St Marco Posted 9 October, 2009 Posted 9 October, 2009 That stadium, or their fans are not even romotelty intimidating. They are quiet; even when they score. Strange as when i went it was a small stadium about 12k that was packed to the rafters and we were all crammed in like sardines. And when they scored their 2nd the place was rocking and felt like it was about to fall down. Guess tonight will be interesting to see if it has indeed gone that way.
Clifford Nelson Posted 9 October, 2009 Posted 9 October, 2009 I can understand why everyone, including the players are confused about the system we play. But it really is not as complicated as everyone makes out, we simply have 5 in midfield when defending and subsequently circumstance and players preferences then come to the fore when attacking. Most of our players are struggling to put in an effective corner, so to believe the playing positions they end up in after a "to and fro" is completely deliberate is a little unrealistic. When 4 in midfield is good enough to boss the opposition I imagine that will be the time we stick with 2 up front, either by design or fault. I have been impressed with Pardew of late in that by having 5 in midfield when defending has gone a way to plugging those holes we previously have seen. The big trick being able to maintain a very effective attacking option to compliment it. Agree about Holmes as previously his tracking back really helped shore up the left side, while still delivering an attacking threat. Wooton will always cost us if put to the test, but he can be effective when others nullify his weaknesses. I am not sure Gillet will ever get it, in the position he has been asked to play, but he should have done enough by now to show he has a place somewhere. I agree. Whether you call it 4-5-1 or 4-3-3 is immaterial. It's two sides of the same coin. Putting Waigo, Lambert and Lallana up as the front three gave Lallana the platform to play from, and Waigo has probably played in that formation most of his time so far. That is what they tend to do in Italy. AP's next stroke of genius was to play the midfield three like a V, with Wotton anchoring the offensive Mellis and Hammond. All of a sudden we had players running at the opposition from all angles, and their back fours didn't know what to cover next. Against Bristol we showed the attacking brilliance, and against Gillingham it was clear to Lallana and Waigo that they needed to give cover to their own fullback (that's where 5 in the midfield comes in). The result has been that we have scored 8 goals from open play in three games. I call that 'having solved our problem to score from open play'.
iansums Posted 9 October, 2009 Posted 9 October, 2009 Huge upsurge in feelgood factor after new signing only to be dashed yet again by a poor result??
southamptonfc Posted 9 October, 2009 Posted 9 October, 2009 Is tonights game on tv? I assumed it was because it's a Friday game but can't see it in the sky listings.
krissyboy31 Posted 9 October, 2009 Posted 9 October, 2009 Looks like Barnard's fit but M'voto is out. http://www.southendunited.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10444~1821806,00.html
Doctoroncall Posted 9 October, 2009 Posted 9 October, 2009 Southend haven't the best home record, played 5, won 1, lost 1 and drawn 3 with only 5 goals for (3 against). Time to push for our first away win I think now we are scoring freely.
Doctoroncall Posted 9 October, 2009 Posted 9 October, 2009 Is tonights game on tv? I assumed it was because it's a Friday game but can't see it in the sky listings. apparently the change in ko time/date was at the request of the old bill.
ericofarabia Posted 9 October, 2009 Posted 9 October, 2009 Looks like I'm going to have to give the commentary a misss tonight, got friends out from UK and we will be out on the razz. Only hope is that the 5am getting to bed this morning might mean an early finish tonight and I may get to hear the latter stages Hoping for a win, and actually feel we will ... oh dear getting into the 'we'rew gonna walk this league mode'
Sold To The Man @ The Bar Posted 9 October, 2009 Posted 9 October, 2009 4-3 @ 200/1 - worth a quid With who ??
Smirking_Saint Posted 9 October, 2009 Posted 9 October, 2009 http://football-live-channel.blogspot.com/2009/10/watch-live-streaming-southend-united-vs.html It probably won't work though
Tractor_Saint Posted 9 October, 2009 Posted 9 October, 2009 With who ?? I know Skybet has some good odds on this game.
corsacar saint Posted 9 October, 2009 Posted 9 October, 2009 The law of averages says that we are due an away win. We certainly need as many wins on the bounce as we can muster. With this squad we should be well capable of that. Murty apart we have everyone avilable, so there should not now be any need for excuses.
warsash saint Posted 9 October, 2009 Posted 9 October, 2009 Going out on the p*ss in Gunwharf tonight (jabs are upto date) Hope to return later after a few beers & a kebab to find a resounding 2 nil win
Bad Wolf Posted 9 October, 2009 Posted 9 October, 2009 just stopped off at the service stations. Starting to **** it down. Hope its not called off.
brett24 Posted 9 October, 2009 Posted 9 October, 2009 papa wont fancy it if its raining! Would take a point tonight.
Saint_clark Posted 9 October, 2009 Posted 9 October, 2009 papa wont fancy it if its raining! Would take a point tonight. I'm pretty sure they have rain in Florence.
John B Posted 9 October, 2009 Posted 9 October, 2009 I'm pretty sure they have rain in Florence. Yes but is probably warmer there
brett24 Posted 9 October, 2009 Posted 9 October, 2009 can see papa going missing in games like this, especially when the pitches get a bit worse. Think we are a fair weather team, thats why I think a point in the blustery rain would be a good result. I think wotton has to play tonight, he adds a bit if bite.

