exit2 Posted 11 September, 2008 Share Posted 11 September, 2008 With all the stuff in the news about fuel costs etc, out of interest how much do you pay per month for gas and electric. We have 4 adults and a toddler in our house and we have no gas, so every thing is electric. My monthly bill for electric is £130 per month
EastleighSoulBoy Posted 11 September, 2008 Share Posted 11 September, 2008 Two adults, two early teens and a seven year old here. We pay £70 for Electric, 5 PCs, TV and games console nearly always being used. £27 for Gas, that includes cooking and heating. Very rarely run the heating for longer than 30 mins a day ( Oct to May ) as the house is 3 years old and insulated to the nth degree.

Minsk Posted 11 September, 2008 Share Posted 11 September, 2008 Two adults and a four year old in my household. I pay around 25 quid per month for everything: electric, gas, water, rates, etc. Broken down it is about 7.50 for electric and around a fiver for gas. Guest Hacienda Posted 11 September, 2008 Share Posted 11 September, 2008 We've 2 adults and 3 kids aged 6, 3 & 1. Our DDs are £65 for electric and £50 for gas but at the moment we are in credit for the gas as it's hardly been used since March/April. The boiler only comes on for 30 mins in the morning and 30 mins of an evening for hot water. Heating will be programmed for 06.00 to 8.00 and from 16.00 to 21.00 but we've yet to use it tis year. However, as we also have solid fuel fires in two of the downstairs rooms they will be used an awful lot more thus cutting down on the gas.
bridge too far Posted 11 September, 2008 Share Posted 11 September, 2008 We have to have our boiler on 24 hours a day (only for hot water ATM because the heating is controlled by a thermostat in the hall). With Mr TF's day/night shifts, we'd be forever changing the clock on the boiler or over-riding it if we didn't have it on all the time. It doesn't seem to be any more expensive our way (comparing our costs to most others on here). However, we never have the radiator on in our bedroom - even in the depths of winter - or in the kitchen and they're turned right down in the guest bedrooms. And we have a fire in the sitting room that's usually enough unless it's very, very cold.

As informed by my plumber it is actually more effective to have the hot water on 24/7 as it costs more to heat it up again if you have had the water off during the average working day. My dd's are electric £57pm and Gas £28 pm 1 adult, (sometimes 2 )and 3 kids in the household

Block 18 Posted 11 September, 2008 Share Posted 11 September, 2008 I'm going to unashamedly plug the fact that having your boiler serviced annually not only helps to keep it running safely, but can also assist in cutting gas bills. If you need a good servicing PM me, and I will be happy to assist:rolleyes:
OLYMPIC Posted 12 September, 2008 Share Posted 12 September, 2008 I am just looking at renting a two bed cottage out in the country but it has oil fired heating does anyone have any experience of how expensive this is to run?

Barney Trubble Posted 12 September, 2008 Share Posted 12 September, 2008 Single, Gas and Electric is currently £50 a month for both. They are both in credit but once I start using the gas again then no doubt i'll need to increase the DD for Gas. I work office hours and at home just evenings and most weekends, some Saturdays I am out most of the day too. When I have the Gas on I only heat the rooms i'm using by using the TRV's and that is the only use of Gas as my cooker is Electric. The only electric that is runnning permanent is for the house alarm, Fridge/freezer, cordless telephone. I suppose the combi boiler is switched on but not programmed to come on, but the hot water is readily available, if needed.
Special K Posted 12 September, 2008 Share Posted 12 September, 2008 I refuse to pay for my gas and electric with direct debit. To me, it's effectively a way of the utility companies building up a potentially large amount of your money against future use of something that you may or may not use. ******** to that. My money is my money and i want it in my account, not some bastard utility company that can earn mega interest on it whilst putting up prices all the time. That said, last years combined gas and electric bills were under £775 for a 3 bed house with 2 adults and 2 kids of 7 and 3.
mynameisthehulk Posted 12 September, 2008 Share Posted 12 September, 2008 I love the way people are talking about how many PCs and consoles they have when in the big scheme of things these use very little electricity, would be more relevant to talk about how many loads of washing you do per week and if you have any electrical heating appliances. I pay £17 per month for Electricity and my Gas heating is included in the rent, this is for 1 person in a 1 bed flat. I capped my electricity prices in early 2005, they are capped until 2010. My primary rate is 12.5p per kWh and secondary is 6.25p, have a look at your bills and see if you can beat that. If you arent on a capped rate, there are some decent fixed price or capped price offers around at the moment. Cap for the longest possible period as there is only one way the prices are going to go. A little known fact is that the retail side of all energy companies is a loss making excercise, profit comes from other areas. Costs are increasing and therefore prices will continue to increase. Oh and to the person who is in credit on there gas, you should be at this time of year as your direct debit is calculated as 1/12 of your annual spend, therefore your usage will be higher than your payments during the winter months, offset against the credit. Any guesses as to what business I am in>?

If you pay by direct debit you can get discounts of around 10%, do you get that much interest in your current account?
saintwarwick Posted 12 September, 2008 Share Posted 12 September, 2008 Currently pay £92 per month for electricity in a three bedroom home, no gas in our home. Currently two adults with a third (daughter) stopping occasionally. We have reduced our washing from seven times a week (early morning economy seven) to three times a week. We have also removed a few light bulbs in strategic locations to reduce the Blackpool illumination effect when our daughter stays over.
