saintwarwick Posted 21 October, 2009 Posted 21 October, 2009 Hmm i'm kinda worried MK Dons will prove a very tough test actually. They really don't concede many goals at all. We've gotta hit them early and let 'em know who's in charge right from the off. Not exactly scoring for fun either unlike us.
saintwarwick Posted 21 October, 2009 Posted 21 October, 2009 They have Darren 'china legs' Powell in their defence. We have a great chance to win. Well all we gotta do then is pump the ball in his direction because he sure hell can't defend or head the ball except upwards.
NickG Posted 21 October, 2009 Author Posted 21 October, 2009 Connolly played in behind closed door reserve game yesterday - although AP has made comments about not changing winning team, wonder if going to start seeing him earlier in game
Sour Mash Posted 21 October, 2009 Posted 21 October, 2009 My comment about their pitiful fanbase was followed up (in the same sentence) with the line "they would have gone out of business anyway". It's not a personal judgment about how small I think their fanbase is, its economics. So AFC Wimbledon would have had to have been formed anyway. Milton Keynes deserves a mid ranking second-third tier football club and "deserve" to be in the league as much as Everton, Arsenal, Burnley, Southampton and pretty much every other club in the country who never ever got promoted into the football league, just selected by greasing the right palms or slapping the right backs in the smoke filled rooms at the turn of the century. But do I like them because the amount of po-faced holier than thou preaching I read and hear against them. Oh yes, Oh yes I do. 10,000 fans, a great chairman investing in the team and backing his managers, a promotion and a trophy win - one more promotion than Arsenal have ever ever achieved - and a community united behind a football club. Isn't that what football is supposed to be about? Milton Keynes doesn't "deserve" any sort of club. If another town or city was to suddenly grow, would they then also deserve a certain size club? You can't compare the way MK Dons entered the league with the way teams originally entered over one hundred years ago, it's a completely different situation. And you don't know that Wimbledon would have gone bust at all. I just find it very, very weird why anyone would "like" MK Dons, unless you're just enjoying a wind up.

We've gotta hit them early and let 'em know who's in charge right from the off. Before the Oldham game most of their fans were saying "our defence is solid at the mo, Charlton failed to really break through so I can't see Saints doing it".
Saint_clark Posted 21 October, 2009 Posted 21 October, 2009 They've got big darren powell at the heart of their defense! so let's get in there with a few weak tackles, and he'll be off We've got it in the bag.
Dr Who? Posted 21 October, 2009 Posted 21 October, 2009 MK Dons will not make the playoffs this season. They were a better team last year. It looks on paper like they are really good having only lost 1 away game, but they have played, Tranmere, Brighton, Wycombe, and Exeter, all there wins. Drawn at Swindon, and there only loss on the road has come at Oldham. I think it will be a tough game, but I also think that this will be there hardest away game of the season so far!!
Fan The Flames Posted 21 October, 2009 Posted 21 October, 2009 My comment about their pitiful fanbase was followed up (in the same sentence) with the line "they would have gone out of business anyway". Isn't that what football is supposed to be about? Wimbledon were a small club whose attendance rose when they got into the top flight and dropped back of when they went down, just like it does with any club, witness the fall in Middlesboroughs attendance. Their attendance fell back to pre top flight figures and more than MK are getting now. So to say they were deserting and to extrapolate that to going bust is playing loose with the stats. No one knows if they would have gone bust, but if they had there are far more deserving clubs that have been knocking on the door for years, Kettering, Woking, Burton and some of them new towns that got their act together, formed and supported clubs. What have the citizens of MK been doing for 50 years, they have had plenty of time to realise what you think they deserve. Things were closed shop for years in football but that changed years ago and now there is a perfectly legitimate way of moving up and becoming a league side. Stealing a team is plainly wrong and I cant understand anyone outside of MK not seeing that.

