Southampton Nostalgia...

The Eastleigh McCarthys are Gerry, Ady (went to primary with Ady) and Sean. Not related to the Southampton McCarthys, of boxing and door security fame.

Am I right in thinking that the Eastleigh McCarthey's used to trade off the Southampton McCarthey's reputation a bit?

Related; I once had all four tyres slashed on my lovely MK1 Capri, outside The Golden Hind (formerly of Twyford Rd) and I was reliably informed it was a p*ssed up (name removed to protect my face but I'm sure you can guess) brother. I let it go as I was only 18 yrs old and a 7 stone weakling.

Eric used to live in Ethelburt Avenue in a club owned house. Ken Wimshurst lived in it before. We used to take Eric's old english sheepdog for walks.

My dad used to work for Minicabs and Eric always asked for him in person when he booked a cab for his return from the pub. Won't mention what night of the week it was ;)

The Lido was 65% **** as urban myth had us believe.

Then there was the one about Fleming park's pool water turning red if you p*ssed in it! Think we believed that for about 3 weeks before someone put it to the test...

PS I always heard the lido was 70%... still, never stopped any of us going in!

About halfway between the bridge over the railway and The Prince of Wales (probably changed its name by now ) on the left hand side.

First mini roundabout, on the left hand side there is a big Car ShowRoom (I think) ... that was the deep end :D

The Prince Of Wales did change it's name, for a while it was called The Barge, it has since changed back to the Prince Of Wales.

Many years ago, late 60's and early 70's, it is alleged that the landlady (Stella, ex landlady of The Junction, at the railway station) used to perform all sorts of tricks with a bottle during after hours drinking.

70% now that is taking the ****! As 70 Mike says we all survived it! I was told that about our school pool (remember the big blue things always getting slashed by vandals) if you peed in it , it would turn red.

Great thread, loads of stuff from way before my time which is really interesting to hear about.

Here's some nostalgia from the end of the '90's/ beginning of the 00's:

'Bar 1:50' an utter utter dive but good for cheap underage drinking: everything £1.50!

The Hobbit before they got strict, spent many a Friday evening drinking 'Gandalfs' aged 16/17.

Hammy at the Rhino on a Wednesday.

Gigs at the Joiners.

Breaking into and exploring West Quay when it was being built.

Getting onto West Quay roof just after it opened (no idea if this is still possible but if you want to try, there's a staircase at the John Lewis entrance by The old power fm cafe/ mamas & papas which goes all the way up and used to have an unlocked door onto the roof on it)

The music shop in the Bargate, bloke who ran it was a bit of a ledge, he always used to get hold of any music you wanted. 'Average Levine' always made me lol too.

After a serious bout of nostalgia on the main board (http://www.saintsweb.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?p=474690#post474690) thought it might be worth starting a thread for any oldies with memories of Southampton "back in the day". ...

Speaking as someone who has been involved in authoring, illustration and publication of historical papers and topics etc over the years, I would have thought that if you liberally illustrated many of the anecdotes posted herein, plus the addition of a few simple maps to identify locations, then you would stand a good chance of publishing this thread with someone like The History Press.

http://www.thehistorypress.co.uk

There is a wealth of entertaining personal memorabilia in this thread that would not normally appear in a standard 'History of Southampton' type book. Anecdotal titles are very popular at the moment.

I feel at least this collation should be a candidate for a 'Golden Thread' place, to preserve it and add to it as we remember more, or others new to the site find it.

A TV based memory... anyone remember "Houseparty"? Ok, anyone remember their mum watching it?? Basically a 1970's 'Loose Women' prototype where a bunch of women would get together under the guise of a coffee morning and discuss issues or show how to do something like flower arranging. Distant memory... anyone remember any of them? Am sure one was called Cherry, and there was a quite fit blonde one.

Also, on a TV theme - there just MUST be a poster or two who appeared on 'Runaround' or 'The Saturday Banana'?? Come on admit it?

PS Anyone remember a 'yoof' drama called "Going Out" - was made by TVS (or possibly even Southern TV) - and was filmed in Southampton and Portsmouth. I think Perry Benson (This is England, Somers Town) was in it, with a load of other Anna Scher drama school alumni. Many of them were also in some 15 minute soap on TVS about a radio station... anyone remember any more??

More on Going Out here - seems mostly filmed in P*mpey, but definintely remember some scenes behind that grey building next to The Mayflower.

I remember a TV series called (I think) "Target" starring Patrick Mower which was set in and around Southampton. I vaguely remember a car chase around The Bargate. Anyone remember this or is it just me!!

I remember that program, It's theme tune started with a doorbell ringing, the "ding dong" type. When I was off school with a bug on occasions this was possibly the worst daytime TV when there was already very little on. Wasn't it one of the first scheduled programs of the day after "TV for Schools and Colleges" finished? unless my Mum turned it over from ITV to BBC as they were the only two channels on at that time of day back then too.

I was driving around Windover roundabout at Bursledon today and remembered when there used to be a motel where Tesco is now. It was set back a little off the road and there used a to be a low white fence and fir trees surrounding it. When I was little I thought it was where they filmed the "Crossroads" program my Mum used to watch at teatime... which of course it wasn't.

That was also several years before the M27 existed and Upper Northam Drive at Thornhill roundabout used to be the main road into Hedge End when it was almost a small village. Yet another long walk back to Thornhill from time to time when my Mum fancied a change to shopping in Bitterne.:(

The Radio Soap was called Radio Phoenix.

