for that half season..had bad back..was it ?

Marian Pahars - How good might he have been - but for that ankle injury.?

Michael Svensson - One of the best Saints CH in my lifetime !

I'm sure people can make there own lists but surely we can't complain about

MLT ...after all those wonderful years and 200+ goals.

I think any fan who'd seen MLT for only ONE season would have got their money's worth.

(Do older Man.Utd fans complain about George Best (who was " finished " by the time he was 26) ..I think not.

I'm only 18 so I can't remember a lot of these players. However I agree with the suggestions of Fernandes and Niemi. Possibly Anders Svensson aswell. One player's name I'd throw in is a centre half called Fitz Hall. Playing in a higher division now but had he stayed with us and helped us stay up in the Prem, who knows?

Also suprised no one's mentioned Martin Cranie aswell.

Beatts.

I say that from a slightly selfish reason in that if he hadn't of left we'd probably have stayed up, and lets face it he did c*ck all at Everton except get paid more but did get to chuck noodles over a skate in a Manchester restaurant so it wasn't all a wasted effort I suppose ;)

And in hindsight staying up that season would only have delayed the inevitable relegation in the long run.

Glad he is back in the top league and scoring goals.

Definitely and with a doubt one of the best players I've ever seen in a Saints shirt (and that includes when he was playing :))

Hi Pete ... and there is the basis for a whole fred of it's own..... players seen in a Saints shirt but not actually seen playing !!

We seem to have had a whole crop in the Dave Jones era ... Barry Venison, Beresford, David Hirst, David Howells and more recently some bizarre foreign imports other than Delgado such as Sarmiento (was he the torpedo or was that someone else?), Kanchelskis, er lol at me can't remember their names now, but hopefully you get my drift!!

Remember back in the day somebody produced a tee shirt stating "I've seen Charlie George play for Saints "!!

I wish Charlie Livesey had stayed with the Saints instead of going to Chelsea.

some serious DELL memoirs from different sources suggest that Charlie wasn't such a good role model, or so postive in the dressing room (!) ...still you're partly right... but without that deal we wouldn't have got Cliff Huxford in our backline..

and for that I'm not sorry.

They didn't come much harder..(and that includes even Jimmy Case).

Cliff Huxford.......The Gloustershire foghorn.......You could hear him all around the ground on those damp foggy evening games.....Sooo loud.

Great captain and as you rightly say...Hard as they come.

He went on to work for the coastguard as a lighthouse audible warning signal.:D

Frank Saul hardly a great success at the Dell

Disagree,

he was woefully off form the season he left partlydue to a niggling ankle injury.

Also he was keeping Crouch out of the side was one of, if not the most prolific Premiership striker in the second half of that season.

There's another one, Peter Crouch.

Yes it was a choice of either playing for a Championship club or for Liverpool, but he went from a prolific striker to not scoring for his new club Liverpool in over 23 hours of football.

Neil Heaney's career spectacularly nosedived after leaving Saints.

At the time he was one of my favourite players :-(

He was good

I remember a game we win against coventry at the dell when big fat Ron had a bust up with andy gray in telly. I'm sure heaney scored the winner that day?

I always thought Neil Ruddock might have achieved more out of his playing career by staying at Saints. He would probably have ended up captaining Saints and eventually could have been an England international, something which eluded him after leaving SFC.No doubt he would have moved on eventually but he probably moved too soon.

Although his time at the yids and Liverpool may have been more glamorous I don't feel Ruddock ever fulfilled his potential after leaving Saints.

I think that was a 0-0 game, and Beasant got MoM, prompting Big Ron to lose his rag... lol

Think it might have been Dodd actually in the first couple of minutes. BFR blew his top as Richard Keys and Andy Gray stuck into him a bit and said Beasant was MOTM. Big win though and had to laugh as BFR threw his earphones down at the end of the interview!

I think he more than made up for that once he actually banged one in for them. He has had an excellent games to goals ratio for every club since saints (including England).

Seeing that he has a real chance of playing in the world cup next year I doubt a day goes by where he regrets leaving us

Just watching Bale against Arsenal, what on earth has happened to him.

Crap touch, seems to have lost that bit of pace, can't beat the first defender with a cross and keeps giving the ball away.

He needs to move ASAP or his career will go completely down the toilet.

He has been linked to Brum recently, prob go there in Jan.

If he doesn't do something soon though it will be back to the championship for him.

I agree totally. He used to own the left hand side of St Mary's at times. He was a joy to watch. Too much, too soon.

Redknapp doesn't seem to rate him.

Although I hear the general consensus from the spurs fans has been that Assou-Ekotto has been superb for them this season so I think he's keeping Bale out of the team.

Moran - on the verge of England with us, never did much after leaving.

Dennis - was destined never to reach the same level of performance as he did at Saints.

Bale - skulking around in Spurs reserves.

Williams - didn't realise how good it was here.

Channon - played at Pompey, WTF!!

....not a player but

Hoddle - was on to a good thing here then blew it at Spurs.
