Professor Posted 14 October, 2009 Posted 14 October, 2009 I hear from a Brighton fan that there is a rumour around their ground, that one of Dean Wilkin's starlets, midfielder Dean Cox, may be on his way to Saints. Cox is said to be a young talent but he rarely plays a full game for Brighton and is currently a regular on the bench.
Glasgow_Saint Posted 14 October, 2009 Posted 14 October, 2009 sign him up p.s can anyone advise if he is any good on football manager?

I think (?) there may have been a thead on him before...in August ????... revolving around the fact that he was " small of stature " (as Shakespeare may have written)... but quite nippy on the ball. Still, AP & Co. haven't done badly up until now with signings - so why not ?
david in sweden Posted 14 October, 2009 Posted 14 October, 2009 Can you be a starlet at 22? maybe like Peter Pan ..who counts birthdays ?.
krissyboy31 Posted 14 October, 2009 Posted 14 October, 2009 Wasn't he rumoured to be joining us when AP first took over and wasn't it pointed out that he was even shorter than Gillett? Might be thinking of someone else though!
norwaysaint Posted 14 October, 2009 Posted 14 October, 2009 Are we able to accomodate their little Cox?
benjii Posted 14 October, 2009 Posted 14 October, 2009 I hope we're not intending to put square pegs in round holes.

Saint_clark Posted 14 October, 2009 Posted 14 October, 2009 Wasn't he rumoured to be joining us when AP first took over and wasn't it pointed out that he was even shorter than Gillett? Might be thinking of someone else though! Yes, but Cox is a winger I believe.
a1ex2001 Posted 14 October, 2009 Posted 14 October, 2009 Can you be a starlet at 22? Yes at any club except Southampton were you must be the finished article playing to full international standard before the end of your teens, other clubs appreciate that not everyone is a Theo Walcott or a Gareth Bale! Plenty of big name professionals haven't made a huge impact until there early to mid twenties and some even later in life.

Might be thinking of someone else though! Well of course, we shouldn't discriminate against players on account of stature. (I recall some who criticised us for signing Peter Crouch, for opposite reasons, of course) We have a very poor history of utilising players of this build, including releasing juniors like; Dennis Wise AND Kevin Phillips (back in the 1980's ).......(mmm...wonder what happened to them ?) Regardless of shoe size, or length of shirt tail, we should give Cox a chance and hope that ..IF Simon Gillett goes permanent at Doncaster... he doesn't move on and end up playing Prem.League with some team or other in 3-4 years time.

I wouldn't worry about that too much TBH.
david in sweden Posted 14 October, 2009 Posted 14 October, 2009 I wouldn't worry about that too much TBH. ...famous last words, but I agree it does seem unlikley!
Wes Tender Posted 14 October, 2009 Posted 14 October, 2009 Pardew's signings have been very good so far, so whatever he believes in the way of good prospects, he has my confidence in his judgement.
saints-cris Posted 14 October, 2009 Posted 14 October, 2009 Iv seen him at Brighton station a couple of times as i live nearby, he is as small as said. Tiny. From what iv heard he has got talent but is a bit hit and miss, and might have a bit of an ego thing? Wether thats true or not i dont know. A winger who comes inside a bit i think.

