waggy Posted 16 October, 2009 Posted 16 October, 2009 Time for some more 'creative' poll rigging folks. Antii Niemi & Brucie are there. http://www.sport.co.uk/news/Football/28505/Weekend_Debate_Who_is_the_greatest_ever_Premier_League_goalkeeper.aspx
SaintDonkey Posted 16 October, 2009 Posted 16 October, 2009 Schmeichel by a country mile....... Yes he was but this is about vote rigging not reality! Come on lads Antii's lagging in 6th behind Nevillle Southall at the moment. We can't have the Evertonians being better vote riggers than us now can we!
Pancake Posted 16 October, 2009 Posted 16 October, 2009 Ah, the ol' "who is the grteatest" debate again...
Wes Tender Posted 16 October, 2009 Posted 16 October, 2009 Schmeichel by a country mile....... This will be the same Schmeichel who conceded 5 goals to Newcastle on 16.10.96, then 6 to us on 26.10.96, 1 to Fenerbahce on 30.10.96 and another 2 to Chelsea on 2.11.96. Four losses on the trot and 14 goals conceded in 4 matches, 11 in 2. How many Premiership goalkeepers shipped 11 goals in two matches? I can't think of any.
Harry Faz Posted 16 October, 2009 Posted 16 October, 2009 maybe true - but he was still the best wasnt he?

Wes Tender Posted 16 October, 2009 Posted 16 October, 2009 maybe true - but he was still the best wasnt he? He certainly was a good keeper, but perhaps the defence in front of him made him look better than he was (apart from those matches I mentioned). Whether he would have looked quite so good with our defence in front of him is debateable.

Taibi then.
Hatch Posted 16 October, 2009 Posted 16 October, 2009 13 years a go today, fact fans. Wasn't even born then.
Mr Sparky Posted 16 October, 2009 Posted 16 October, 2009 I remember him in goal versus Man City at St Marys a few years back, We won 2-0 but for him it could have been 8 or 9. In my opinion of course
Pancake Posted 16 October, 2009 Posted 16 October, 2009 Wasn't even born then. You must have had a hard life then Hatch.
RinNY Posted 16 October, 2009 Posted 16 October, 2009 Has to be Seaman, unless you include the Division One days, which is the same as the Prem after all, just a different name. If you do that, the answer is obvious: Gordon Banks, the greatest goalie of all time, anywhere.
mikec Posted 16 October, 2009 Posted 16 October, 2009 Matt Le Tissier (for the Benali testimonial game)
Windmill Arm 2 Posted 16 October, 2009 Posted 16 October, 2009 Has to be Peter Schmeichel, nobody else comes close.
once_bitterne Posted 16 October, 2009 Posted 16 October, 2009 He certainly was a good keeper, but perhaps the defence in front of him made him look better than he was (apart from those matches I mentioned). Whether he would have looked quite so good with our defence in front of him is debateable. I think it is actually the opposite of that. Far from the defence making him look good, the most noticeable aspect of Schmiechel's keeping that he was immense in a one on one situation. If a striker was bearing down on goal with just him to beat, even one of the best of the time like Fowler, you actually felt it more likely that he would make the save than the striker scoring.
Gemmel Posted 16 October, 2009 Posted 16 October, 2009 How many Premiership goalkeepers shipped 11 goals in two matches? I can't think of any. Keith Granger (Not Premiership, but old Div 1) Where is he now.....Ouch, What was the straw that broke the camels back sending us into administration.... Ouch
The9 Posted 16 October, 2009 Posted 16 October, 2009 Statistically I'd go for Brad Friedel on saves to shots ratio. Yawn.