And you don't know that Wimbledon would have gone bust at all. I just find it very, very weird why anyone would "like" MK Dons, unless you're just enjoying a wind up. I like them because they have a great stadium, a solid fanbase, a great chairman, a policy of blooding good young managers, they've produced Premier League players already, they've enjoyed success already and their promotion a couple of years ago means they justify their place in the league, one more promotion than Arsenal have ever achieved as I said before. And I like them because so many people froth at the mouth about what an outrage it is, when it is nothing of the sort. The day you lot all volunteer Saints to start at the bottom of the football pyramid and earn their place in the league rather than just be selected to be in it is the day I'll listen to your whinging about MK Dons. I'm not on a wind up, I just think they are an excellent example of a well run club and that is worth highlighting rather than this "Franchise FC" claptrap churned out by the mini-Scargill Anorak uberfans. Get over it.
Big John Posted 21 October, 2009 Posted 21 October, 2009 I'm almost 100% sure, after listening to a piece on AFC Wimbledon a few weeks ago, that they hold the honors of the ''old'' Wimbledon. ''In October 2006, an agreement was reached between Milton Keynes Dons F.C., the MK Dons Supporters Association, the Wimbledon Independent Supporters Association and the Football Supporters Federation. The replica of the FA Cup plus all club patrimony gathered under the name of Wimbledon F.C. would be returned to the London Borough of Merton. Ownership of trademarks and website domain names related to Wimbledon F.C. would also be transferred to the Borough. It was also agreed that any reference made to Milton Keynes Dons F.C. should refer only to events after 7 August 2004,'' Sounds like The Hamster is right then. How insulting to genuine supporters of genuine clubs, that the very foundations of the club that they took over, meant absolutely nothing to them. They should be ashamed. And just as Welsh teams should not be a part of the English football scene, neither should in my opinion, the MK Dons.

They didn't do it of their own accord, let's say they were persuaded by the footballing authorities and due legal process.
saints triumph Posted 21 October, 2009 Posted 21 October, 2009 hmmm anyone got the odds on southampton to be promoted??? must still be massive outsiders, good value based on the optimism on this forum!!! I put £10 on for auto promotion at 25/1 and another £20 on promotion via play offs at 8/1 at the start of the season. What a waste of money, or is it?
Thedelldays Posted 21 October, 2009 Posted 21 October, 2009 Feck me. Talk about holier than fecking thou preaching here.
Big John Posted 21 October, 2009 Posted 21 October, 2009 Feck me. Talk about holier than fecking thou preaching here. So, you would have been fine with Marcus shipping us up the road to Micheldever chenging our colours, badge, and name then would you dd? It's not 'holier than though' it's just opinion, and I am sure that you too hold strong opinions on certain subjects too. What for example is your opinion on female managers of Football League teams? Or female's taking up any other traditionally male roles? Why are you so quick to dismiss others valid opinions with silly comments like that. What is your view on the MK Dons existing in the same arena as Saints? Is it fair, do you care?

And get relegated to league 1 we get a billionaire owner and spend our was up the league. Ask Stockport or Exeter or Yeovil if that was fair? Who really cares about MK Dons. Things have changed I'm football in the past and will again. Those who are moaning on here are sounding like dinosaurs to be honest
Saint_clark Posted 21 October, 2009 Posted 21 October, 2009 To be honest, i'm surprised we don't see the Dons situation happening more often what with there being plenty of multi billionaires looking for a play thing.
krissyboy31 Posted 21 October, 2009 Posted 21 October, 2009 To be honest, i'm surprised we don't see the Dons situation happening more often what with there being plenty of multi billionaires looking for a play thing. Give it time. We are not too far away from America style franchises. I can certainly see small town teams going semi-professional/minor league and the main leagues (may be Premier Leagues 1 and 2) being made up of teams representing the countries bigger cities.
Gordon Mockles Posted 21 October, 2009 Posted 21 October, 2009 (edited) I put £10 on for auto promotion at 25/1 and another £20 on promotion via play offs at 8/1 at the start of the season. What a waste of money, or is it? Paddy Power had Saints at 10/1 for promotion. I also registered on Bet365 last night & had a dabble with the in-game betting feature (cos of free bet promotion) but made a fortunate mistake. It confused me slightly & I put down too much money. I had Lyon to win 2-1 as I felt it could go either way. Instead of betting once, I made the same bet 3 times (i thought I needed to confirm it which I had done for £5, £5 & £10 @ 7/1). £150 later, what a lucky mistake to make!! About time I had some good luck! GTFI! Also did a 2-1 Saints or 3-2 with Lallana/Lambert to score first consecutively. Edited 21 October, 2009 by Gordon Mockles
Fan The Flames Posted 21 October, 2009 Posted 21 October, 2009 one more promotion than Arsenal have ever achieved as I said before. The day you lot all volunteer Saints to start at the bottom of the football pyramid and earn their place in the league rather than just be selected to be in it is the day I'll listen to your whinging about MK Dons. You really are clueless, Arsenal have been promoted twice, once dubiously, so they have some in common with MK. Also Southampton did start at the bottom playing locally, then in the Southern League and in the Third Division we were not given a place 5 division above where we should be. It took us 40 years to get to the top flight so we've done our time.
hamster Posted 22 October, 2009 Posted 22 October, 2009 Anyway, when are we due to play them at their shed then? I might go to that one, maybe not though.
CB Fry Posted 22 October, 2009 Posted 22 October, 2009 (edited) So, you would have been fine with Marcus shipping us up the road to Micheldever chenging our colours, badge, and name then would you dd? But that scenario is never, ever going to happen. Just like it won't happen to Sheffield Wednesday, or Leicester City or even Yeovil*. Wimbledon had a handful of "fans" who couldn't be arsed to see their beloved team because their current ground was five whole miles further away than their old ground. In London, the city with the best public transport links in the country. They only came out of the woodwork to support AFC Wimbledon when it looked like a fashionable cause celebre and they saw a bandwagon to jump on. Any genuine Wimbledon fans then what happened was a shame for them, but its not like they don't have a new club to support now anyway. Edited 22 October, 2009 by CB Fry I know the League/FA won't allow it, but even if they did it just wouldn't happen.

