rooney Posted 25 October, 2009 Share Posted 25 October, 2009 I enjoyed the game very much.Trotman mom for me, He did not put a foot wrong and sweeps up well after Jaidi. MKD never looked dangerous. Harding had so much room at the back it was unbelievable. The subs turned the game. Antonio with his pace and ability to beat a man and get to the bi line to cross and Connolly for his awareness around the box. James still makes me a little nervous as he seems to stand off his man too much and allows him to turn but he did put in some good crosses today. There were times when our defenders were heading the ball in the air too much instead of trying to head it down but that is nit picking. The Team played well, our manager's tactics were spot on and we are a good team now. Well done Saints.
theyin Posted 25 October, 2009 Share Posted 25 October, 2009 My missus was at her first Saints game today. she reckoned there was too much "head-butting" going on. well she is from down under and is more used to Aussie Rules. she's now up to speed with 'heading' the ball. Great win but when are Saints going to stop giving us scares towards the end of games when we are so on top?
Legod Third Coming Posted 25 October, 2009 Share Posted 25 October, 2009 Been a long time since we have gone behind in a game and I felt 100% confident we would still win it. If that is representative of how MK Dons play then how were they 3rd before today and why was Pardew concerned about their ability to play the ball? The game for me had it all, excitement, atmosphere, frustration (first half), comedy (their goalkeeper / Powell / the left back in the comedy wig) and like most I agree Pardew played a blinder for the critical timing of those subs and it may be a while before we see Papa start a game - all things considered. One final thing how brilliant was Connolly's anticipation and I hope we don't start a home game 4 5 1 for a long time to come as we could have really destroyed this lot had we got forward in numbers first half. Hahahahah. That really was a magnificent barnet. How come we let him get away with it?? And did you notice he also had the first beer belly at SMS this season... teamsaint Posted 25 October, 2009 Share Posted 25 October, 2009 Worth remembering our improvement pretty much coincided with papa playing. Don't think for a minute it is all, or even significantly, down to him - but believe his pace and unorthodox play has helped open things up. I agree. He clearly has his faults, but this is League 1, we won't get many complete players even on our budget. Despite some awful offside stuff, he DID provide some of our best moments in the first half. He needs patience, coaching, and using as and when we need him.
Poshie72 Posted 25 October, 2009 Share Posted 25 October, 2009 My first game of the season, and how impressed was I. Such a vast improvement on the last few seasons. We played attacking football, and kept our heads up even when we went 1 behind. They fought til the final whistle. The saints bug is well and truly back. He is also in the middle scoring or being miles offside. If Antonio can maintain that wide right form he showed this match then he might command a start but for those Waigo detractors let us not forget Antonio is only on a very short term loan at present whereas Papa is here for the season. He seems to be growing in confidence and stature with each game. He even made some classy turns and feints when before clearing the ball which is a sign of a player in top form. We shouldn't underestimate the positive effect that playing alongside a player like Jaidi will be having on him as well. It's a fantastic CB pairing, and long may it stay in place. Clifford Nelson Posted 25 October, 2009 Share Posted 25 October, 2009 Memories are desperately short. Papa actually scored yesterday, although it was ruled out for offside. Similar goal to the two which rescued us against Torquay. Signs of a player with a burning desire to get the ball in the back of the net, and the only one in the squad who naturally gets himself in with a toe poke where all the boots keeps flying. The upswing in our fortunes coincided with two things: Papa playing, which only a few seems to remember, and AP changing the formation to suit the playing staff available. Since Bristol Rovers (with the exception of Torquay) we haven't been able to stop scoring. It's therefore difficult to understand the view that Papa's place now should go to Antonio, who, whilst having a good game as a sub yesterday, hasn't shown himself to have any of Papa's qualities. It is even more difficult to understand the belief in the 4-4-2 system which borders on a religious conviction. We've scored 13 goals in the last 5 league games since changing the system, mind you, two of them by Connelly. Isn't it good enough? Or what laws or morality does it breach? Isn't it British enough? AP should play whatever system he has the players to play in the most effective way, and the rest of us armchair critics should enjoy winning. I was in a perfect position to judge yesterday, when the linesman waved three times for offside when he wasn't. He is so desperately