Flying To Oz With Kids

I've done Heathrow to Auckland and back twice, and that's a 1000 miles further per route. The first time I did it with stopovers in Singapore, both out and in. The second time I did it without stopovers, basically because a Boeing 747 had been developed that could go all the way, non-stop. Each time, I did it without kids in tow. I promise you, kids or no kids, it is far easier with a stopover. Even though you may be keen to get there.

I don't know who your carrier may be, but I can thoroughly recommend Singapore Airlines, especially if you have kids, by the way they looked after the other passengers toddlers. Have fun.

It is slightly more expensive but less than BA/Qantas/Virgin but look to book with Emirates on their A380 flights - they have a bit more space (not much) than others - their standard 777's are sardine cans, but you get a 4 course meal on each leg & entertainment is good.

Etihad have wider 777 seats but less legroom than Emirates. (Cathay, BA & Singapore are ok though)

You can also get a deal to have a stop over I think Singapore have one for $1 a night - VERY wise with kids, Dubai is also good for a stop over

Do not under ANY circumstances fly on Gulf Air. Thai & Malaysian are stuck in the 90's on board (while cheaper) & Qatar are also OK

Oh and let me know when you are flying - I'll avoid it - I HATE kids on long haul, especially the overnight legs:-)

You'll be fine with Singapore, Emirates, Ethiad, Gulf and Royal Brunei. Malaysian have some good fares at the mo. Avoid QANTAS and BA like the plague.

You really really really need to take the stopover option.

There you go. Any further advice needed..? ;)

EDIT: Just thought. If you are going to Oz, then the obvious way is going east. If, like me, you went as far as NZ, then going west also became an option. If nowadays, there is an option to go west, don't take it, even if it is better for jet lag. Go east and have that stopover.

The stopover is probably a good idea with very young kids. However, we've just done it with ours at 10 and 7 with only 3 hours at Singapore airport. It was fine (Singapore airlines (btw £410 return), mind you our kids are capable of watching films for 24 hours non stop (with some naps).

This is the third time we've been over with them - when they were younger it was a bit of a nightmare (have memories of them jumping on my head when I was desperate to go to sleep).

The stopover doesn't eradicate jet lag in my view and takes time out of the holiday if you don't have much time.

Long haul I will only ever take Singapore Airlines now, whether it's business or pleasure. Having done the London to Singapore trip many times by many different carriers and routes, SQ is by far the best. There are 3 flights daily out of LHR of which 2 are A380s which I would definitely recommend taking just for the experience and there is more seat/leg room than the 777s, and as for the service/scenery!

Ok I might be a tad bias but I would recommend making a stopover and where better than Singapore lol. If you are going to travel all the way to Australia you might as well take the opportunity to take a short stopover.
