Legod Third Coming Posted 25 October, 2009 Posted 25 October, 2009 Young man takes a lot of flack on this site, much of it unwarranted. Yes, he still has the occasional Amityville moment, but they are becoming fewer and fewer. Yesterday, I thought his link up play was excellent, especially with Hammond/Morgan/Antonio, and his delivery for the goals was absolutely first class. He has a wonderfully accurate right foot. Even the thinking with the corners and freekicks has improved out of all recognition from earlier in the season. It's one thing to know you're supposed to chip the ball at ankle height into the path of your forward, it's another thing to do it perfectly. Well done LLoydy, my unsung hero of the game.
Huffton Posted 25 October, 2009 Posted 25 October, 2009 Agreed, was a bit dissapionted Lloyd didn't get a MOTM option in the reaction thread. Going forward he has always been a good player, but his defensive play has come on leaps and bounds this season. I sit in the Chapel and his two crosses were absolutely pin point for the goals.
NorthamSteve Posted 25 October, 2009 Posted 25 October, 2009 He asisted 2 goals yesterday, couldn't fault him.
ribbo Posted 25 October, 2009 Posted 25 October, 2009 he's looking to shape into a good pro, at one point in the first half yesterday trotman was bawling at LJ, LJ was bawling at Papa and Wotton was going Batsh-t at all 3 of them, it was good to see. Im a huge LJ fan, however he might need to work on his deadball crossing, it's definatly not as good as when he has the ball put to him for a cross
Andy_Porter Posted 25 October, 2009 Posted 25 October, 2009 Been saying for a while that we need him in the side just for his set piece delivery. It makes such a change to have someone competent taking the corners and free kicks. Surman and Lallana's where terrible last season. He's really improving as a right back, you can see an improvment in every game. Good to have an accademy product come into the side and improve over a couple of seasons to the point he's a first team regular ahead of someone like Thomas.
LostBoys Posted 25 October, 2009 Posted 25 October, 2009 His problems are he has no pace and he stands off his player far too much which means he rarely tackles and this is not a great scenario for a full back. You should compare him with his opposite number at left back. He did have a good game going forward yesterday so no complaints.

Quite agree......it does worry me what will happen when he comes up against a flying winger or overlapping full back for the reasons you state. But at the moment he isn't really being tested in that department and as you can only judge him on what happens and not what might happen he is playing well.
Saint Charlie Posted 25 October, 2009 Posted 25 October, 2009 No winger has consistently got the better of him this season and he is well worth his place in the team. I went with a couple of neutrals yesterday and both said they thought James looked really good.
S-Clarke Posted 25 October, 2009 Posted 25 October, 2009 He's a solid player, and he's still pretty young (21 i think) He started a bit iffy last season but slowly came into his own...it's been the same this season. His last few games have been top notch. He could have gone in the summer too, as a couple of championship clubs put in tentative enquiries for him.
Danish Saint Posted 25 October, 2009 Posted 25 October, 2009 Still not entirely convinced.... Add a bit more pace and tackles and I will be..... But happy to see him evolve and getting better....

Murty is a much better RB defensively than James but LJ's deliveries are by far the best out of everyone else in the team. Therefore I think we would benefit by keeping him in the team. The next problem is you would have to put him in CM, but who do you replace?!

The next problem is you would have to put him in CM, but who do you replace?! Would like to see him play the Wotton role myself. I'd stick him there against Charlton with Thomas at right back just to see how he does. He did alright playing there against Charlton and has a fair bit more to his game than Wotton.

I went with a couple of neutrals yesterday and both said they thought James looked really good. He has been left standing quite a few times, not so much recently admitted but in the first few games of replacing Thomas.....its probably helped that his positional play has improved in recent weeks, another plus mark for the coaching staff I suspect.
crouchi Posted 25 October, 2009 Posted 25 October, 2009 Lloyd looks to be improving and adding something to the team. These are the sort of players we need to keep hold of rather than letting them drift away to CCC clubs.

Saint_clark Posted 25 October, 2009 Posted 25 October, 2009 I like him in CM, but at RB he still looks shaky. Murty isn't a long term option for us we should look at buying another one in january.
saintrich Posted 25 October, 2009 Posted 25 October, 2009 He has a wonderfully accurate right foot. He played well yesterday and got two good assists but I think thats going a bit far. So many times he over hits his crosses out of play from deep positions. His crossing rates at about 50/50.

