saint_stevo Posted 10 October, 2009 Posted 10 October, 2009 Im guessing the pitch didn't help in the second half, just seen the highlights on SSN.....
saint_stevo Posted 10 October, 2009 Posted 10 October, 2009 from the Southend fans forum "I'll just say a word about Southampton. Their midfield is everything ours wants to be. Quick, Intuitive, Inventive, Expansive and bred on a familiarity that can only be found on a consistent, starting 4 or 5 players that understand eachother. A different class to our shower."
rick1976.4.38 Posted 10 October, 2009 Posted 10 October, 2009 three wins on the spin, magic.the players have lost that loosing mentality, onwards and upwards with ap's red and white army
bpsaint Posted 10 October, 2009 Posted 10 October, 2009 I'll just say a word about Southampton. Their midfield is everything ours wants to be. Quick, Intuitive, Inventive, Expansive and bred on a familiarity that can only be found on a consistent, starting 4 or 5 players that understand eachother. A different class to our shower. So nice to hear something postive about our team for a change! What a great result that was,was slightly dubious about how we'd play in their tight little ground and am chuffed to bits that once again we didn't let our heads drop once we conceded! Its hard not to get carried away as theres still a long way to go but 3 wins in a week is a fantastic acheivement, considering what us fans have been through in the past few years!
OttawaSaint Posted 10 October, 2009 Posted 10 October, 2009 Just seen the result. WONDERFUL, makes following Saints fun again!
davec Posted 10 October, 2009 Posted 10 October, 2009 At a party in P****y this evening! Couldn't resist singing ' we've got more points than you!' Happy days! Play offs here we come!!
Andy_Porter Posted 10 October, 2009 Posted 10 October, 2009 Never felt so rough standing in a football ground but it was so worth the train trip there and back. We bossed the game from start to finish and even when there free kick went in I was still sure we'd go on to win the game. Schneiderlin looked great in a more advanced role and was very unlucky not to win the penalty, he shouldn't have gone down like a sack of **** but there was definate contact. I was a bit worried at the start that we might not have had enough forward thinking midfielders with Mellis out but Schneiderlin really shone and even put in some great tackles tracking back. It seems last season really helped him adapt and now he's really starting to turn it on for us. Hopefully his injury problems are behind him now, he was my MOTM. Lallana took his two goals well and should have had a third really, he's starting to look like the player we all expected him to be. He's so skillfull and quick with the ball, now he's doing that in the rigth areas he's looking really dangerous. I wouldn't be suprised if he finishes our top scorer for the season. Those two where the stand out performers, I don't think there was a bad performance from the rest of our squad. The back four are as good as anything we've put together since we got relegated even including the play off season back four. Wotton looks like a decent holding midfielders when he's got Hammond infront of him and Waigo and Lambert will cause anyone problems. If the season started today we'd win the league easily, it's just a shame we had such a messed up pre season and started so poorly. I honestly think this team would do well in the Championship now, the players are really starting to grow in confidence and starting to really look like a team. Pardew has found the right balance and blend going forward and the defence look solid. Just hope we can avoid any injuries to Jaidi, Trottman, Hammond, Lallana, Waigo or Lambert. If we can keep those six fit for the majority of the season then I think the play offs are a realistic goal. Oh and the fans where as good as I can remember for a long time, probably since Reading. I haven't felt this positive about a Southampton side in a long long time, something just doesn't feel right, i'm not supposed to be happy after an away game...
