Ponty Posted 21 October, 2009 Share Posted 21 October, 2009 Our survey says...X Margarine got its name from a compound called margaric acid which itself was a combination of stearic acid and palmitic acid. It was developed in the 19th century as a result of a competition by Napoleon to invent a butter-substitute for the hoi-palloi. Not really wrong, mate. Margarine (the word) is derived from Oleomargarine (invented by a French bloke for Napoleon as you say) but the important bit is that his product was called Oleomargarine, and was a brand for the butter substitute. Margarine has since become a generic term, but only Oleomargarine should actually be called Margarine, anything else is just a fatty spread. Gigersaint Posted 21 October, 2009 Share Posted 21 October, 2009 It was banned for having too much sugar and caffeine I think?? They still do it America and I make sure I get a bottle or two while I'm out there - you're right, it's so good!! I don't think it was banned, just not successful enough to sustain sales in the UK. I travel to MK regularly where my stepkids live and there is a shop there that still sells it imported from the USA.