Legod Third Coming Posted 22 October, 2009 Posted 22 October, 2009 As this is Saints we are on about, who have been on a good run and we are expecting a decent sized crowd, we'll lose. DOWN NEGATIVE MAN DOWN! This is exactly the attitude that must be eradicated from this football club. The eternal pessism of the Saints fan must be replaced by a relentless confidence - the confidence to dig deep in tricky situations and set a standard of performance to which the TEAM aspire. To be winners, requires a winners' mindset. This is not the Southampton you were looking for, this is the NEW Southampton - brighter, bolder, more daring, more positive, more dependable. Yes, we're still a work in progress, but not losers, not any more. That mantle has gone. If this team let you down on Saturday, give them merry hell. Because we are not underdogs anymore, we're the Real Madrid of League One, and it's about time we lived up to our billing!!!! I am confident we will.
krissyboy31 Posted 22 October, 2009 Posted 22 October, 2009 we're the Real Madrid of League One, and it's about time we lived up to our billing!!!! They lost at home to some no-mark team in the CL, during the week!

Having seen Real Madrid's defending last night v Milan I think you are being most unfair to liken us to them ! But I know where your coming from we are along with Leeds, Norwich and possibly Charlton the teams to beat in this league and everybody seems to raise their game against us, but at the moment we are handling it well. Certainly with the team we have at the moment we shouldn't fear anyone in this league, we are making steady progress, and a win in front of a big crowd on Saturday would be yet another step in the right direction.
RedAndWhite91 Posted 22 October, 2009 Posted 22 October, 2009 we're the Real Madrid of League One, and it's about time we lived up to our billing!!!! I am confident we will. I for one don't want us to be known as a BBB as the Leyton Orient fans have been calling us - Bertie Big B0ll0cks or something - This is a close and a tough league, every team is capable of beating everyone else and we shouldn't rest on our laurels too much. Saying that, we do have one of the best first 11's in the league, so we should do alright

Nick65 Posted 22 October, 2009 Posted 22 October, 2009 I give up Quite. It's interesting that the decision to allow the existence of 'Milton Keynes Dons' was announced on the day before the start of the 2002 World Cup, when no-one was taking any notice. Also that Wimbledon had no right of appeal and that it wouldn't be allowed to happen again, because the FL didn't want to create a precedent. In my book that adds up to Wimbledon being shafted. Nothing against Milton Keynes, but how come it suddenly gained a Championship football team from when everyone else has to start from scratch? Wimbleon didn't get a lot of fans, but neither do the likes of Leyton Orient or Oldham (to mention 2 teams we're playing or have played this month) and I hope no-one thinks they don't 'deserve' a team. Anyway, average gates of under 10,000 with a population of 185,000 isn't exactly brilliant.
