OldNick Posted 26 October, 2009 Posted 26 October, 2009 I dont care what end was chosen but I still believe the club should make a real effort to encourage and promote the thought to have an end that would roar the team home. Yesterday Souness and the others on Sky mentioned that they thought Liverpool would up their game by kicking to the Kop second half, the Northam do ok but if that was doubled can you imagine what an atmosphere we could create that could intimidate the opposition team but also lift ours? We must be the only club around who dont have a sole end of fans singing the team to victory. We have a fragmented set of fans who are scattered piecemeal around the ground singing in small groups.
once_bitterne Posted 26 October, 2009 Posted 26 October, 2009 Is this anothet re-hash of the old faithfull, can't we move the away fans thread? Can't we just accept that it is never going to happen as the current location is the only place the police would allow away fans to be is where they are currently. There we go, I've saved three pages of tedious arguenments. Locked.
unionhotel Posted 26 October, 2009 Posted 26 October, 2009 Totally agree. As fans we should be intimidating the opposition and roaring our boys on.
Kadeem Hardison Posted 26 October, 2009 Posted 26 October, 2009 Wouldn't it involve rebuilding the stadium to have a Spion Kop end?

No we don't We have the Northam and the itchen north. A few people who like to sit down go in the Kingsland north. When we're doing well the rest of the itchen and the rest of the kingsland get involved. It is much the same everywhere else.
once_bitterne Posted 26 October, 2009 Posted 26 October, 2009 I don't think that we will ever be a very vocal set of fans however we are grouped. We only have one song and can't even do that one properly.
Matthew Le God Posted 26 October, 2009 Posted 26 October, 2009 What about splitting the Northam and Itchen North supporters into four and having a block of them in each corner of the stadium to spread the vocal support around. "St. Mary's surround sound"
St Will Posted 26 October, 2009 Posted 26 October, 2009 I thought the extension of the Northam around that corner looked really good yesterday, and when they got going, made a good bit of noise.

There we go, I've saved three pages of tedious arguenments. Locked. There is another thread on this topic from a few weeks ago. Was discussed in detail and I think we concluded it will more than likely stay as it is for policing reasons. With the only other option to move the away fans round a bit but then there is the problem of boxes etc.
St Will Posted 26 October, 2009 Posted 26 October, 2009 The only way we could make a Kop End is shifting everyone round to the Chapel Stand, but that would require a 150 yard extra walk for the majority of the Northam faithful ;-)
Toomer Posted 26 October, 2009 Posted 26 October, 2009 IMO the main problem is that the most vocal support is not behind the goal as it was at The Dell, if you look at most other clubs the Kop is behind the goal.
Glasgow_Saint Posted 26 October, 2009 Posted 26 October, 2009 Why would we name one of our stands after one of the Liiverpool stands? The Kop at Anfield dates back to 1905-06. At the end of that season which saw Liverpool lift the second of their league championships the directors at the club decided to reward the loyalty of the fans by building a new brick and cinder banking at the Walton Breck road end of the ground. It was christened as the Spion Kop by Ernest Jones in memory of the many scousers who died in battle over a hill in South Africa by the same name during the Boer War. Just re-naming a stand at SMS the Kop end is silly.
BodminSaint Posted 26 October, 2009 Posted 26 October, 2009 i have always thought the whole of the itchen stand would look good with the singers in, man citys old ground had this and it looked and sounded great..... would look good on the box also
fanimal Posted 26 October, 2009 Posted 26 October, 2009 When it was full up in Premier days, and I had my ST at that end, the noise was immense when on song. Bit like the Milton Rd v Archers Rd in the early transition days. The simplest thing would be to kick toward the Northam in the second half whenever we win the toss!
Rattlehead Posted 26 October, 2009 Posted 26 October, 2009 We are walking this league now, why on earth do we need a 'Kop end'?
VectisSaint Posted 26 October, 2009 Posted 26 October, 2009 When it was full up in Premier days, and I had my ST at that end, the noise was immense when on song. Bit like the Milton Rd v Archers Rd in the early transition days. The simplest thing would be to kick toward the Northam in the second half whenever we win the toss! You're asking for trouble, suggesting that the Chapel end ever made any noise. The uber fans believe that no-one other than the Northam ever made any noise of any sort ever Unfortunately the acoustics in the stadium (and many others) just give the impression that all of the noise comes from the bit you are standing in.
sotonjoe Posted 26 October, 2009 Posted 26 October, 2009 Incidentally, if having a whole end of home supporters is key, why did the vocal contingent head for the Northam stand in the first place?
La BoIS Saint Posted 26 October, 2009 Posted 26 October, 2009 Is it me or did we score three goals in the Chapel End on Saturday?
Huffton Posted 26 October, 2009 Posted 26 October, 2009 The simplest thing would be to kick toward the Northam in the second half whenever we win the toss! Do we have to have this every week? Does it not occur to some peole that there may be a teensy tactical decision by the captain to kick towards the Chapel in the second half? In fact saturday was a perfect case in point, wish I had my camera as I could have taken pics to end this once and for all. First half their goalie was wearing a cap as he had the sun in his eyes, as did 3/4 of the Northam stand. By the start of the second half the sun had moved round and only a small corner of the pitch wasn't in shade. Now I realise with the darker evenings this advantage will lessen, but in the meantime can we please just trust the players, rather than our, judgement? After all its not us who have to put the bloody ball in the net!

diggers Posted 26 October, 2009 Posted 26 October, 2009 Never gonna work, you've got to be able to shave to stand in the Itchen North!
CHAPEL END CHARLIE Posted 26 October, 2009 Posted 26 October, 2009 Do we have to have this every week? Apparently we do , it's a little known regulation buried deep in the forum rules .
StDunko Posted 26 October, 2009 Posted 26 October, 2009 You're asking for trouble, suggesting that the Chapel end ever made any noise. I totally disagree with your "acoustics give the impression that all the noise comes from tghe stand you are in argiement". I have watched games at SMS from each of the 4 stands (depending on who I was at the game with) and 90% of the noise clearly does come from the Northam. I would keep the away fans where they are at present, but if we ever want to get the best out of the stadium we need the Itchen north open again. There is one easy way to make this happen and that is by selling 30K+ tickets.
Saint Fan CaM Posted 27 October, 2009 Posted 27 October, 2009 Don't see the attraction of having a couple 1,000 Liverpool fans at SMS to be honest.
South City Si Posted 27 October, 2009 Posted 27 October, 2009 When the Itchen Corner re-opens it will be better as we keep the opposition quiet! We have two singing stands and we should be grateful for that. The away fans find it more intimidating and it's harder for them as well to get a song going. We don't need one 'Kop' end, we need the ground to be more full so the Itchen Corner is re-opened!
crouchi Posted 27 October, 2009 Posted 27 October, 2009 I assume MK Dons won the toss on Saturday as we kicked off, so they chose to kick to the Northam in the 2nd half
Scummer Posted 27 October, 2009 Posted 27 October, 2009 I see Spurs announced their new stadium plans yesterday, they are having a large single tier Kop-style end: http://news.bbc.co.uk/local/london/hi/people_and_places/newsid_8326000/8326597.stm

Maybe when the extend St Mary's to 55,000 we could do something like that!

Nothing is broken and so it doesnt need fixing. Our home record was not good in the PL either. Why people cant see the advantages of having 1 end as an intimidating area I can't understand. I dont care if it was the Northam or Chapel if it meant creating a fantastic atmosphere then it would enhance all our matchday experiences. The away teams always kick to their fans if given the choice and they seem quite often to lkift their game in doing so.