deceptive so he seems to have stolen yards at times, and the lino can't keep up. There were other peculiarities as well when the same lino gave throw ins for Dons and free kicks against Papa, neither of which reflected what had happened. Maybe he was french speaking and understood when he was called a w****r. Nevertheless he didn't have a great game yesterday, but he has had a few to date. Saint Without a Halo Posted 25 October, 2009 Share Posted 25 October, 2009 Fantastic result. derry Posted 25 October, 2009 Share Posted 25 October, 2009 I hope Papa learnt by watching Antonio's performance, and noticed that he was not frightened to knock the ball past the full-back and trust his pace against a turning defender.Papa always seems to get slightly too far ahead of the ball with the midfield players knocking the ball in behind the defender, which in itself is ok providing you start in an on-side position. Waigo made the mistake after about 20 mins of coming off the wing and going narrow, consequently he was unable to come to terms with not being able to see along the defensive line and was offside all the time. It also made him inneffective and the team narrow and inneffective. He and Lambert were both offside about four times during the build up to the disallowed goal. He had just moved out of the offside position and was the next to play the ball which put him offside under the current stupid offside rule. The linesman had his flag up immediately Waigo attacked the ball. Waigo has been the catalyst with his pace and width that has opened up defences since the BR game. If he hadn't been playing we would still be scoring once a game. Antonio provided a satisfactory alternative but I think Waigo will get more goals. Lewington was very unsettled by Waigo when he was wide and made a lot of mistakes and put a lot of balls into touch. Waigo may look awkward, but he gives defences massive problems with his pace and unpredictability. His cross from the byeline early on which was close to being turned in by Lallana was spot on and he can get goals. Interestingly the MKD asst manager made a very telling comment on how to play us, attacking down our flanks. This is still a weakness because of a narrow left midfield and a pedestrian right back. Marino Posted 25 October, 2009 Share Posted 25 October, 2009 It was a tale of two halves alright. I cant remember seeing such a dull uinspiring first 45 minutes when the ball spent all of its time at least 20' in the air. Well done AP for changing things around - Antonio was electric, at the centre of everything going forward and deserves MOM. We sat next to a Reading fan who came down, he said, to watch Antonio especially. He was very impressed and said he would make sure Brendan Rogers knows how well he is playing - dammit. Tom28 Posted 25 October, 2009 Share Posted 25 October, 2009 I agree with most on here saying the subs changed the game but I was so impressed with the midfield three of Wotton, Hammond and Schneiderlin in the first half and then Hammond and Schneiderlin second half. They were at the heart of everything good. Doubt there is a better centre midfield in the league. Hammond looks like a winner-constantly harassing and gee-ing up the team, making them work right to the end and leading by example. Schneiderlin has become the player we all hoped he would have been last year. He's box to box, great in possession (he had 20 thousand people screaming at him to shoot and instead he picked out a great ball to Antonio who dropped it back to James for the cross for the first goal), but the best thing about him that we are seeing more lately and didn't see last season is that he is a lot more physical. He clattered through a couple of players yesterday which was great to see. Those two dominated their centre midfield throughout. Good sign. Also like to note that MK Dons were abysmal. Sunday morning down milbrook rec abysmal. All they had was the long ball and Trotman and man-mountian Jaidi absolutely dominated back there. I absolutely believe 3-1 flattered them. Great stuff. Sour Mash Posted 25 October, 2009 Share Posted 25 October, 2009 (edited) I thought Hammond, Lallana and Lambert were superb yesterday, Lallana's footwork and close control is something most defenders won't ever come across in League One, Lambert does so much unspectacular/unsung work offereing himself as an outlet for defenders when they have the ball, winning it in the air and playing it simple. Papa Waigo was shocking and full marks to Pardew for the substitution, Antonio coming on helped change the game. SNSUN Posted 26 October, 2009 Share Posted 26 October, 2009 I'd love to have been there, but am chuffed about the win. I'm trying not to think about the fact than Trotman, Mellis and Antonio are only loans, all three would be big losses. In Antonio's case, if he keeps playing as well as people say he is, I wouldn't be suprised if Reading took him back. They're struggling, and will need him before long. Great Vibes now - can't see us losing at the minute.

This probably leaves me a lot less critical towards the quality - I'm just happy to be able to see the goals.
