I know its slightly off topic but I went to the famous game at sellhurst to watch Wimbledon where they only got 63 fans in the whole ground! I only lived around the corner and couldnt get back for the Saints game so decided to go! Woohoo what an atmosphere!

This could end up like that Monty Python sketch......

'Right. I was at a match once between Melchester Rovers and Grimethorpe United when I was the only person there, and I left after one minute'.

Great post and great thread. One slight query though, would fans have really travelled in those sort of numbers back in the late 40s? Would that many have had the finances to do so and was there really the culture of travelling hours to follow ones team?

Well I asked myself the same question.

Dad said that there were dozens of coaches going up and lots more by train.

The prev. seasons (Spurs) fixture got only around 29,000 fans.

As both teams were in the running for promotion, you could expect larger crowds but I find it hard to think that Spurs could have "found" 40,000 new fans in a season. It does seem certain that Saints had a big following and very few Dell games that season had less than 24,000 and there were half a dozen up around 28-29,000 plus the famous 30856 (v.WBA) and which was still a ground record over 20 years later.

I was at Middlesbrough when we went top of the league for the first time (Keegan scored) in the early Eighties and there was only around 150 there - an exclusive crowd for a special occasion.

i was there with 2 mates, one of whom is no longer with us, what a sh*t hole Ayresome park was, and Middlesboro women are harder than skate blokes.

I was there for that.

Christ it was a bitterly cold day on the terrace, but well worth it.

Guess it'd be impossible to ever know anyway, but I've always been under the impression that London crowds in particular in those days would shift around a bit depending on where there would be a decent game.
