Southend Build-up

That stadium, or their fans are not even romotelty intimidating. They are quiet; even when they score.

Strange as when i went it was a small stadium about 12k that was packed to the rafters and we were all crammed in like sardines. And when they scored their 2nd the place was rocking and felt like it was about to fall down.

Guess tonight will be interesting to see if it has indeed gone that way.

:) I can understand why everyone, including the players are confused about the system we play. But it really is not as complicated as everyone makes out, we simply have 5 in midfield when defending and subsequently circumstance and players preferences then come to the fore when attacking. Most of our players are struggling to put in an effective corner, so to believe the playing positions they end up in after a "to and fro" is completely deliberate is a little unrealistic.

When 4 in midfield is good enough to boss the opposition I imagine that will be the time we stick with 2 up front, either by design or fault. I have been impressed with Pardew of late in that by having 5 in midfield when defending has gone a way to plugging those holes we previously have seen. The big trick being able to maintain a very effective attacking option to compliment it.

Agree about Holmes as previously his tracking back really helped shore up the left side, while still delivering an attacking threat. Wooton will always cost us if put to the test, but he can be effective when others nullify his weaknesses. I am not sure Gillet will ever get it, in the position he has been asked to play, but he should have done enough by now to show he has a place somewhere.

I agree. Whether you call it 4-5-1 or 4-3-3 is immaterial. It's two sides of the same coin. Putting Waigo, Lambert and Lallana up as the front three gave Lallana the platform to play from, and Waigo has probably played in that formation most of his time so far. That is what they tend to do in Italy.

AP's next stroke of genius was to play the midfield three like a V, with Wotton anchoring the offensive Mellis and Hammond. All of a sudden we had players running at the opposition from all angles, and their back fours didn't know what to cover next.

Against Bristol we showed the attacking brilliance, and against Gillingham it was clear to Lallana and Waigo that they needed to give cover to their own fullback (that's where 5 in the midfield comes in).

The result has been that we have scored 8 goals from open play in three games. I call that 'having solved our problem to score from open play'.

Looks like I'm going to have to give the commentary a misss tonight, got friends out from UK and we will be out on the razz. Only hope is that the 5am getting to bed this morning might mean an early finish tonight and I may get to hear the latter stages :D

Hoping for a win, and actually feel we will ... oh dear getting into the 'we'rew gonna walk this league mode':p

can see papa going missing in games like this, especially when the pitches get a bit worse. Think we are a fair weather team, thats why I think a point in the blustery rain would be a good result. I think wotton has to play tonight, he adds a bit if bite.

'Papa going missing in games like this?' Pessimism rules OK. Give the guy a chance.

Have we seen Papa play in games like 'this' yet?

I think Papa has done more in 3 games than Wotton did in a season for us.

The team is:

Saints: Davis, Harding, Jaidi, Trotman, James, Wotton, Hammond, Schneiderlin, Lallana, N'Diaye, Lambert. Subs: Bialkowski, Thomas, Perry, Mills, Antonio, Saganowski, Connolly

1st 11 looks good and bench now also looks strong. pressume Bialkowski has returned from his loan then? and no Holmes???

Cant argue with that. So I wont.

Looks a really strong bench. Would be interesting to see how many of those players would get into other L1 sides.

Starting to feel this season is coming together now. 3 more points tonight and a nice easy day with Stelling and the boys on a saturday afternoon.