Gets better every day...!
Guest Dark Sotonic Mills Posted 14 October, 2009 Posted 14 October, 2009 Yeah that was "tiny Cox". As opposed to Big Cox who plays for the West Coast Eagles.
Hatch Posted 14 October, 2009 Posted 14 October, 2009 Iv seen him at Brighton station a couple of times as i live nearby, he is as small as said. Tiny. From what iv heard he has got talent but is a bit hit and miss, and might have a bit of an ego thing? Wether thats true or not i dont know. A winger who comes inside a bit i think. So we have established that this Cox is tiny and comes inside a lot.
suewhistle Posted 14 October, 2009 Posted 14 October, 2009 Should be OK if he can stroke the ball around a bit and occasionally stick an oar in.
Doctoroncall Posted 14 October, 2009 Posted 14 October, 2009 Should be OK if he can stroke the ball around a bit and occasionally stick an oar in. Maybe he'll be able to provide the penetrating runs into the box we're been missing, although as he's only a "starlet", I hope he can concentrate to deliver the goods rather than mess up before he's in a good position.
Chez Posted 14 October, 2009 Posted 14 October, 2009 Yes at any club except Southampton were you must be the finished article playing to full international standard before the end of your teens, other clubs appreciate that not everyone is a Theo Walcott or a Gareth Bale! sambosa75 Posted 14 October, 2009 Posted 14 October, 2009 Hopefully Pardew can play with Cox up the middle, making late thrusts into the box.
Victor Posted 14 October, 2009 Posted 14 October, 2009 As opposed to Big Cox who plays for the West Coast Eagles. What's a West Coast Eagle - does it play rounders or netball or 'soccer' in America, or some such thing?
Guest Dark Sotonic Mills Posted 14 October, 2009 Posted 14 October, 2009 What's a West Coast Eagle - does it play rounders or netball or 'soccer' in America, or some such thing? Aussie Rules.
suewhistle Posted 14 October, 2009 Posted 14 October, 2009 Doctoroncall, don't think we can keep this joke up much longer......
Doctoroncall Posted 14 October, 2009 Posted 14 October, 2009 Doctoroncall, don't think we can keep this joke up much longer...... I had to think long and hard about what you're saying there.
Hatch Posted 14 October, 2009 Posted 14 October, 2009 Hope he can last for a full 90 minutes, plus the warm up beforehand.
beavis17 Posted 14 October, 2009 Posted 14 October, 2009 if he does sign i hope he can stay on top of his game, show us his close ball control and spray some passes around
Victor Posted 14 October, 2009 Posted 14 October, 2009 Aussie Rules. Blimey, I'm in trouble when my son reads my query - he's heavily into Aussie Rules; an Englishman playing Australian Rules for Ireland in Croatia last week - how Irish is that?
benjii Posted 14 October, 2009 Posted 14 October, 2009 So is he coming or has someone just fluffed this up?
Hatch Posted 14 October, 2009 Posted 14 October, 2009 So is he coming or has someone just fluffed this up? mustn't speculate as loose lips sink ships.
benjii Posted 14 October, 2009 Posted 14 October, 2009 This thread is starting to get pretty turgid IMO.
RonManager Posted 14 October, 2009 Posted 14 October, 2009 Pretty flaccid - but give it a wee while and I'm sure it'll perk up again.
Windmill Arm 2 Posted 14 October, 2009 Posted 14 October, 2009 I hear from a Brighton fan that there is a rumour around their ground, that one of Dean Wilkin's starlets, midfielder Dean Cox, may be on his way to Saints. Cox is said to be a young talent but he rarely plays a full game for Brighton and is currently a regular on the bench. A 'Starlet' who rarely gets a full game........are you sure he's a 'starlet' ?
Scummer Posted 14 October, 2009 Posted 14 October, 2009 A 'Starlet' who rarely gets a full game........are you sure he's a 'starlet' ? I guess that means he was a starlet under Wilkins, but not so much under their new manager.

Only in Australia could they have bunch of blokes in shorts 3 sizes too small, running around a cricket pitch booting a rugby ball about and call it football.....

Don't forget the two butchers who stand behind the goals doing that robotic dance when someone scores.
SFC Forever Posted 14 October, 2009 Posted 14 October, 2009 If little cox was to score would we see it?
mikee Posted 14 October, 2009 Posted 14 October, 2009 I can't help thinking that this whole thread is a bit premature and i hope it doesn't turn into an anti climax now that we are all excited!
Saint Fan CaM Posted 14 October, 2009 Posted 14 October, 2009 I just hope if he's a fast winger that he can (4)skin his opponents down to the byline.
sotonist Posted 14 October, 2009 Posted 14 October, 2009 If little cox was to score would we see it? How would we know if it was in or not?
John Boy Saint Posted 14 October, 2009 Posted 14 October, 2009 Can you be a starlet at 22? Where he is now after a couple of Woo-Woo's you can be whatever you like dharling x Thats me on a warning with the mods now
shurlock Posted 14 October, 2009 Posted 14 October, 2009 We were linked to him earlier on in the season around the time we got Dean Hammond = and nothing came of it. Is this just reheated old news?
ericofarabia Posted 14 October, 2009 Posted 14 October, 2009 So we have established that this Cox is tiny and comes inside a lot. Probably dribbles around the box a lot as well. Being from Brighton he'd be used to being taken from behind by a lunging sliding tackle
oxfordshire_saint Posted 14 October, 2009 Posted 14 October, 2009 Surely this is a mixup and he is one of the matchday mascots there?