Genk Posted 10 October, 2009 Posted 10 October, 2009 Just back, decent team performance, and we got the result to match. The James incident - didn't see it only James crouching over on the ground, can't really comment. Schneiderlin's 'penalty' - Looked a bit like he left a leg out knowing he'd lost the ball. Baj swore he didn't make contact, I thought he caught the trailing leg. Either way he was definitely looking for it. Our best players were Harding, Jaidi and for the goals Lallana. Having said that all the team looked pretty good. Davis never really had to exert himself, altough his attempt at building a wall was disasterous. Perhaps we should get a Chinese goalie. The Saints fans made a terrific noise. The Shrimpers didn't say all that much. Most random heckle ever walking away from the ground - Some old Shrimp git walking up to me and going, "er... McGoldrick for England!" Had the same guy say to me before the game 'There's only one Dave McGoldrick' think he was a Southend/Forest fan haha.
joffystevens Posted 10 October, 2009 Posted 10 October, 2009 lallana has really showed the potential he has in the last three games, i think rickie lambert and lallana will be a formidable partnership upfront for us and i wouldn't be supprised if the majority of lallanas goals came from lambert flick ons. great performance from the rest of the team papa waigo is getting better every game should've really scored today but at 3-1 you can let him off as long as he finishes chances wen needed to trotman and jaidi have a good partnership going on at the centre of our defence and would be great if we could sign trotters permanently in jan or at least extend the loan till the end of the season. Michail Antonio from reading showed promising signs as well in the later stages of the game getting soaked in the rain and 3 hour train journeys are made worthwhile when your team takes three points from home convincingly COYR!!!
Jimmy_D Posted 10 October, 2009 Posted 10 October, 2009 seems weird that the weekend hasn't even started yet, and yet we're not worrying about how Saints will do, we've already won
LostBoys Posted 10 October, 2009 Posted 10 October, 2009 Sounded good on the radio even with 'happy' Merrington. well done to all travelling fans in the rain.
Wicked Mush Posted 10 October, 2009 Posted 10 October, 2009 Saints dominated and were excellent tonight - the fans were superb and there were loads of good chants that went on and on - spoke to se Southend fans after and they said the Saints fans were very good and really load - I'm so proud!! Coyr
70's Mike Posted 10 October, 2009 Posted 10 October, 2009 Two starts for Wotton two wins coincidence or is he essential to allow our more creative players space
Toomer Posted 10 October, 2009 Posted 10 October, 2009 AP has got the team playing his way, we have got the monkey off our back by being in plus points the future looks good, the futures bright the futures red and white.
NickG Posted 10 October, 2009 Posted 10 October, 2009 if we get 2 more wins in next two games - we are likely to be out of relegation zone, looking at climbing table quickly and with high confidence. IMHO next two games could dictate our season - drop points and will be mixed results - win and it will be great season
SaintRobbie Posted 10 October, 2009 Posted 10 October, 2009 (edited) What no critics of Pardew? Eat your words impatient people... we're on our way back to the Premiership. Alan Pardew's Red and White Army! Edited 10 October, 2009 by SaintRobbie
Draino76 Posted 10 October, 2009 Posted 10 October, 2009 Delighted! My first away game of teh season and on that showing; will be going on many more. Shame I didn't have my glasses with me as all our goals were at the far end. I promised my gf a cracking night out in Southend but a L1 footy game in the ****ing rain was probably not her ideal choice. But she actually rather enjoyed it as she started refering to Saints by using 'we' and 'us'. We have a new fan.
SaintRobbie Posted 10 October, 2009 Posted 10 October, 2009 Just seen the result. WONDERFUL, makes following Saints fun again! Great post! Love reading this... I dunno about others but all of a sudden it's like a wave of Strachan-esque optimism has hit the club again. I think we're going to enjoy being Southampton FC fans again from here on in. Enjoy the next 5 years return to the Premiership.
M271 Posted 10 October, 2009 Posted 10 October, 2009 Great result and a brilliant week of 3 wins (when did that last happen ?) All of the wins came from being pegged back to 1 - 1 or from 0 - 2 down which hopefully shows a change in mentality that hasn't been there for 5 years. 3 wins doesn't make a season with the likelihood of promotion but carry on with the league form of the last month 3 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss and it makes the playoffs possible. Knowing Saints, like we do, just as we think everything is rosey there will be some disappointments, **** ups and bad patches to come but we have to keep the commitment to the club and team to get us through these times. I got my tickets for the Oldham game 2 weeks ago and hope that we can get the same great following that we had at Carlisle and Southend to cheer the team on.

