Professor Posted 18 October, 2009 Posted 18 October, 2009 Connolly's goal against Oldham was taken brilliantly, buried in the back of the net with such power that the keeper had no chance at all, in fact, just what you would expect from an international class striker. After 18 months out of the game the injury and fitness doubts are inevitable but as he gets the games under his belt and confidence in his fitness grows, he must be a regular in the starting line up. Brilliant signing. The biggest problem for the team may soon be - who takes the penalties? - Lambert or Connolly! You can see the Saints' goals and Connolly's strike on BBC iPlayer - The Football League Show 17Oct 11.45 with the game at 49 minutes into the programme. http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00nfpkf/The_Football_League_Show_2009_2010_17_10_2009/
Windmill Arm 2 Posted 18 October, 2009 Posted 18 October, 2009 Bloody Brilliant!!! Morgan needs a kick up the *rse though.
Stud mark of doom Posted 18 October, 2009 Posted 18 October, 2009 I've watched it four times and I still think he's going to put it in the other corner - class.
Andy_Porter Posted 18 October, 2009 Posted 18 October, 2009 That miss from Schneiderlin was even worse than I remembered. If Oldham had gotten in back to 2-2 he'd have gotten a bollocking after the game. All he had to do was pass it into the net.
Under Weststand Posted 18 October, 2009 Posted 18 October, 2009 Could well be the signing of the season, lets hope he can stay fit. If he does we will have the best strike force in league-1. Lambert & Connolly scoring for fun just makes you smile with anticipation
CB Fry Posted 18 October, 2009 Posted 18 October, 2009 As soon as he came on he looked far to good for this division. If Him and lambert click (It looked like they will) then a) we'll be awesome and b) hello 442 old friend.
NickG Posted 18 October, 2009 Posted 18 October, 2009 I've watched it four times and I still think he's going to put it in the other corner - class. exactly my thoughts - calm and class
View From The Top Posted 18 October, 2009 Posted 18 October, 2009 From the angle we were in the stand we watched him shape to put it in the bottom right and then crack it in high left. The look of relief and pure pleasure on his face summed it up.
JustMike Posted 18 October, 2009 Posted 18 October, 2009 class finish from a class player. Morgan, oh dear. But another 3 points none the less coyrs, cant wait for the next game now :-)
SaintRobbie Posted 18 October, 2009 Posted 18 October, 2009 Just goes to show what can happen and who you can attract when you have a quality and respected professional manager.
chrisobee Posted 18 October, 2009 Posted 18 October, 2009 When you see PL strikers missing even easier chances than the one MS missed I'm prepared to cut a little slack to a 19 year old who I believe is a very good player. Maybe watching the likes of Lambert and Connolly will show him how it should be done, he has the skill but just needed more composure in this instance.
Mr Saints Posted 18 October, 2009 Posted 18 October, 2009 It was a Premiership finish, fantastic composure considering he hasn't played a competitive game for over a year.
Fan The Flames Posted 18 October, 2009 Posted 18 October, 2009 Sound like Kevin Phillips debut againts Leicester, hope it doesn't end up the same.
Saint_Jonny Posted 18 October, 2009 Posted 18 October, 2009 He looks the sort of player we all hated playing against in the championship and im delighted we've got hold of him. After seeing our great display yesterday ive decided to make the 500 miles round trip to st.marys next week. COYS
Asaint4ever Posted 18 October, 2009 Posted 18 October, 2009 He looks very quick and alive! him and lambert up front WOW! ive never felt so happy with our squad in years! lets just keep it up and get out of the bottom coys!
lumpofshipperley Posted 18 October, 2009 Posted 18 October, 2009 Just goes to show what can happen and who you can attract when you have a quality and respected professional manager. That's true, but also bundles of money helps too. Just saw the goal on iplayer - he should always score, but he sells the keeper an absolute kipper. In fact I bought 2 off him as well.
Glasgow_Saint Posted 18 October, 2009 Posted 18 October, 2009 Wonder why QPR didnt sign him after his trial and why no other CCC club came knocking?
Fergie Posted 18 October, 2009 Posted 18 October, 2009 Got a mate at uni who is a Leeds fan, he says "its all about the 2b's, Bechio and Beckford" Not in my opinion, the partnership of Lambert and Connolly would be good enough for a top 6 chamionship team i feel. The way pards has worked with Lambert and made him a better all round player and if pards can get Connolly fully fit and injury free then play-offs are a serious thought, if not automatic promotion if the boys at the back can get it together for sure. Trotman...what happens to him? will be sign him or will someone else bigger and better come in!?? Could well make or break the promotion push, him and jaidi are a massive partnership for us!
paulwantsapint Posted 18 October, 2009 Posted 18 October, 2009 Even if DC cant get fit enough to play 90 mins will be a great impact sub to rescue or make sure of the points sort of win win for him be a hero or be able to say to little to late If he can stay fit should look at 15 goals
S-Clarke Posted 18 October, 2009 Posted 18 October, 2009 That finish was real class - his first chance too, not a bad ratio! One of the things that i've noticed in this league is how slow players minds are. If you can get someone like Connolly fit and confident, his awareness and footballing brain will be enough to fool most opposition.
Gudz Posted 18 October, 2009 Posted 18 October, 2009 For me Jaidi was the shrewdest signing, but Lambert & connolly up front? League One beware! That is all.
Trumush Posted 18 October, 2009 Posted 18 October, 2009 Agree that the impact sub might be the way to go with Connolly, given his injury problems. He could get 15 goals a season coming off the bench !!!
Bailey Posted 18 October, 2009 Posted 18 October, 2009 Top-draw finish from Connolly, he could turn out to be a first-class signing for us if he can keep himself fit. Lambert and Connolly in attack is potentially one of the best strike forces in this division.