Dudley Sutton (Tinker in Lovejoy) played the part of, I believe, an older, lech style drinker DJ in it.

How about "D1ck Barton, Special Agent" each episode was on for around 2-3 minutes serialised over a week at teatime in the 70's, I recall it was on after "Sinbad the Sailor and his magic belt" cartoon. Sinbad was quite weedy but when he pulled in his belt buckle in a flash of lightning he would grow muscles to beat up the bad guys.

Correct!! Yes, Target was based in Southampton. Can't remember many other dramas based in the area - other than Howard's Way obviously.

FYI here's a list of Southern TV productions.

http://www.imdb.com/company/co0103379/

And programs/films set in Southampton

http://www.imdb.com/List?endings=on&&locations=Southampton,%20Hampshire,%20England,%20UK&&heading=18;with+locations+including;Southampton,%20Hampshire,%20England,%20UK

Somewhat related, there was of course the classic episode of "Man About The House" when Robin Tripp was trying to get to the Saints v Arsenal game and broke down. Think he got picked up by some Hells Angels if memory serves. Richard O'Sullivan is a local lad and a Saints fan, hence him making Robin Tripp from So'ton too.

He provided me with many back catalogues! (ooo err)

Was this the episode when he had to borrow Sally Thomsett's tights? Did they not break down in Cemetary Road?

Anyone remember the Hedge End Conservative Club 'Strippers Scandal' in the NOTW?

Also, I know it's not Soton based, but Pebble Mill (at one) was all there was when you were off school with a poorly tummy, with regular appearances by Kenny ball and His Jazzmen. They did play OWTSGMI, so I suppose tenously linked to us.

My mates father used to work for Southern TV, and he arranged for a few of us to tour the studios, we went on the set of Houseparty. I remember being really disappointed, because it was all plasterboard & timber. I think I was expecting a propper house  (well I only about 10 years old).

I have to admit I was on Saturday Banana, again thanks to my mates Dad. I was in the audience, and I believe I was shown on tv several times. I've never seen my moment of fame, as this was pre-video days. :(

The Radio Soap was called Radio Phoenix.

I remember this, I think it was on about 5pm ish, for some reason I really enjoyed it.

Sinbad was quite weedy but when he pulled in his belt buckle in a flash of lightning he would grow muscles to beat up the bad guys.

They filmed a car chase sequence to this in Harcourt Rd/Whitworth Crescent, coincidently this was just around the corner from where my mate (see above) lived. I went and watched the filming, and remember the Director getting well p*ssed off with one of the locals because her dog kept barking during takes, he 'politely' asked her to move away from the area.

It took a whole days filming to make a car chase sequence that lasted about 20 seconds.

Chris Harris "Hey Look That`s Me!" Travelling around the area towing a small pink caravan with a bicycle!!

Thanks, you've answered my question before I'd asked it. As I was catching up on this thread, reading the earlier posts about TV, a pink caravan & the name Harris sprang to mind. You've filled in the gaps.

Just on the outskirts but wasn't Wurzel Gummidge filmed in the Romsey area?

Did anyone ever attend any of the Radio One Summer Roadshows when they were in Southampton (or phone in to guess the mileage from the previous location?)

One of the things I always look out for when I'm back in God's Country is the tree that I was precariously hanging on for grim life in during the day after the FA Cup win in front of The Guildhall just in front of, dare I say it .... The Soul Cellar :D (as is now, obviously The Painted Wagon back then)

Every TV footage I've seen of that day, the camera scanning stops just short of me in the tree and scans back towards the players on the balcony!!

Worzel was filmed in and around Braishfield, close to Romsey. Later scenes with the Saucy Nancy (Babs Windsor ?) were filmed in Lymington.

The Saturday Banana car was done by the place i first worked at, "Wheelie Webbs" in Portswood and mural was hand painted (airbrushed) by the late great "Chas Tyre" (rip mate),

And does anybody remember the scale model of the moon lander at Itchen collage, on the middle road side! :)

I remember the one in the precinct in the late 70's - remember the day vividly, not so much for the roadshow, but as I'd unadvisedly given the fingers to some huge punk on a bus (who was from King Edwards believe it or not!) who then proceeded to chase me and my mates through town. Come to think of it, it was reminiscent of a scene from 'Going Out' (per posts above).

Was 'Houseparty' on after 'The Galloping Gourmet'? :-k

The Galloping Gourmet....I remember that.

Also Fanny Craddock. There was the classic where she had cooked a load of 'pastries' and her husband turns to camera and says "I hope all your doughnuts turn out like Fannys...."

Anyway, back on topic....

I am working in Braishfield ATM and one of the best albums ever "Liege and Lief" by Fairport Convention was recorded just along the road at Farley Chamberlayne in the late 60`s.

I also got inolved with a kids serial called "The Witches and the Grinnygog" a lot of which was recorded around Southampton and Winchester.

Myself and the other urchins from the estate I lived on would ride down to Northam and climb over the fence by the river to get onto the Banana.

Never failed to get in.

Also got into Runaround when X-Ray Specs performed!

X-Ray Specs on a kids programme - fantastic! I loved that album (Germ Free Adolesence), esp "Identity", what a classic.

This leads me on to another topic which might fit this thread - music of the day. Now I know that every generation thinks their era is the best, but really growing up with Punk, New Wave, Electro, two tone, and some top soul music too was just incredible. Give me that soundtrack to my youth any day vs. the safe sanitised and, let's face it, BORING, "R'n'B" that kids grow up with these days...
