Margarine got its name from a compound called margaric acid which itself was a combination of stearic acid and palmitic acid.

It was developed in the 19th century as a result of a competition by Napoleon to invent a butter-substitute for the hoi-palloi.

Not really wrong, mate. Margarine (the word) is derived from Oleomargarine (invented by a French bloke for Napoleon as you say) but the important bit is that his product was called Oleomargarine, and was a brand for the butter substitute. Margarine has since become a generic term, but only Oleomargarine should actually be called Margarine, anything else is just a fatty spread.

It was banned for having too much sugar and caffeine I think?? They still do it America and I make sure I get a bottle or two while I'm out there - you're right, it's so good!!

I don't think it was banned, just not successful enough to sustain sales in the UK. I travel to MK regularly where my stepkids live and there is a shop there that still sells it imported from the USA. Link below for mail order.

Mountain Dew - That stuff was amazing

Go down St Marys Street, they sell cans of it in the first shop you come to on the market side of the street, coming from town end.

The Beswick ones weren't in mine, just the bog standard plaster Mallards for us :(, but these were the only ones I could find ;)

Unfortunately we weren't classy :)
