Agreed he was a crap manager in the premiership but considering their position there must be a lot of crap managers in the championship including Pearson.

Agreed, the timing appears poor, but it must have been something that Steve Gibson has felt for quite some time. Presumably, in his mind, it was better to do it now, while they are in a good position, to let someone come in and not have to fight them out of a relelgation position.

The reason he was sacked is primarily because The Riverside gates were at an all time low, because the fans disliked the football they were playing at home.[ That is from my

Southgate lacked something to be a top level manager IMO, i think he'd make a good assistant or coach though.
