Southampton Nostalgia...

I was also at Glen Eyre

Me too - we had - which is kind of unlikely to happen these days, our school leaving do in the nightclub that used to be at the back of the Flemings (Turpins !). God knows how, as they opened the proper bar at 11 and did not eject those of us remaining....

Anyone who attended King Edwards in the late 70's would have got excited had they been with me last week in Posrtswood.

In on eof the charity shops, I was sifting through a box of albums (vinyl) and came across a mint choral recording with a host of their little angels on the cover.

I wanted to but it and offer it on here but mrs h dragged me away. It's probably still there if any one on here thinks they might feature, the shop opposite the spanish food resaurant.

I left Spuds in 1980, never made the choir though (thank ****)!

Whilst looking for something else about Southampton's history, this large collection of randomness, centred loosely around Southampton Graffiti came up.

All sorts in there. I've hardly looked at it myself, but a quick scan tells me i'll be back for more!

Towards the bottom, the great floods of 2006!!

You weren't kidding about random!!

I remember a few of the grafitti!

Interesting bit about the wall next to the deVere Hotel with the US Army graffiti scratched in whilst waiting for D-Day/VD clinic! I walked right past that yesterday on my way back to the station after the match. Must take a closer look next time.

Yes, If I remember, I will also take a look at it - being careful not to touch it in case it's still contagious!

Chris Harris "Hey Look That`s Me!" Travelling around the area towing a small pink caravan with a bicycle!!

Christ I remember that.

What happened to him?

He came to our school, and we attempted the world record of sitting 'ski-sit' style in a circle (thus supporting each others weight and not falling over).

All I remember is that they filmed it, and we were cut.

B@stards....haha

Just on the outskirts but wasn't Wurzel Gummidge filmed in the Romsey area?

Did anyone ever attend any of the Radio One Summer Roadshows when they were in Southampton (or phone in to guess the mileage from the previous location?)

One of the things I always look out for when I'm back in God's Country is the tree that I was precariously hanging on for grim life in during the day after the FA Cup win in front of The Guildhall just in front of, dare I say it .... The Soul Cellar :D (as is now, obviously The Painted Wagon back then)

Every TV footage I've seen of that day, the camera scanning stops just short of me in the tree and scans back towards the players on the balcony!!

They also filmed Wurzel at Newtown House in Portmore, and on Lymington Quay Hill for the Xmas Special.

They used loads of fake snow, and after school we got taken to watch the filming.

Came back with a bag of it...why I don't know. The sort of thing you do as a kid...haha

For those that remember the pink caravan.

It seems a bit dodgy that he has always played 'dames' during his acting career....

It vaguely rang a bell but when I played the clip of the closing credits, I realised that I still remembered the theme song word for word and his closing line "Did you see yourself?" Strange.

This may bring a tear to the eye of some of the more "mature" Sotonians (like myself) on here:- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eek6tgQHJ_8

Never seen footage of Southampton speedway before. I know my parents used to travel up from Dorset occasionally to see it. Looks like they got pretty decent crowds, which begs the question. Why did it close down, was it just down to what money the Rank Organisation were offering Charles Knott for the land?

Yes indeed! The team was very well supported, we had just won the National League title and as you can see Bannister Court was a lovely stadium. Charlie Knott was, in a lot of ways, "Mr Southampton", so it must have been a really good offer for him not to have turned it down.

After a serious bout of nostalgia on the main board (http://www.saintsweb.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?p=474690#post474690) thought it might be worth starting a thread for any oldies with memories of Southampton "back in the day".

Could be anything, must be a ton of funny stories out there - just a few possible themes off the top of my head:

City events - The Southampton Show, The Carnival, The Fair ("A load of Pompey are coming down!"), Radio 1 live from the precinct

Nightlife - Barbarellas, The Top Rank ("Millionairres" night?!), The Rum Runner, Rainbows, that "indie" one down Ascupart St. in St. Mary's (Manhattens?)

Footy Pubs/Lock-ins - Painted Wagon, The Warreners, The Corner Post, Cricketers, Cowherds etc. etc.

Old Shops - Edwin Jones (?!) which became Debenhams, Toomers, Parnell's (THE place to buy your 14-hole DM's), Top Shop (body-popping outside!), Subway records

The old cinemas - ABC, Gaumont, Odeon, Saturday morning "kids shows"

Stuff to do - The Sports Centre, The Lido (legendary in '76!), The Central Baths and 'the 16'6" end' complete with kids flashing out the front windows!, Top Rank Ice Rink, The Stevedors Xmas Party, "Uncle Tony's Playtime Club" in the Echo(!), The Tyro League

City Landmarks - The Bargate, The Pier, The first McDonalds(!) - actually think it might have been Burger King(?), The Floating Bridge

Classic Gigs - The 'new' Mayflower getting wrecked in it's first week when the Pogues played, the Joiners Arms etc.