Saint Bones Posted 18 October, 2009 Posted 18 October, 2009 So what happens to lallana ? Is he playing a forward role at the moment with Lambert leading the attack ?
sussexsaint Posted 18 October, 2009 Posted 18 October, 2009 lol at morgans miss... Indeed, comedy value , but only as we won
Saint_Jonny Posted 18 October, 2009 Posted 18 October, 2009 So what happens to lallana ? Is he playing a forward role at the moment with Lambert leading the attack ? 4-5-1 when defending 4-4-1-1 when attacking is how I saw it yesterday
sadoldgit Posted 18 October, 2009 Posted 18 October, 2009 Just goes to show what can happen and who you can attract when you have a quality and respected professional manager. And when you have the cash in the bank to do the above
alpine_saint Posted 18 October, 2009 Posted 18 October, 2009 And when you have the cash in the bank to do the above Here he goes........
brightspark Posted 18 October, 2009 Posted 18 October, 2009 However good Connolly is I honestly think we should keep him on the bench to be an impact player. Why? Well I think that our current system of 4-3-2-1 works a treat with Waigo and Lallana working those wings. If both of them stay fit we should keep playing this formation. Being able to master a Plan B is a huge boost for us when we are struggling against a decent tactical defensive unit. So then we can shift Connolly on and play a 4-4-2, giving us a new and equally terrifying dynamic. Giving him short stints also reduces his risk of getting injured. Keep it as it is Pardew!!!

Totally agree,no point changing something that is still working for us,Connolly is a great asset coming off the bench when all else goes tits up.
fareham saint phil Posted 18 October, 2009 Posted 18 October, 2009 Connolly has a point to prove to a few managers and seems keen to do just that, if he keeps fit then we will have a awesome forward line. I'm sure no one would want to be playing us at the moment. As for his goal, he sent me the wrong way watching it!!! and not a beach ball in sight
Mr X Posted 18 October, 2009 Posted 18 October, 2009 Wonder why QPR didnt sign him after his trial and why no other CCC club came knocking? His injury record is pretty bad, its a gamble.....
shurlock Posted 18 October, 2009 Posted 18 October, 2009 Not the first time he's cut in from the left Is he a naturally left-sided player or does he run both channels? Yesterday, he seemed to hug the left touchline alot.
offix Posted 18 October, 2009 Posted 18 October, 2009 Jaidi, Hammond, Connolly, Lambert, even Pappa - What great insight and ability to recruit the right guys for the right positions AP has!
merrimd Posted 18 October, 2009 Posted 18 October, 2009 Jaidi, Hammond, Connolly, Lambert, even Pappa - What great insight and ability to recruit the right guys for the right positions AP has! And Harding perhaps?
St Will Posted 18 October, 2009 Posted 18 October, 2009 And Harding perhaps? Absolutely! No perhaps about it!
offix Posted 18 October, 2009 Posted 18 October, 2009 And Harding perhaps? Yes, you are right. He's really put together a very good "spine" to the team, which should give us a pretty good consistency of performance this season
SamKimish Posted 18 October, 2009 Posted 18 October, 2009 Stunning finish, there's not a keeper in this division (Kelvin included) that could save that.
RonManager Posted 18 October, 2009 Posted 18 October, 2009 Stunning finish, there's not a keeper in this division (Kelvin included) that could save that. I'd have dropped the old cap on it no problem

Disagree Connolly to start Waigo on bench keep it 442
St Will Posted 18 October, 2009 Posted 18 October, 2009 Disagree Connolly to start Waigo on bench keep it 442 Disagree, Connolly probably not 100% fit, and would be wrong to change a winning formula. Same team, same formation, change it in the same way if and when we need to.
Arizona Posted 18 October, 2009 Posted 18 October, 2009 Brilliantly executed. Absolute class. Have to say though, Morgan's miss was worse than I remember it any what was James doing for their goal. Looked absolutely pedestrian jogging back. If I was an Oldham fan I'd be fuming at their defensive offering though.
Flyer Posted 18 October, 2009 Posted 18 October, 2009 Wonder why QPR didnt sign him after his trial and why no other CCC club came knocking? Because he was terrible, I saw him at Aldershot and theres no way he was CCC material and he hasnt played a lot in the last 3 seasons.
Wildgoose Posted 18 October, 2009 Posted 18 October, 2009 Absolute Class! Even had me thinking the ball was going the other way just watching the replay!!!!! Hopefully many more to come!
Wildgoose Posted 18 October, 2009 Posted 18 October, 2009 Connolly has a point to prove to a few managers and seems keen to do just that, if he keeps fit then we will have a awesome forward line. I couldn't believe it affected you the same way....thought it was only me! I tried to post early this morning but had run out of freebies!
hypochondriac Posted 18 October, 2009 Posted 18 October, 2009 Because he was terrible, I saw him at Aldershot and theres no way he was CCC material and he hasnt played a lot in the last 3 seasons. We shall see...
Fergie Posted 18 October, 2009 Posted 18 October, 2009 Because he was terrible, I saw him at Aldershot and theres no way he was CCC material and he hasnt played a lot in the last 3 seasons. Yeah maybe but going on what he's done so far and he's probably only good for 60 mins max right now he's doing alright for himself. scores in the reserves and then comes off the bench and scores for the first team and wins us the game! Going on the above evidence he for sure isn't terrible, if anything we will, when he is fit, will switch to a 4-4-2 and he will, if he stays fit, along with Lambert score lots of goals. Pards said a couple weeks ago that he needs a striker who can finish and one who would be the main striker so Lambert can play in his familiar role as he did for Bristol Rovers. Cannolly will soon be our goal scorer and Lambert will be the 'Large' from the 'little and large' partnership! Pards already said this about 2 weeks ago!!
