IMRAN TAHIR SIGNS DEAL27/10/2009

Warwickshire have today confirmed terms have been agreed with 30 year old Pakistani legspinner Imran Tahir to become the Club’s overseas player for 2010 – subject to final fitness checks on arrival and approval of the appropriate work permits.

Imran has taken 382 first-class wickets at an average of 25.89. During 2008 he signed for Hampshire and took 96 first-class wickets in two seasons with the county, including 44 in just seven matches to save them from relegation in 2008.

Imran is an experienced cricketer and has previously completed stints with Middlesex, Yorkshire and more recently the Titans in South Africa.

Commenting on the signing, Warwickshire’s Director of Cricket, Ashley Giles said “Imran is a great signing for the Bears. He brings with him knowledge and experience that will add much to our young, developing squad. Not only is his first class bowling average impressive but his one day figures are up there with the best. I am sure that Imran will be a valuable addition to our attack next summer”.

Did I get it wrong ? I thought Tahir was unavailable which is why we signed Mendes.
That is what I thought. Came as a big suprise to me as he told me just before he flew out to SA he was hoping to come back for a few games when Mendis could not play.

He has not featured for Titans so far this season in SA. Not sure if he is injured. May be he has not had the nod from SA National side. He was not named in the IOD or 20/20 squads.

Well I'm more than happy with Mendis as a replacement but I seem to recall you/someone saying he might cover for Mendis at some point. Still a shame in many ways as he was not just a very good bowler but very enthusiastic as well. I can only assume you are right and SA have indicated he will not be picked but there is a long way to go before our season starts of course so who knows Tahir might yet be in SA plans ?

Quote from Giles White:

“When we signed Mendis we postponed the second year of Imran’s contract to 2011. At the time there were visa issues and we weren’t sure that he was going to be able to come back. Things have changed now, but the other issue was that if he got picked for South Africa he wouldn’t be here until half way through the season which wouldn’t really have suited us. So we agreed with Immi that we would be pro-active in trying to sign Mendis. In an ideal world we wouldn’t want him playing for another County, but we wish him well at Warwickshire and he’ll be back here for 2011.”