ottery st mary Posted 10 October, 2009 Posted 10 October, 2009 Well done Saints players/management. To the Saints fans at Roots Hall...I salute you one and all......Thank you very much......You bring back the spirit of Southampton and The mighty Saints......You fans were awesome. COYRs.
Asaint4ever Posted 10 October, 2009 Posted 10 October, 2009 We'll walk this league. Fact. Never! maybe next year.
austsaint Posted 10 October, 2009 Posted 10 October, 2009 What are the chances of Trotman staying beyond the loan term?

AP OUT You lot at the game kept that VERY quiet... We scored PLAYING HOOFBALL.... ....And, just before half-time, Lallana raced on to a long clearance from keeper Kelvin Davis before clinically firing past Mildenhall for his eighth goal of the season. Toadhall Saint Posted 10 October, 2009 Posted 10 October, 2009 What are the chances of Trotman staying beyond the loan term? We need to sign him end of.
Dibden Purlieu Saint Posted 10 October, 2009 Posted 10 October, 2009 We need to sign him end of. 100% agree.
Poshie72 Posted 10 October, 2009 Posted 10 October, 2009 Have a BIG smile on my face this morning... how great it feels to be a saints fan again. 3 wins on the bounce, sounds like the team put in a TEAM performance. Need to keep the momentum going and push to be in a decent spot by xmas... after then who knows.
Toadhall Saint Posted 10 October, 2009 Posted 10 October, 2009 100% agree. In the games I've seen he hasn't put a foot wrong.
sandwichsaint Posted 10 October, 2009 Posted 10 October, 2009 Fantastic away day, and a result and performance that can only bring more confidence and belief right through the club and the fanbase. We were straight out of the traps and Southend hardly got out of their own half for the first 10 mins. Someone posted on here a couple of games back that Saints hadn't scored in the first (10 mins) of a game for something like (60? !) games ... now we've done it twice, grabbed early goals in back-to-back league games, it really does make such a difference. Have to say that AP's restructuring of the team has been nothing short of brilliant, great CB pairing, decent LB, quality across the middle, Lallana accomodated and firing on all cylinders, and Ricky topping it all off up front. This side is really starting to remind me of when I first started watching Saints; great all-for-one team spirit, lashings of attacking play, and not scared to put our foot in all over the park, any side that plays us this season better be ready for a battle because we look well up for it! When was the last time Saints physically dominated the oppo like we did last night? Jaidi, Trottman, Wotton, Hammond, Harding, Lambert, we've got half a team of 60's throwbacks there. Really entertaining game last night and put that on top of the Gillingham result and we will surely soon be nudging over 20k for home games which for L1 is fantastic. As I saw it: KD 7, no chance with the goal and his routine stuff was tidy in nightmare conditions for goalkeepers. LJ 7, done for pace once or twice but decent set piece deliveries and he looks a real part of the team spirit. Jaidi 8, awesome, starting to look fitter and real quality at this level. Trottman 7, another busy and comitted performance, sign him now! Harding 7, (8 for an excellent first half) but gave their right side a lot of room in the second half. Papa 8, very impressed, he seems like he wants to be here and looks like he's really enjoying his football. Emphatically answered any questions about his commitment away-at-S'fend-on-a-wet-Friday-night. Sign him! Wotton 8.5, this was the player I thought we'd signed 18 months ago. Swept well in front of our back 4 and made timely interceptions all game including a goal saving one when he tracked back to RB to win a back post header with the rest of the defence awol. Much less hoofing and much more simple passing than previously, the best game I've seen him play for us. Won't start every game but a useful squad player on this form. Schneiderlin 8, the most improved player in the side, long may it continue. Hammond 8, solid, consistent, great signing and hope he stays with us up the leagues. Lallana 9, outstanding (again), mixed skill and application and prodigous workrate (I didn't know he had it in him!). Gone from a player that never looked like scoring last season to a player who doesn't look like missing, deadly round