I went with a couple of neutrals yesterday and both said they thought James looked really good. You wern't at Carlisle then? Robson showed him up all game. Get Murty back and play James as the holding midfielder. Unless we play 442, then he should be on the bench.
shurlock Posted 25 October, 2009 Posted 25 October, 2009 He looks much better when a real wide player is in the team, perhaps because their pace gives him a bit more protection. Given we have Harding and Lallana on the other side, its some tribute that for the second game running (see my Oldham comments last week), we've looked much more dangerous down the right.
Dellman Posted 25 October, 2009 Posted 25 October, 2009 Good to have such a strong bench and variety of options, when the injuries and suspensions dig in, we'll still be ok,and LJ ability to multi task makes it even better
funkymojo44 Posted 25 October, 2009 Posted 25 October, 2009 Sounds a bit like Chris Baird in that he can fill in at DM as well. Ironically Baird has been fantastic at DM for NI recently so maybe James could do the same.

A fairly competent player but limited and will have to be replaced by a better player with pace in due course if we are to climb up the leagues.

Whenever he comes up against anything that could be described as a 'nippy' player, he seems to tread water.
oggiee Posted 25 October, 2009 Posted 25 October, 2009 Bumped into him a few weeks ago in Junk (it was a Tuesday night), don't remember what I said to him as I was long gone by this time but whatever i did say it obviously worked as he's had 3 assits in his last 2 games and been in the league 1 team of the week! Great to see yet another academy lad doing well in the first team.
Chez Posted 25 October, 2009 Posted 25 October, 2009 great crossing but I don't think you should go overboard on the praise. Defensivley he still looks weak. He didn't get close enough to the wiger on a couple of occasions making it far too easy to get a cross in. I wasn't impressed with his tackling either. IN the past he has been evil in the tackle but he lost a few tackles I thought he should have won.

Well done LLoydy, my unsung hero of the game. he cant defend, never goes on the over lap and crosses from too deep. 6/10 for yesterday, the assists were ok but obviously a training ground idea from pardew as he doesnt have the footballing brain to think of putting in a low one. May turn out ok if cuts out the errors.

saintmatt Posted 25 October, 2009 Posted 25 October, 2009 im a big fan of lloyd james. ive got respect for any player that takes stick (like he did at the outset of last season) and pulls his performances around. he was most improved player for me last season and, lets not forget, he was playing out of position
St Will Posted 25 October, 2009 Posted 25 October, 2009 As this is an "appreciation" thread, I appreciate that he's doing a pretty good job in a position that is not his natural position. He certainly provides good deliveries and he always gives 100%.

He certainly provides good deliveries and he always gives 100%. That doesn't sound very sincere. I think you're just going through the motions. The only problem I have with Lloyd James is that if he continues to play well, someone will come along and buy him and we will be worse off.

benjii Posted 25 October, 2009 Posted 25 October, 2009 He has improved a lot but I still think he will struggle defensively at times this season and certainly in the CCC. That said, if he continues to contribute heavily to us scoring loads then it's a fair trade-off!
Sour Mash Posted 25 October, 2009 Posted 25 October, 2009 Fair play to the lad, he had a decent game yesterday, we've always known he's a good passer of the ball, but he's still as slow as anything and decent left wingers know it and I think he's poor in the air. I think right back is one of the few areas still very much open to improvement.
wightman35 Posted 25 October, 2009 Posted 25 October, 2009 Im a huge LJ fan, however he might need to work on his deadball crossing, it's definatly not as good as when he has the ball put to him for a cross Please work on your spelling of "definitely." :):) But I thought your post was a good one!
Ian the Red Posted 25 October, 2009 Posted 25 October, 2009 About time someone reccognised LJ! He was brilliant last season and even better this time round!!
Ash Posted 25 October, 2009 Posted 25 October, 2009 We've got Lloyd James! We've got Lloyd Jaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaames! Who needs Ronaldo? We've got Lloyd James.
Saint Fan CaM Posted 26 October, 2009 Posted 26 October, 2009 I think he is getting better and he definately has something to offer in attacks. However, it is noticeable that many of our opponents seem to target our left back position when attacking more often than the other side and I think this is because THEY see it (the lack of pace and strong tackle) as a weakness.
The9 Posted 26 October, 2009 Posted 26 October, 2009 Good delivery for the two asssists on the weekend which make me wonder why most of his crossing hits the first defender. I'm glad he's stopped the stupid sliding tackles from behind which got him booked endlessly last season, though I'm not sure if he's a better centre midfielder given our results when he was there. I can't quite figure out how he's not making either the Wales u-21s for whom he is still eligible for Euro 2012 qualifiers, OR the full squad, when they have so many young players stepping up, and even Ryan Doble is at least on standby. Finally, my missus sprinted towards me with one hand in her coat pocket yesterday, providing a remarkable impression of Lloyd James running.