Inter-school rivalry - my old lot vs. Glen Eyre was always a classic...

You get the gist, anything and everything welcome...

Can't be bothered to troll through but....

The first Burger Joint, (not including Wimpeys) was called Huckleberries

Worzel was filmed in and around Braishfield, close to Romsey. Later scenes with the Saucy Nancy (Babs Windsor ?) were filmed in Lymington.

Yup. The makeup changing rooms were in the sports pavilion on the Rec that backed onto Braishfield Schools infants playground.. how do I know? because I was at school there at the time.

Pertwee would come out in full makeup and stand at the bottom of our playground, we'd yell bonfire and he'd run off... great fun....

I do remember him chasing my 4 year old brother down the road once, with my brother screaming his head off...

The barn he lived in that features in the credits was in Braishfield.. a girls I was at school with lived opposite it...

I remember my dad getting one of the dummies from WG for a Foxhills summer fair in the mid 80s. Huckleberries - now you're talking, for a 10 year old it felt like somebody had dropped a bit of America into Southampton (I'm from Totton, bear with me ;-))

This is brilliant!! Pity about the lack of pictures but I think that I have a book that was printed about 10 years ago about the cinemas of Southampton. Must find it. I remember going to the ABC Minors Saturday morning shows at the Broadway in Portswood. 6d and 9d!! "We are the boys and girls all known as Minors of the ABC......"

When I was a young trainee Engineer, about 22-23 years ago, myself & my boss did a structural survey on the balcony in this place. The caretaker opened up, turned on the lights & buggered off. My boss did what he had to do & buggered off, telling me to take some measurements & wait for the caretaker to get back before catching the bus back to the office.

I was in that old, dark, smelly cinema on my own for about 45 minutes. It is the most spooky/scary situation I've ever been in.

I was sh!tting myself. Your mind starts playing tricks on you & you 'see' and 'hear' things that aren't really there. :smt087

I was so glad when the caretaker got back.

Just found this, never one to venture far off the main forum.

Maybe these will kick start a few memories again.

You'll soon guess my vintage.

Monday nights at the Top Rank. Bank Holiday Mondays at the Top Rank. 14-17 year olds on the sauce.

Burger King and the BMX track on the West Quay Road opening pretty around the same time. Burger King to start the morning with a break dance performance on their taped down vinyl by the Collymore brothers.

Snooker down below at the BTC club.

Mike's burger van on Weston Shore.

Appollo Fish Bar on Alfriston Gardens.

The Indian Cottage in St Mary's

I can't believe no one's mentioned Phillips on East Street. Any respectable casual made a purchase there. My aunt worked at Gills but that was only for Gabicci

Lasky's - Saturday's dreaming of owning the hifi in there.

The wow of when the East Street shopping centre when it first opened. It soon subsided.

CIU coach trips to Southsea and Bognor.

Renditions of the Doobie Brothers 'Give me the beat boys' on the top deck of the 5 going home from the Rank.

Raffles. Was that the later name for this Eruption gaff? Always narked when it was decided that was the place we were heading.

Oceans.

The Round The World yacht race coming home in '89 - Shed loads of Steinlager slabs being given out for nothing (or am I dreaming this?)

Mini raves being put on 89-91 in pubs round the city. The only time in history when you could legitimately go into another neighbourhood pub other than your own without the fear of having your head ripped off.

Carl Cox at NY NY, Wednesday night circa '91. Legendary night.

edit: And of course, Nick's restaurant on East Street for a major feed. This was when it was good, make that great. Made a nostalgic visit back there about 8 years ago and the food was shocking.

Amazing isn't it, went there when I was about 7 or 8, most Saturdays. My parents let me walk down to the Triangle, get on the Number 14, go to the ABC and come home again all by myself or with other young kids. No IPhone nothing, wouldn't happen nowadays, they'd probably get locked up for negligence or something.

Anyone remember the name of the pub that once existed near to where Bugle Street meets Castle Way? Used to walk pass it every other Saturday on the way from the Red Funnel ferry to the Dell. Back in the mid 70s, a mate of mine, who worked at Vospers, reckoned he used to go there on Friday lunchtimes because they had topless dancers and topless barmaids. Anyone able to confirm this?

Bugle St doesn't meet Castle Way as far as I know, it becomes Upper Bugle St and then err Castle Court, for the most part Bugle St and Castle Way are parallel. Could be the Juniper Berry I suppose, Back of the Walls but topless women wouldn't have interested most of their clientele at that time.