the box and a real hunger for goals, fantastic to see. RL 8, terrific presence and power, a real leader and focal point of all our attacking play. He's got it all and I think we are starting to see the best of him now, long may that continue. Mention too for the lad who came on late on the RW (Reading boy I presume?). Looked up for it, pacey, direct and a great option in the last 15 minutes. Fair play to Southend too, it was a great game and they played their part. I was the first to tout Tilson on here several seasons ago now and he really does do well to keep them punching above their weight. They had several excellent players, neat, tidy, technical but they couldn't live with our strength and power. They tried to play passing football from the back and stuck to their task well never letting their heads drop, and never making it easy for us. Really glad I went last night, the sort of football grounds and football experiences that won't be around for ever. And lay off the ref! Full marks for getting the game on in atrocious weather, and for giving us a very iffy first goal, and for letting the players get on with some good old fashioned sliding tackles! Schneiderlin was rightly booked (I had a decent view of it) he slalomed into the area with exquisite skill, then over ran the ball, tucked his foot under the defender's (planted) foot, and took off full length with the ball 4 or 5m away from him; it was all a bit embarrassing really. Pardew out ... with the chequebook, and sign Trottman and Waigo asap.
Andy_Porter Posted 10 October, 2009 Posted 10 October, 2009 In the games I've seen he hasn't put a foot wrong. He keeps getting better as well, the partnership with Jaidi is really strong for this league. If we can sign him and Waigo permanently then we've got a team ready for promotion next season. If we can offload a few of the fringe players and then replace them with one or two more quality players in January we will be flying.
Saint Billy Posted 10 October, 2009 Posted 10 October, 2009 What no critics of Pardew? Eat your words impatient people... we're on our way back to the Premiership. Alan Pardew's Red and White Army! Eat and swallowed! Well done boys, things are looking much better.
Windmill Arm 2 Posted 10 October, 2009 Posted 10 October, 2009 PARDEW OUT FFS !!! Where are all the forum spastics this morning?
rick1976.4.38 Posted 10 October, 2009 Posted 10 October, 2009 we are southampton the pride of the south,we are on our way back, coyr
forever a red and white Posted 10 October, 2009 Posted 10 October, 2009 good thing is that we are scoring and keeping these things tight at the back, seem to have a good balance and managed to see the game out.
tpbury Posted 10 October, 2009 Posted 10 October, 2009 Just realised I've moved to Australia and will probably never see the Saints play again. :-( This wasn't an issue over the last few years due to depressingness. It's great to see positivity eeking back into this forum!!!!!!!!!!
JustinR Posted 10 October, 2009 Posted 10 October, 2009 Just been looking at the table, thinking about what results we want to see today. The conclusion is that we want draws in all games! We are in a strange position of needing to stay in touch with teams at the bottom AND near the top!
SW11_Saint Posted 10 October, 2009 Posted 10 October, 2009 Superb result. Things looking up. What a difference a week makes... Indeed.
NickG Posted 10 October, 2009 Posted 10 October, 2009 Just been looking at the table, thinking about what results we want to see today. The conclusion is that we want draws in all games! We are in a strange position of needing to stay in touch with teams at the bottom AND near the top! was thinking the same - my thinking we won't be anywhere near relegation so if teams at bottom win all it does is slightly delay us catching them. we will most likely finish 8-12th -where doesn't really matter so the teams around there don't really matter. we may just get into play offs, if we are contending for play offs we will need good results - and those teams not to pull away. Therefore I am happy if all teams in bottom half take points from the top teams

shurlock Posted 10 October, 2009 Posted 10 October, 2009 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rGJz7Z_Rnw8 get a decent referee and they would have been down to 10 men and we would have murdered them 7-1. one feck and his fish tank.
