My idea for a new Southampton badge

Swindon Town changed their badge in the 90's

And what a grand job they did of it too

http://www.footballcrests.com/clubs/swindon-town-fc

I jest of course...it's fudging hideous...

----------------------

Personally i'm perfectly happy with the badge...and always have liked it...more so with the old style football...

What with the sheer amount of whinging on this site when we issue a new kit i'm not sure i could take it if we changed the badge...

I would like a badge that says "saints" somewhere on it and 1885. no tacky scarf or ball too. the new QPR one looks classy, although somewhat empty in the centre where it just says queen's park rangers.

are you mad mate, the new qpr crest has as much class as a donought eating chav watching celeb come dancing drinking carling lager, it's a bit like the liverpool crest with the flaming tourches, wtf!!!!!! you can't just make up tradition, it has to mean something

city crest for me please, ty.

I love the current badge too. I agree that it looked better with the "old style" long-thin-panelled football than the current black-and-white-hexagon-panneled one that it's had since the mid 90's. Overall though, I think our current badge is one of the most distinctive badges of any team in the league.

I don't mind changing it for one season, as long as we go back to the current badge straight afterwards.

well, all traditions are made up at some point, then over time they become....tradition. it's all a little ambiguous. but yes, the qpr one really doesn't seem to mean much, and the centre is quite empty.

i like having the halo on our badge in some way, but the scarf, that does seem outdated. and a tree? fine, we have some nice trees, but come on. if we are having a tree perhaps we could have the outline of one, in a notts forest way, rather than a cartoony little green thing.

Just leave it alone ade, we don't need your meddling.

That one is quite good, actually, and is in the style that might work for us.

Simple shape, one or maximum two key images/symbols, name of club, year.

Nice, clean and contemporary but not horribly "modern" like Swindon or Bournemouth.

And no mention of boys clubs.

That rocks. If a rugby team ever came to play for Southampton (professional) that would have to be the badge!

Do love the idea myself as I love both football and rugby and thought it would open the possibility of making a little bit of money to help the football club stay alive even if it would only be one stand's worth of spectators money!

Discussed on here a few times before. Almost every team in recent years has made significant changes to their badges. The current Saints badge only came into existed in the 1970's so hasn't always been used. Just look here http://www.geckosaint.com/badges.htm for a badge history of Southampton.

Below is my design for my Football Manager Live team called St. Marys Y.M.A. but it could be easily used for Saints. It combines the current Saints badge with the very first Saints badge from 1885.

In 2010 we could use this badge and the home kit from 1885 in our 125 year anniversary year http://www.historicalkits.co.uk/Southampton/Southampton.htm

Does anyone else see the irony of Y.M.A being on this bag, i think it works rather well for saints!

what makes the badge traditional is that it was on our shirts when we won the cup and in two other major cup finals. And since we never had a shirt badge before 1974 it is the only shirt badge we have ever had.

It changed in the mid 90s when the old style football became the pentagon one, which I agree is rubbish since no one uses them and I would like to see it changed back. The biggest argument against changing it is that the new design would probably be done by expensive graphic designers and we would end it with something completely lacking in soul like Arsenal's new badge.

I'd prefer to keep the existing badge long-term; I know it's only been around since the '70s but there's just something very distinctive about it, it really sticks out from other club badges and as others have said - if it aint broke don't fix it.

Having said that I quite like your idea of just having it for the one season with a historical kit; I wouldn't mind that at all

I think the badge says everything about Southampton - depicting the sea, new forest and hampshire rose.

If the badge were to change how about breaking the centre portion into quaters with each quater depicting the elements of the current badge and something commerative in the final quarter?

Disregarding opinions on the design (not a huge fan myself, but then I like our current badge as is), I feel I ought to point out that this is not "your" design, but rather the design of some guy called tweej on the FML forum.

Not saying you meant to do it, but implying that someone else's work is your own is distinctly uncool.

A special kit for Saints 125th year. I am up for that.

As we're already tied into a 5 year deal with Umbro who only produce kits for one season you can guarantee we WILL be doing that in 2010, whether it's branded as "special" or not.

Incidentally, Portsmouth's crappy all blue and gold effort this season is their 110th anniversary kit, which is a pretty lame-o reason to have a "special" kit. At least 125 is something resembling a milestone.

Oh, and I hate the badge. The black background is unnecessary and even though it reflects the first badge looks horrendous, the laurel wreath is a hackneyed cliche 120 years later, the crown is, well, just... well, nothing to do with Saints in the 21st Century and the only good bits about it are the bits which are on the current badge because they're distinctive compared to other club badges.

Having said all that I wouldn't be against a version of the old crest with the Mayflowers on it,

badges_03.jpg

and I'd even put up with white with a red sash (as long as the shorts and socks were the 1888 YMA traditional colours)

southampton_1885-1889.gif

or red/white quarters from the St Mary's YMA days either

southampton_1889-1890.gif

Unfortunately the first 42 years as Southampton FC saw the red and white stripes alongside various combinations of navy shorts and socks, which I don't think we should be revisiting even for one season.

We should probably lay off the 3/4 length knickerbockers too. And use a crossbar and an 18 yard penalty area instead of an arc.

What about a collapsing Bargate, with a ruddy faced masked man, dressed in a camel coat with a moleskin collar, running away laughing and carrying a bag marked swag; with a couple of scarved fans standing by watching and crying.

Seems more appropriate to me!

This should be our crest, or the current one without the naff ball and scarf and name band.

Guy%20Arab%20MK3%20Park%20Royal_Southampton%20City%20Council_Crest_Large.jpg

Interesting how similar this is to our current club crest.

Both have the shield in spilt in red and white haves (or party per fess argent and gules, if you will!) with the Mayflower heavily featured.

And both have a golden 'badge' (fortress/justice or halo) above a red and white banner.

I s'pose we could wear red and white feathers instead of scarfs?! Might catch on...
