Professor Posted 21 October, 2009 Posted 21 October, 2009 If Lambert, Connolly and Lallana are all on the pitch, who should be the penalty taker? With three proven goal scorers its a great problem to have. Rickie has the job at the moment, but if Connolly begins to play 90 minutes, should the role be shared? Is this something Pardew will have decided beforehand, or do the players decide on the way things are in the game? For example, if someone had scored two goals, would they be given the hatrick chance from the spot, whoever it was?
saints_is_the_south Posted 21 October, 2009 Posted 21 October, 2009 Lambert fo sho, taken every one so far & scored every one, no need to change. Atleast if Lambert isn't on the pitch at the time we have a few other good options for takers.
Danish Saint Posted 21 October, 2009 Posted 21 October, 2009 Agree with the choice of Lambert. If for nothing else, I have a dream of seeing a Saints player as the topscorer of which ever leauge we're playing in for a long time now. As I expect Lambert will score a hatfull, the added goals on penalties is a helping hand to add more to his tally.
Professor Posted 21 October, 2009 Author Posted 21 October, 2009 I don't disagree, but it is Lallana who is currently top scorer with 8 goals against Rickie's 7 and if Adam had been taking the penalties he could be on 11 with Rickie on 4.

ozzmeister Posted 21 October, 2009 Posted 21 October, 2009 Its also nice to know we have a number who are confident at taking penalties should we get into a situation where a penalty shoot out is required (JPT previous round/playoffs should we get there)
Al de Man Posted 21 October, 2009 Posted 21 October, 2009 This should have nothing to do with personal goal tallies. The nominated taker at the start should remain that throughout the match. The only instance when that should change is when a player's confidence is shot after already missing one. I remember when West Ham were leading 2-0 and John Hartson ceded penalty taking duties to Paul Kitson in an attempt to complete his hat-trick. They drew 2-2.
Brussels Saint Posted 21 October, 2009 Posted 21 October, 2009 If he's competent, you want your main goalscorer taking the pens unless there is a specialist in the team. Builds confidence and opposition fear if the main guy has a healthy goals scored record. So Lambo it is. Interestingly, Paul Wotton had a Le Tiss like status down at Plymouth for taking pens, dont think he ever missed one and was their regular taker. Think he has already missed for us though last year!
KK the 2nd Posted 21 October, 2009 Posted 21 October, 2009 I think at the moment it must be Lambert. He is confident and puts them away well. Wooton doesnt play every game but I understand the case for him. Lallana is in great form but I'm not sure I would choose him for this role. I have always felt his shooting is one area I would like to see him develop, particularly shooting more powerfully. Again I accept he is playing wonderfully well at the moment though.
bigchrisy Posted 21 October, 2009 Posted 21 October, 2009 Silly question really. Lambert's penalties have all been perfect so far so why on earth would you change the penalty taker?
SaintDonkey Posted 21 October, 2009 Posted 21 October, 2009 Until he misses a couple then it has to be Lambert. Taking away the duty without reason would just undermine his position and perhaps his confidence. Lallana may have got more goals - but he wouldn't have done without Lambert on the pitch playing out of his skin.

brightspark Posted 21 October, 2009 Posted 21 October, 2009 Who should take our penalties? Surely thats a rhetorical question.

I see on another thread they're trying to "improve" the team for the Championship and the Premier even though we're still at least 2 wins away from quitting the relegation zone of League 1. Stability everywhere is what we need, when we have better then I'm sure it'll float to the top.
eurosaint Posted 21 October, 2009 Posted 21 October, 2009 No brainer ! Has to be Lambo, for the first time since Beattie and Le Tiss, I actually feel confident when get we get a pen that we will actually score! He takes them with power and placement unlike 'scuffer' McGoldrick who gave me the willies every time he stepped up to the spot !!

Belgiansaint Posted 21 October, 2009 Posted 21 October, 2009 It's for AP to decide and if the designated penalty taker doesn't feel confident at that very moment, he himself may decide to give the ball over to someone else who can do the job. I guess it's what happens in most clubs.
paulwantsapint Posted 23 October, 2009 Posted 23 October, 2009 Whoever is confident & willing should take them if Rickie is unable to take them DC or either DH would be able MLT & BT both used the old idea of place pens hard same as Rickie seems to