If a striker was bearing down on goal with just him to beat, even one of the best of the time like Fowler, you actually felt it more likely that he would make the save than the striker scoring. That was also one of Niemi's strengths too. And Southall was hard to beat one on one too.
SaintDonkey Posted 16 October, 2009 Posted 16 October, 2009 Forget the debate and back to the vote rigging already! Antii's overtaken Southall, the next target is Shay Given.
Dimond Geezer Posted 16 October, 2009 Posted 16 October, 2009 Should be Schmeichel, but I've done my duty and voted for Niemi. As for the greatest ever, I never saw Banks play (apart from the Pele save) so I can't comment on him, so for me it has to be Shilts. As a young goalie myself, he was my hero, how chuffed was I when he turned up at Saints. :smt038
(not THE) Kevin Moore Posted 16 October, 2009 Posted 16 October, 2009 Statistically I'd go for Brad Friedel on saves to shots ratio. Yawn. Always hated playing Blackburn for that reason, he seemed to be unbeatable against us. I'd go with Schmeichel.... with Niemi a close second. FACT (although Schwarzer also seemed to have a good game against us)
Northam Girls Posted 16 October, 2009 Posted 16 October, 2009 Time for some more 'creative' poll rigging folks. Antii Niemi & Brucie are there. http://www.sport.co.uk/news/Football/28505/Weekend_Debate_Who_is_the_greatest_ever_Premier_League_goalkeeper.aspx Pat Jennings - but I'm an old bat lol
Ash Posted 16 October, 2009 Posted 16 October, 2009 Come on lads Antii's lagging in 6th behind Nevillle Southall at the moment. We can't have the Evertonians being better vote riggers than us now can we! I am a fan of Niemi and that but Southall was a cracking keeper. I am not sure if this is still the case but at one stage he was the only goalkeeper to win the PFA player of the year. In addition to this he never used to use the showers at the ground and would go home wearing his kit, often stopping off at the shops or filling up his car still with his shorts and jersey on. Niemi shouldn't feel too hard done by for lagging behind Big Nev.
bpsaint Posted 16 October, 2009 Posted 16 October, 2009 I remember him in goal versus Man City at St Marys a few years back, We won 2-0 but for him it could have been 8 or 9. In my opinion of course I'm with you on that one, that whole first half was a personal battle between him and Ormerod. Shame Paul Jones isn't in that list of keepers, wasn't the greatest but better than a good few of the ones on there.
alpine_saint Posted 16 October, 2009 Posted 16 October, 2009 Mark Crossley has a fair shout, imo. Played some big games, and the only goalie ever to save an MLT peno.
alki_in_korea Posted 16 October, 2009 Posted 16 October, 2009 What about Tim Flowers not even a mention. Premier League Winner, Top keeper for Saints. England International. Pavel srynechek (bad spelling) is there n he was ****. WTF
skintsaint Posted 16 October, 2009 Posted 16 October, 2009 I nutmegged Southall when he played sunday league where i lived... Vote in for Antii..
Mao Cap Posted 16 October, 2009 Posted 16 October, 2009 Timmy Flowers (my first sporting hero)!. Friedel and Dean Kiely always put in excellent performances against us as well. But voted for Antti.
alki_in_korea Posted 16 October, 2009 Posted 16 October, 2009 Timmy Flowers (my first sporting hero)!. Friedel and Dean Kiely always put in excellent performances against us as well. But voted for Antti. at least theirs two of us. Flowers was a legend.
beavis17 Posted 16 October, 2009 Posted 16 October, 2009 Come on guys, 3rd place now and 3% behind seaman, lets get voting!
unionhotel Posted 16 October, 2009 Posted 16 October, 2009 Shilts was my favourite followed by Bonetti. Job done voted for Niemmi.
joffystevens Posted 16 October, 2009 Posted 16 October, 2009 Schmeichel by a country mile....... cudnt agree more!
RinNY Posted 16 October, 2009 Posted 16 October, 2009 Should be Schmeichel, but I've done my duty and voted for Niemi. As for the greatest ever, I never saw Banks play (apart from the Pele save) so I can't comment on him, so for me it has to be Shilts. As a young goalie myself, he was my hero, how chuffed was I when he turned up at Saints. :smt038 Banks made it look easy: he had flawless positioning, great command of his area, faultless handling. You seldom saw him make the kind of brilliant saves Pat Jennings or Peter Bonetti became famous for, because he rarely needed to! But as that fantastic save against Pele showed, he could do that too if needed. I've never seen a goalkeeper who was so seldom caught out of position, who looked so comfortable and focused all the time. There've been great goalkeepers who were nearly as good, but for sheer consistency of excellence Banks beat them all. I really think England would have gotten to the World Cup final a second time in 1970 if Banks hadn't have gotten injured; and maybe have won it too! Shilts was a great goalie too, right up there in the next group after Banks.
Saint-Fred Posted 16 October, 2009 Posted 16 October, 2009 Level with Seaman! Now theres a sentance I hoped I'd never write.
Rattlehead Posted 16 October, 2009 Posted 16 October, 2009 Without any doubt, the correct answer is Dave Beasant.
southamptonfclegend Posted 17 October, 2009 Posted 17 October, 2009 Antii Niemi (what a skate b*stard)
Bad Wolf Posted 17 October, 2009 Posted 17 October, 2009 Best ever keeper - Peter Shilton Best ever Prem keeper - Peter Schmeichel Close runner up - Tim Flowers 'Nuff said
CB Saint Posted 17 October, 2009 Posted 17 October, 2009 Has to be Antii over Schmeichel based upon number of goals prevented. Sure scheichel didn't let many in but he did have a sh1t hot defence in front of him, so in some games he didn't get his hands dirty. Antii, however, was peppered on a regular basis.
St.Jeweller Posted 17 October, 2009 Posted 17 October, 2009 Statistically I'd go for Brad Friedel on saves to shots ratio. Yawn. you wouldn't after what i,ve just seen......(Didier Drogbas' goal)
sadoldgit Posted 17 October, 2009 Posted 17 October, 2009 Gordon Banks was by far the best goalkeeper I ever saw play, followed by Peter Shilton. I don't think there are any recent keepers who come close.
Supersubpuckett Posted 17 October, 2009 Posted 17 October, 2009 Niemi now second (16%) behind Scmeichal (33%) Shay Given also doing well so looks like the man city boys are also rigging
Northernsaint Posted 17 October, 2009 Posted 17 October, 2009 Schmeical got lobbed by Philppe Albert. He was good but for sheer consistency I would say Shay Given