beatlesaint Posted 9 October, 2009 Posted 9 October, 2009 'Papa going missing in games like this?' Pessimism rules OK. Give the guy a chance. Exactly......the conclusions some people come to, and how they get there, is beyond belief.

Have we seen Papa play in games like 'this' yet? I think Papa has done more in 3 games than Wotton did in a season for us.

JustinR Posted 9 October, 2009 Posted 9 October, 2009 Show me a L1 team that has a better starting line up on paper...apart from Leeds of course.... Southampton? With Murty and Connolly in?
John B Posted 9 October, 2009 Posted 9 October, 2009 Show me a L1 team that has a better starting line up on paper...apart from Leeds of course.... Feeling quite confident after your post a good win on the cards I think
S-Clarke Posted 9 October, 2009 Author Posted 9 October, 2009 Show me a L1 team that has a better starting line up on paper...apart from Leeds of course.... And we still have Connolly and Saganoswki (an international!!) on the bench. It will click soon.....

Glasgow_Saint Posted 9 October, 2009 Posted 9 October, 2009 The team is: Saints: Davis, Harding, Jaidi, Trotman, James, Wotton, Hammond, Schneiderlin, Lallana, N'Diaye, Lambert. Subs: Bialkowski, Thomas, Perry, Mills, Antonio, Saganowski, Connolly 1st 11 looks good and bench now also looks strong. pressume Bialkowski has returned from his loan then? and no Holmes???
Red Alert Posted 9 October, 2009 Posted 9 October, 2009 Cant argue with that. So I wont. Looks a really strong bench. Would be interesting to see how many of those players would get into other L1 sides. Starting to feel this season is coming together now. 3 more points tonight and a nice easy day with Stelling and the boys on a saturday afternoon.
benjii Posted 9 October, 2009 Posted 9 October, 2009 I wonder whether it will be Schneiderlin or Hammond who will get forward more than the other?
Legod Third Coming Posted 9 October, 2009 Posted 9 October, 2009 Why not start with Thomas? The defence was much more solid with him in.
explorer saint Posted 9 October, 2009 Posted 9 October, 2009 No disappointed Connolly not starting and would have Mellis in not even on bench
Tac-tics Posted 9 October, 2009 Posted 9 October, 2009 No disappointed Connolly not starting and would have Mellis in not even on bench International duty
S-Clarke Posted 9 October, 2009 Author Posted 9 October, 2009 No disappointed Connolly not starting and would have Mellis in not even on bench Connolly hasn't played for 2 years, how could he start a game at the moment? And Mellis is on international duty...