Genk Posted 10 October, 2009 Posted 10 October, 2009 Nothing to do with the result, but I was certain I saw Paul Trollope on the train from Stratford to Prittlewell last night. Looked at Southend's fixtures when I got the programme and saw they are playing Bristol Rovers next so it must of been him. Wish I had said something now. Also to add, a Southend fan came up to me before the game and said we were the best fans he has seen away from home when they came to St Mary's in 2006 when it was the Alan Ball tribute. They seem a nice club up there. Fair play to them
Viking Warrior Posted 10 October, 2009 Posted 10 October, 2009 (edited) Well What a miserable night weatherwise in Southend. Southend is a bit of ****hole and as for the Guest House I stayed in, well it made fawlty towers look like a palace. If anybody is planning to stay in Southend avoid the terrace. It has a shower but no hot water!! Its the first time I have been to Roots hall, The only good part I guess was being able to stand throughout the match without some officious steward telling us to sit down or be ejected, I was stood two rows back from the right hand post. It brought the memories flooding back of when I was younger standing behind the goals in both the archers and milton end. My fellow fans were fantastic with the constant singing and chants, Keeping the AP army chant going for so long was impressive before the lads directly in fromt of me burst into the Ricky Lambert chant Absolutely brilliant. As for the match much has been written already. Its interesting the views on the schiderlins incident. I thought it was a penalty but I thought he was clipped by another player before actually he went down, Talking of Schniders, Even the southend announcer had trouble saying his name. The one observation I would make on the second half which I found frustrating was we just sat back and defended with 5 in midfield. I had a number of anxious moments when they kept pumping the ball into our area, If they had scored we could well have gone on and lost the plot. AP should have given instruction for the forwards to go on the attack. At least to give us away fans something to cheer. It wasnt till the end that we created a couple of chances although papa should have made it 4 but somehow their GK was able to keep it out after a great pass by Rickie Lambert. There is one person I want to mention and that was one of their stewards who engaged in friendly banter with some of our fans. And they shooks hands with him at the end of the game . Brilliant stuff . Theres no place for gestapo like stewards. Edited 10 October, 2009 by Viking Warrior
Viking Warrior Posted 10 October, 2009 Posted 10 October, 2009 Just watched the youtube footage, Which game was he at. When they equalised the Southend just erupted. His fish tank was making more noise that the whole southend fans who were in attendance. One other observation. There mascots , The must be the worst mascots in the whole football league. An eel and as for the shrimp looked more like a vibrator left under the grill.
Genk Posted 10 October, 2009 Posted 10 October, 2009 Anyone see the forwards taking shots at Bart before the game? Just showed how quality Lambert is and boy Saganowski's shots were appauling! He's really struggling at the moment.
MadDogMatt Posted 10 October, 2009 Posted 10 October, 2009 Enjoyed reading the post match posts this evening, voice has now recovered from last night. Agree with the more optimistic posters; this team is capable of doing well in the CC; this team is capable of making the play offs; this club, our club, our ground and set up, our owner - thankyou thankyou - our fans, are Premiership quality, all our managers signings are paying off and he is mixing the best of what he inherited. So to a couple of angles I have not seen posted, worst pre match rain since Steau Bucherest (excuse spelling) or Ipswich away last season? Stand up if you were also at these three! Nice touch to have a pub for the away fans, it was c**p but a good place to dry out and warm up for the game. A final mention for the Southend fans on the train back, respect. As posted, they thought our StMarys support (06?) was the best they have seen "way better than Chelsea last season in the FAC(?)". Back to the optimistic outlook, climb a league position a week on average and we can, and I think will, make the play offs. There is a thunder building, there may be set backs, but we are on the up! AP's R&W Army
RonManager Posted 10 October, 2009 Posted 10 October, 2009 This is priceless!! What a sad muppet this guy is Suicidal Sid! Thought at any moment he was going to pull out a razor and slit his wrists.
